Lisbon Library Continues to Provide Value During Tough Economic Times

With economic and unemployment woes all around us, our local library continues to be a bargain worth taking advantage of. With services ranging from Toddler and Preschool Storytime to current best-sellers, large print, and audio books, as well as convenient hours, the library can meet the needs of most residents, and for a reasonable fee the library also encourages non-resident membership.

A convenient service that was added this last year is the Online Patron Access Catalog. This not only allows you to search or browse the library database, you can also see if the material is available, whether it is printed material or another type of media, read details, and in some cases reviews. One of the best features of this software is a virtual “book bag” where you can store interesting books and other titles. No more jotting titles on scraps of paper only to lose them on the way to the library, just retrieve your information on a computer terminal at the library! With a free online account login, patrons may also reserve and renew materials from the convenience of their home.

Audio books become increasing popular and a convenient way to take a “book’ with you anywhere you go. And for people on the go who find it's getting more difficult to find the time to read all the books they have on their reading list, listening to an audio book instead of the radio during a drive to school or work can be a great way to multi-task. Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library, a service soon to be available will be audio books downloadable to your MP3 player through a personal computer.

At a time when many find the need to discontinue their personal wireless connections, the Lisbon Library provides wireless internet connection at no charge, as well as computer terminals for public use, whether for employment searches or entertainment. They also have copy services available for a small fee, and as always can provide assistance whether you’re doing research or just have a question that needs an answer, including Maine history or where to find genealogy information. The Library also offer many popular magazine titles. (Another way you can help your local library is to take advantage of magazine gift subscriptions as you are renew your own!)

Children’s Programming continues to be extremely popular, and has returned to both Wednesday & Thursday mornings, despite facing cuts during last year’s budget cycle. Toddler Time occurs promptly from 10:00-10:25 a.m., and is a language enrichment and literacy program designed to be developmentally appropriate for that age group. Come with your toddler and enter the world of songs, rhymes, clapping hands and smiling faces! Preschool Storytime is held for ages 3-5 at 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Room. Stories, songs, nursery rhymes, and crafts are enjoyed each week, helping preschoolers to develop language and pre-reading skills.
Supervision will be provided so siblings ages 3-5 can enjoy the books and toys of the Children's Room during Toddler Time, while they wait for Storytime to begin.
The Lisbon Library also has a Day Care Book Bag program created for daycare providers in the Lisbon area. Each bag contains a random assortment of up to 20 children’s books. Simply come to the Lisbon Library Children’s Room and request a Day Care bag. They will record your name, the date, and give you a numbered bag. You can keep the bag as long as you’d like. When you’ve read all the books, return the book bag and check another out.

The Friends of the Library is a non-profit corporation affiliated with the Lisbon Library for the purpose of supporting library programs and services. Over the years, the Friends efforts have resulted in providing special children's events, up to date reference books, computers, furniture, the annual perpetual memorials. The largest project culminated in the new children's room and program area. Fundraising efforts are ongoing throughout the year, and they welcome used books for the annual book sale. Meetings are held monthly, please check with a librarian for more information. Also, consider a tax deductible gift to the Friends of the Lisbon Library. One hundred percent of your gift stays local to support the Lisbon Library.

The Library is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 am -5 pm, Tuesday from 9 am - 7 pm, and Saturday from 9 am - 2 pm. There is also a drop box located at the front of the building for after-hour returns, and the library staff encourage you to call anytime during their business hours to renew or reserve books.

Food for Fines Program Update

Carol Day and Jim Duley of the LACO Food Bank shown at the Lisbon Library with the Food for Fines donations

The Lisbon Library Department is happy to announce that library patrons have donated 162 pounds of food to the Food for Fines Program! Because the program has been so successful, the library will extend the program through the month of December.

As a reminder, the Lisbon Library Department will waive $2 of your overdue fines for every non-perishable food or household item you donate to our food drive in support of the LACO (Lisbon Area Christian Outreach) Food Bank. Food bank representatives Carol Day and Jim Duley indicate that baby food and formula are in particularly short supply but all non-perishable food or household items are happily welcome.

If you don't have any outstanding fines, you can still donate food or household items until December 31!

We cannot accept expired, damaged or perishable food items.

For additional information, please contact the Lisbon Library Dept at 353-6564.
