Fannie Taps Treasury for $15.3 Billion More After a 10th Loss Share Business
By Dawn Kopecki Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) --
Fannie Mae will seek $15.3 billion in U.S. aid, bringing the total owed under a government lifeline to $76.2 billion, after its 10th consecutive quarterly loss.
The mortgage-finance company posted a fourth-quarter net loss of $16.3 billion, or $2.87 a share, Washington-based Fannie Mae said in a filing yesterday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Fannie Mae, which owns or guarantees about 28 percent of the $11.8 trillion U.S. home-loan market, has been hobbled by a three-year housing slump that wiped 28 percent from home values nationwide and led to record foreclosures. The company, which posted $120.5 billion in losses over the previous nine quarters, and rival Freddie Mac were seized by regulators in September 2008.
“Our financial results for 2009 reflected the continued adverse impact of the weak economy and housing market, which has resulted in record mortgage delinquencies and contributed to our recording significant credit-related expenses and net losses during each quarter of the year,” Fannie Mae said in the filing. For the full year, Fannie Mae’s loss widened to $74.4 billion from $59.8 billion in 2008.

Excerpts from the August 2009 article.
Mortgage financer Fannie Mae has requested for $10.7 billion aid from the Treasury to stay afloat after posting a loss of $14.8 billion for the second-quarter.
This is the third time when Washington-based Fannie Mae has approached the Treasury for financial assistance.
The company had posted a loss of $2.3 billion for the same quarter in the previous year. But the loss is down from $23.2 billion loss in the previous quarter.
Credit losses from the housing crisis are still to blame for the company's dismal results.
The value of non-performing loans on company's books soared to $171 billion in June, as compared to $144.9 billion in March.
However, the company reduced its provisions for the credit losses to $18.2 billion from $20.9 billion.
It may be noted here that Freddie Mac is the government-sponsored sibling of Fannie Mae.
The Obama administration is expected to unveil its plans for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac early next year. Alternatives being thought include keeping the company private, merging them into a federal agency or detaching their bad mortgage assets into a new company.
The US government has pledged up to $400 billion in aid for the two companies as both the companies play a crucial role in the mortgage market.

Another fine example of the Washington D.C Leadership.

Did You Know This About Your Cell Phone?

Tapping your cell phone

Bob Segall/13 Investigates
Imagine someone watching your every move, hearing everything you say and knowing where you are at every moment. If you have a cell phone, it could happen to you. 13 Investigates explains how your cell phone can be secretly hijacked and used against you - and how to protect yourself.
After four months of harassing phone calls, Courtney Kuykendall was afraid to answer her cell phone.

The Tacoma, Washington, teenager was receiving graphic, violent threats at all hours.

And when she and her family changed their cell phone numbers and got new phones, the calls continued.

Using deep scratchy voices, anonymous stalkers literally took control of the Kuykendall's cell phones, repeatedly threatened Courtney with murder and rape, and began following the family's every move.

"They're listening to us and recording us," Courtney's mother, Heather Kuykendall, told NBC's Today Show. "We know that because they will record us and play it back as a voicemail."
How is something like this possible?

Just take a look on the internet. That's where you'll find the latest spy technology for cell phones.

Moosehead Cedar Log Homes      24 February 2010

On Tuesday February 23rd at approximately 1:45pm a fire occurred at the production facility of Moosehead Cedar Log Homes located on Log Home Road in Greenville Maine.

First and foremost there were no injuries.

The fire destroyed approximately 50% of the main manufacturing building. The State of Maine Fire Marshals office is currently investigating the cause of the fire.

The building and its contents were insured and it is the intent of the owners, Randall and Lucy Comber, to begin rebuilding immediately after the State Fire Marshal’s office concludes its investigation.

Moosehead Cedar Log Homes will continue to remain open. As of today production facility employees were preparing a log home package for delivery to New York. Moosehead Cedar Log Homes’ customers will not notice any interruption in their service. In the true spirit of Maine cooperation another log home company has offered its facilities and employees to assist Moosehead Cedar Log Homes in preparing home packages while they rebuild.

