I have some good news... State Senator Eric Brakey (R-Androscoggin) has introduced Constitutional Carry again this year! Constitutional Carry means if you can legally possess a gun for self-defense, then you can carry it without having to first beg for government permission. It was recently signed into law in Alaska, Arizona, and Wyoming. And just a few miles away in Vermont, it's ALWAYS been the concealed carry standard. As you may recall, this bill was introduced in Maine last year. Unfortunately, Republican Senator Amy Volk (Cumberland) killed it.  Senator Volk was the deciding vote against Constitutional Carry in the House (where she served in the 126th legislature), where the bill narrowly failed by a vote of 74-73. Evidently, some in the Maine Legislature think your Second Amendment rights are less valid than those of Vermonters. Fortunately, Senator Brakey has re-introduced the bill again! This year it's LR-280, and it needs your help. With the assault on your right to keep and bear arms moving forward in Washington, passing this piece of legislation is more important than ever. LR-280 by Senator Eric Brakey would: *** Remove the prohibition on concealing a dangerous weapon so that law-abiding citizens of Maine may carry their firearm concealed for self-defense without having to first obtain government permission; *** Remove the prohibition on having a loaded pistol or revolver in a motor vehicle, and; *** Leave Maine's Concealed Carry Permit system intact for those who choose to get the optional permit -- for reciprocity reasons or other reasons. I have to tell you, this is the kind of thing that makes me proud to be an American. Working in politics, not a day goes by that I don’t see some politician assaulting the freedoms of hard-working Americans. It’s a refreshing change to see a lawmaker like Eric Brakey fight to advance and protect your gun rights. Unfortunately, without your help, Constitutional Carry will be at the mercy of anti-gunners who would love nothing more than to kill it. Insiders have warned me that radical left-wing lawmakers -- and even some Republicans -- do not want to see ANY pro-gun bill pass the legislature this year. In fact, they may even move forward with anti-gun legislation instead. But sometimes the best defense is a strong offense. As a Maine resident and patriot, your lawmakers need to hear from you! That's why I need your help! Here's what you can do right now: Call YOUR State Representative at 207-287-1400 and your State Senator at 207-287-1540. Click here to look up who represents you. Voice your support for LR-280, Constitutional Carry.  Urge them to sign on as a bill cosponsor, and insist they oppose all anti-gun proposals this legislative session. There’s no time to lose.  The deadline to sign on as a bill cosponsor is this Thursday, February 12, 2015.
