MHPC Makes Cash Welfare Spending Available Online

The Maine Heritage Policy Center publishes the most comprehensive view of Maine's cash welfare program ever presented to the public.

 

 

PORTLAND, Maine - The Maine Heritage Policy Center, Maine's foremost free market think tank, on Thursday presented to the people of Maine an exclusive look at data related to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) cash welfare program. The data, which is available at TheMaineWire.com, represents the most comprehensive view of Maine's cash welfare program ever presented to the public.

 

"For the first time, the people of Maine can see how their tax dollars are being spent on Maine's cash welfare program," said MHPC CEO J. Scott Moody. "It is our hope that this data will provide a solid, factual foundation for current policy debates over welfare reform. Based on this data, it is no longer possible for reasonable people to conclude that welfare abuse does not exist. The data shows that Maine’s cash welfare has been accessed in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It shows cash welfare has been accessed at liquor stores, bars, cigarette shops, strip clubs and amusement parks."

 

"This blatant abuse of Maine's TANF program is not compatible with its goal of encouraging benefit recipients to become healthy and productive members of the community," he said. "The people of Maine should demand responsible welfare reform that not only respects Maine taxpayers, but also ensures the TANF program is achieving its goals."

Liberal Democrats in Augusta are finally paying attention to The Maine Heritage Policy Center's pioneering analysis of Maine’s “Demographic Winter."

 

Just this week, the Democrat Speaker of the House convened a roundtable discussion, including lawmakers, health care professionals and business leaders from across the state. The theme? Demographic Winter!

 

For more than three years, MHPC’s research on Maine’s aging population has shed light on our most serious economic crisis. Unfortunately, the liberal Democrats who now recognize the problem only see one solution: more taxes, more spending, and more government.

 

Absent from the conversation is an understanding of why young people leave Maine and why young people don’t come to Maine.

 

Our children are not leaving the state because we don’t spend enough money on trumped up jobs programs at the Department of Labor. They’re not leaving because our teachers and professors aren’t paid enough. And they’re definitely not leaving because we don’t have government-run health care or more welfare.

 

Young people are leaving Maine because there are not enough good and rewarding jobs.

 

As conservatives, we understand that creating opportunities for young people to have fulfilling careers in Maine begins with shrinking the tax burden, repealing oppressive Nanny State regulations, and ensuring that government intervention in the economy is limited. We at MHPC need the support of generous individuals like you to spread this message of economic freedom.

 

Only by pushing back against Big Government progressives can we ensure that Maine will be a happy and prosperous place for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren to live.

“Another moron to add to the list.  These people couldn’t add 2-2 if required.  They would surely answer “3″.  How does one get through to them that charters schools, with their unelected boards, are THE vehicle to get the USA moving into the Soviet unelected council form of government.  “They” just don’t seem to have a problem with “taxation without representation”.  They probably never studied the origins of the  the United States of America, and haven’t the faintest idea why the patriots, including George Washington, decided to go to war against Great Britain.

Also,  does he know what school-to-work is?  Has he ever been to Cuba or China or Russia.  Does he know what a quota system is.  Maybe someone should give him this quote from Professor Eugene Boyce, University of Georgia, on communist education.  “They do not educate for jobs that don’t exist.”

That’s really great, Mr. Poliquin…and you say our children are going to have such upward mobility, blah, blah, blah?”
