Town to reissue property tax bills

LITCHFIELD — The town will send out 2,763 new property tax bills to replace those mailed about two weeks ago.
Selectmen authorized the new bills Tuesday after more than 130 people registered concerns that their bills had increased significantly even though property values and tax rates remained unchanged.
"We recognize that something was wrong, and we want very much to correct it," Selectwoman Rayna Leibowitz said.
Selectmen met Tuesday night in front of about 90 people to offer an explanation and authorize the recalculations. The special selectmen's meeting attracted a full house, and some people stood outside open doors to listen and participate in the proceedings.
