Check Out This "Shockingly Fast" '72 Datsun, It's No Gas Either
Time for a chance of pace...
While bankers loot, politicians lie
and the news media looks the other
way, normal people continue to do
positive, worthwhile things.
The subject of this video while not the
ultimate solution to anything, is an
encouraging sign - and it's fun.
America is not just crooks and the thugs
and lawyers they employ.
It's ingenious, creative, positive people too.
A red hot electric carThis guy is going to ruin everything for the global warming/carbon tax crowd.
Non-polluting cars that are high performance and fun?
Tell me it ain't so Big Al (Gore).
How are we supposed to wallow in "inconvenient truths" if trouble-makers like this mess things up by smoking the car companies with superior home brew engineering?
Remember, the personal computer was the creation of a bunch of unfunded individuals, not the military-industrial complex.

Join a 'Mainah' from Morocco at the Moxie Day 5K Race
Tim Long & his Moxie Day 5K Race t-shirt at the Coliseum, Italy;
Atop the Eiffel Tower in France
The Sahara Desert, Morocco
and with
his wife Carolin at the 2009 Moxie Day 5K Road Race.
Applications for
the 2011 Moxie Day 5K Road Race are now available.
If you sign up for the 2011 Moxie Day 5K Road Race on Saturday, July 9th, then you may meet fellow runner Tim Long. Tim, a Brunswick native currently living in Morocco, considers the run a “must do” event.
Tim
and his wife Carolin return to Maine about every two years. In 2009,
they decided to participate in the Moxie Day 5K Race.
Tim wrote in a recent e-mail: “Unlike
other races we have been in, there was no jockeying for a better start
position, no anxious anticipation of the starting gun; instead there was
casual conversation, joking and laughing, pats on the back, and a
general feeling of collective fun.
To
make a long story short, we ran and we finished; not knowing or really
caring about our time or place in the race. While driving back to
Brunswick, I recall thinking how this day marked a moment of great
enjoyment and humble pride in the warmth and simplicity of life in
Maine.
A
short time after returning to Ecuador (where we have been living for
the past ten years), I found myself wearing my Moxie shirt often,
feeling even more prideful of my Maine heritage and our iconic
beverage. I even brought back a few bottles of the good stuff to share
with friends, trying to convince them that while Moxie may be a peculiar
drink and an acquired taste, it is more than that.
There
is a certain intangible quality to Moxie; inside each bottle of
bitter-sweet elixir are years of tradition, countless stories, and
myriad moments that represent the essence of Maine. This is when I
began my own Moxie tradition: my shirt would accompany me, like a bright
orange security blanket, on some of my most exciting travel
adventures.
|
See you at the starting line!”
The
Lisbon Recreation Department and the Moxie Festival Committee are
pleased to announce that the application for the 2011 Moxie Day 5K Road
Race (3.1 mile) on Saturday, July 9th is now available. Last year’s Moxie 5K Race attracted over 480 runners from throughout New England.
The
16th Annual Moxie Day 5K Road Race begins at 7:30 am rain or shine. It
is an early and quick scenic run through the outskirts of Lisbon Falls.
The route includes two steep upgrades, one at the start and the second
at the two mile mark. The Moxie 5K Race begins and ends near Lisbon
High School. The $15 preregistration and $20 day of race fee includes a
free Moxie 5K Race t-shirt.
Prizes
will be awarded to the first male and female finishers. Awards will
also be given to the first and second place male and female finishers in
the following age categories: 12 and under, 13 - 16, 17 - 19, 20 - 29,
30 - 39, 40 - 49, 50 - 59, 60 - 69, 70 and over. Additional awards will
be given to the first male and female “Lisbon Resident” finishers!
There is also a Kids Pre-Race Fun Run starting at 7 am where kids of all ages race and everyone receives a prize.
Since
1983, The Moxie Festival in Lisbon, Maine has been held on the second
weekend in July. The 2011 Moxie Festival weekend is July 8-10, 2011.
The Festival now includes a three day Pow Wow; Friday night fireworks; a
Saturday parade, Festival, and 5K race, and on Sunday, the Chief
Worumbo Androscoggin River Race. Moxie was designated Maine’s official
soft drink on May 20, 2005.
According
to Lisbon Public Safety Officials, an estimated 40,000 people attend
the three-day Moxie Festival. The Town of Lisbon has approximately
9,300 residents.

