General Assistance Information

General Assistance is a program which is mandated by the State to provide immediate help to eligible people for basic necessities. A municipality may provide emergency assistance when an emergency has been determined. Although the client may be ineligible to receive regular general assistance, persons who apply for assistance to alleviate an emergency may be granted emergency assistance, if they do not have sufficient income to halt the emergency and have not had sufficient income to avert the emergency.

Applicants are responsible for monitoring their fuel and requesting assistance before they run out of fuel. Please DO NOT wait until you are out of oil or running out of oil that day to apply for assistance. Also, you must not have an automatic delivery in order to receive General Assistance. The General Assistance office must order the fuel with a purchase order.

The applicant has the responsibility at the time of each application to provide accurate, complete and current household information and documentation concerning:

· Income
· Resources
· Assets
· Employment
· Use of income

The General Assistance office is here to assist you with your energy needs; we do not want our residents to be cold this winter. We want to emphasize that this program is confidential. Please call us at 353-3000 ext.124 if you can not afford to purchase your fuel or pay your electric bill. If you are not eligible for General Assistance, we will work with you to find other resources to assist you.
