Proudly presenting The Honorable William O'Brien
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives,
State of New Hampshire

William L. O’Brien served as Speaker of the House of Representatives of New Hampshire from 2010 to 2012.  Leading the fourth-largest English-speaking legislative body in the world, O’Brien waged battles that few in positions of leadership are willing to do.  He presided over the passage of a budget 11 percent smaller than the prior budget, reducing overall spending by more than $1.2 billion.  In addition, the House with O’Brien at the helm passed a state budget that included no new or increased taxes or fees, reversed the past two terms budgets’ accounting gimmicks, and used responsible revenue estimates.

O’Brien’s stewardship of the House also resulted in the state returning $1 million in ObamaCare funds to Washington with instructions to use the money for debt reduction, and the passage of a bill blocking New Hampshire from implementing ObamaCare exchanges.

As Speaker, O’Brien ushered in reforms to help the economy grow unfettered by burdensome government interference.  During his speakership the House helped job creators by cutting taxes, fees, and surcharges, by creating tax credits and exemptions, and by relaxing unnecessary or duplicative compliance and reporting requirements.

O’Brien also repealed the state’s “card check” law, and passed a law to eliminate the “evergreen” requirement that all communities continue public employee contracts after they expired.  Additionally, he answered the demand for greater government transparency and accountability by passing legislation to make public records, such as the state checkbook, easily obtainable by posting them on state websites.

O'Brien obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from Suffolk University Law School and later received a Masters of Intellectual Property law degree from the University of New Hampshire School of Law.  He resides in Mount Vernon, New Hampshire with his wife of 40 years.

MHPC: You won't believe this‏

September 12, 2013

Dear Fellow Conservative:

You won't believe this.

Liberal Democrats in Augusta are finally paying attention to The Maine Heritage Policy Center's pioneering analysis of Maine’s “Demographic Winter."

Just this week, the Democrat Speaker of the House convened a roundtable discussion, including lawmakers, health care professionals and business leaders from across the state. The theme? Demographic Winter!

For more than three years, MHPC’s research on Maine’s aging population has shed light on our most serious economic crisis. Unfortunately, the liberal Democrats who now recognize the problem only see one solution: more taxes, more spending, and more government.

Absent from the conversation is an understanding of why young people leave Maine and why young people don’t come to Maine.

Our children are not leaving the state because we don’t spend enough money on trumped up jobs programs at the Department of Labor. They’re not leaving because our teachers and professors aren’t paid enough. And they’re definitely not leaving because we don’t have government-run health care or more welfare.

Young people are leaving Maine because there are not enough good and rewarding jobs.

As conservatives, we understand that creating opportunities for young people to have fulfilling careers in Maine begins with shrinking the tax burden, repealing oppressive Nanny State regulations, and ensuring that government intervention in the economy is limited. We at MHPC need the support of generous individuals like you to spread this message of economic freedom.

Only by pushing back against Big Government progressives can we ensure that Maine will be a happy and prosperous place for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren to live.

With MHPC’s bold FreeME initiative, Maine finally has a concrete and realistic plan to get rid of the income tax – a plan that just might thaw our Demographic Winter. By eliminating the income tax county by county, starting with the most distressed areas of the state, Maine can unleash the power of the free market and bring about an economic renaissance.

Your donation of any amount will help us spread the message – from Calais to Fryeburg, from Kittery to Fort Kent – that economic freedom can work for Maine.

In Liberty,
J. Scott Moody
Chief Executive Officer

Unmasker4Maine: Charter Schools: Charlotte Iserbyt v. Bruce Poliquin‏

Maine’s budding charter schools survive legislature by Bruce Poliquin.
“Knowledge is power. The best education for the child is crucial for a lifetime of happiness, success, and health. Education should be about the kids, not the adults. Let’s keep moving down the path of more learning approaches and environments for Maine students. The new and growing charter school option is a step in the right direction.”  Read more, click here.

Charlotte Iserbyt responds:
“Another moron to add to the list.  These people couldn’t add 2-2 if required.  They would surely answer “3″.  How does one get through to them that charters schools, with their unelected boards, are THE vehicle to get the USA moving into the Soviet unelected council form of government.  “They” just don’t seem to have a problem with “taxation without representation”.  They probably never studied the origins of the  the United States of America, and haven’t the faintest idea why the patriots, including George Washington, decided to go to war against Great Britain.
Also,  does he know what school-to-work is?  Has he ever been to Cuba or China or Russia.  Does he know what a quota system is.  Maybe someone should give him this quote from Professor Eugene Boyce, University of Georgia, on communist education.  “They do not educate for jobs that don’t exist.”
That’s really great, Mr. Poliquin…and you say our children are going to have such upward mobility, blah, blah, blah?”

Former Senior Policy Advisor
U.S. Department of Education

MHPC: Friedman Legacy Day 2013‏

The Maine Heritage Policy Center
Joins Global Effort Celebrating Late Nobel Laureate

PORTLAND – Milton Friedman, a Nobel-recognized economist and advisor to several U.S. presidents, will be the focal point for numerous events in all 50 states and throughout the world on July 31. The Maine Heritage Policy Center is participating in the annual “Friedman Legacy Day” to showcase the late professor’s famous policies, including tax reform and school choice.

"The Maine Heritage Policy Center is dedicated to furthering school choice for all children, an educational model that lies at the heart of Dr. Friedman's biggest dreams,” said Amanda R. Clark, Education Policy Analyst for The Maine Heritage Policy Center.

“We are thrilled to be hosting this year's Friedman Legacy Day at one of Maine's five new charter schools. The goal of this event is to increase public awareness of charter schools and their inner workings, to promote school choice as a proven approach to improving student outcomes, and to highlight the close relationship between school choice and economic freedom."

Considered by many to be the most influential economist of the 20th century, Milton Friedman won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1976 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988. The author of such books as “Capitalism and Freedom” and “A Monetary History of the United States,” Dr. Friedman is also well known for his appearance on the popular PBS series “Free to Choose.”

“Milton Friedman’s positive impact on America and the world is still being felt today,” said Robert Enlow, president and CEO of the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice. “The drive toward greater individual freedom and warranted skepticism about big government can be attributed to Dr. Friedman. And it’s groups like The Maine Heritage Policy Center that keep Milton Friedman’s legacy alive.”

In 1996, Dr. Friedman and his wife, Rose, founded the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice to research and promote school choice, an idea he first proposed in 1955.

Maine’s 2013 Friedman Legacy Day is proudly co-sponsored by The Maine Heritage Policy Center, Americans for Prosperity – Maine, and the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice.