Good Ole Boys and American pie
5,000 Residents of 'Dying City' Lip Dub Song About Day the Music Died
by Caryn Ganz
In January, MainStreet.com named Grand Rapids, Michigan, 10th on its list of America's "dying cities." It's possible nobody would have ever learned about this dubious distinction, but Newsweek picked up the story on its website, giving folks living in the Midwestern city -- and nearby Detroit and Flint -- something to be bummed about in addition to massive unemployment and home foreclosures.
To prove they're still thriving and have the same taste in classic rock as Madonna, 5,000 residents of Grand Rapids turned to the power of music and motivated to break the world record for largest lip dub on May 22nd, lip synching to Don McLean's sombre "American Pie."
"We disagreed strongly [with the article] and wanted to create a video that encompasses the passion and energy we all feel is growing exponentially in this great city," the clip's director and executive producer Rob Bliss wrote in a statement posted on YouTube (via Buzzfeed). "We felt Don McLean's 'American Pie,' a song about death, was in the end, triumphant and filled to the brim with life and hope." McLean's 1971 track is indeed morbid -- it chronicles the tragic 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper (known as "The Day the Music Died") and makes references to the deadly 1969 Altamont free concert where a Hells Angel stabbed a Rolling Stones fan. "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" it's not, but it is good for a vigorous dorm-room sing-along.
Bliss wrote that the nearly nine-minute video is the longest and largest of its type -- take that Today show and Emerson College! -- cost $40,000 provided by local sponsors, and involved a near total shutdown of the city's downtown. The one-take, one-camera video set to an acoustic version of the song is indeed a huge survey of the city's landscape, featuring four fire trucks, a wedding, a marching band, kayaks, and about a million amateur acoustic guitar players (that's a rough estimate, but if the car manufacturing business in Michigan is slumping, the cheap acoustic guitar trade is thriving).

Maine Pilot participates in the third National Day of Prayer PrayerFlight
Jerry Douglass, owner of Brunswick business, The Modular Advantage, piloted his private plane over Maine’s capital City of Augusta, last week in the third annual “50 Capitals” PrayerFlight. On board and praying for our Capital City and the State of Maine were Pastor Steve DeGroft & Associate Pastor Jonathan Jones of Lisbon Falls Baptist Church, Richard Garrett, Lisbon Falls resident, and Bethany Douglass of Temple.
The "50 Capitals" PrayerFlight was first organized and flown in 2008 when approximately 75 pilots from every state in the nation made history through a coordinated effort to pray over every capital city in the United States from private aircraft in observance of the annual National Day of Prayer.

Rare Bird Sighting Update!
As
recently reported on The Lisbon Reporter, a flock of flamingos was
spotted
reversing their normal migration pattern
and heading north for more temperate weather conditions. This flock was recently spotted wading
along the banks of the Piscataquis River in Kittery, confirming the
projected arrival the evening of April 5th. If you are interested in
donating a $10.00 delivery fee to make sure these flamingos
find a safe habitat for that evening, call Kristy Sheehan for
more information at 577-5398.

Spring Has Sprung In Lisbon
Story and photos submitted by: Todd Comber
While Driving around the other day dodging potholes
and admiring the freedom of a warm spring day, we watched a few horses
as they also enjoyed it by grazing.
With a 'keen eye' one might notice buckets sitting next to trees along side the roadway, if ya dare take your eyes off the road..
That's a sure sign winter has passed and the spring and maple "syrup l" season are here. When I was a kid growing up North of Lisbon, Sap ran so much some people even 'tapped' the telephone poles that held the wires up that spanned the Moose River.

But to find some young residents in the actual process of running their own maple syrup processor,
now that is priceless.
