Dear Editor,
In a recent post, I read an article regarding turning down the heat. I can't agree more. Maybe the town should consider appointing an individual who specializes in energy conservation. There is much the town can do to conserve energy and fuel costs. Programmable set back thermostats, locking thermostat covers, preset non-adjustable thermostats are all quick ways to save a fair amount of fuel. This can also work in air conditioning situations. Some firms are pre-cooling buildings during night time when there is no one present and no doors constantly opening. It is much more efficient to pre-cool and maintain temperature this way. Just some food for thought.
I was told that in April, the E.T. Smith Lisbon Village Fire Department turned off the boiler and switched the hot water over to an electric hot water tank. In addition, a discussion in the fire officer's meeting resulted in a general order put out by the fire chief and deputy fire chiefs stating that there will be no unnecessary driving around with the fire trucks. Also, on fire scenes, if the apparatus is not in use, it will be shut off in an effort to conserve fuel. I've actually seen them doing so at the last couple of fires. Maybe more local government departments should think the same way. Actually, I would like to challenge the police department and public works department to follow suit. My hats off to the fire department for taking the initiative to enact such a policy. In fact, it seems that most of the programs the fire department chiefs have put into effect have been with the taxpayer's best interests in mind. Again, kudos to them for their efforts.