Phising Scam Hits Maine House of Representatives Member

Dear Lisbon Readers,
As you will read below, I've been "phished" and it has not been pleasant!  I hope to help others avoid this scamming of our emails.
    Best regards,
Rep Joan Welsh

Rep. Welsh alerts computer users of phishing scheme
Local legislator victim in email scam, sends swift warning to constituents

AUGUSTA – State Rep. Joan Welsh, D-Rockport, warned midcoast area residents to be on guard against email scams.  Welsh sent out an email today to hundreds of area residents about the email fraud that she became entangled in recently.

Welsh had her email account hijacked after responding to what she thought was a legitimate request for information from her account provider.  Scam artists then accessed Welsh’s account and sent out emails to people in her contact file.  The email stated that Welsh was in England and needed money to get home after losing all her money and credit cards.  Welsh received dozens of phone calls and emails from local residents concerned about the scam.  This type of scam, which is designed to trick recipients into releasing personal account information, is referred to as a “phishing” scheme.

“I am not in England at a seminar,” said Welsh.  “I am here in Rockport struggling with the fact that my email account has been hijacked and false emails have been sent to everyone in my contact file.”

Welsh contacted her provider and sought advice from the Information Services office at the Maine Legislature.  By utilizing an electronic email newsletter, which she uses to communicate with constituents about upcoming legislation and other issues, she notified individuals of the fraud. She advised persons not to respond to the email and to delete it from their inbox.

Welsh stated that she learned a lot today from her Internet provider and others who had previous experiences with email fraud.

“I learned that Internet providers, and legitimate financial institutions, will never ask you to reveal any passwords or other personal information via email,” said Welsh.  “I also learned to be suspicious of any emails from someone asking for money, even if this person is a friend.”

Welsh also stated that she was advised not to open, respond or forward the suspicious emails to someone else.  If someone’s account has been hijacked, you may not be responding to a friend or colleague at all, but instead communicating directly with a thief trying to defraud you.

Welsh noted that other tips to avoid email fraud include:

  • Never respond to any questionable email messages, click on links in these messages, or call phone numbers listed in the message. You should check the information by opening a new Internet browser window and type in the company's correct Web site information yourself.

  • If you believe your email or Internet security has been compromised, contact your Internet provider, your network administrator and immediately change your passwords on your accounts.

  • Look closely at any questionable emails for typos, grammatical errors, or unusual punctuation and capitalization. Many identity theft emails are coming from outside of the U.S, so their grasp of English may not be perfect.

  • Do not feel pressured to respond to unsolicited emails. Resist any suggestion to "act immediately" despite the urge to do so in the email. Once you turn over any personal information, you risk identify theft or other violations of your privacy.

  • If you receive an email that you believe to be a phishing scam, the Federal Trade Commission has set up an email address to forward the email: spam@uce.gov.  If you think that you have been a victim of phishing or if your identity may have been compromised, you can file a complaint at the FTC’s website at www.ftc.gov.
Welsh also noted that through this experience she now understands the reason to use different passwords for various online accounts.
“Apparently once these thieves have your password for one account, they may try to use your name and password on other Web sites such as Paypal,” said Welsh.
Welsh stated that she hopes others can learn from her experience.
“My advice is to be watchful for these kinds of scams, as they are all too real and all too dangerous,” said Welsh.
Below is the email that was sent by hackers from Welsh’s email account.

Hello,

How are you doing? Hope all is well with you and family, I know this might be a surprise to you but I am sorry I didn't inform you about my traveling to England for a Seminar.

I need a favor from you because I misplaced my wallet on my way to the hotel, my money and other valuables are gone including my credit cards. I will like you to assist me with an urgent loan of 2300 british pounds which is about $3800 U.S dollars to sort-out my hotel bills and get myself back home. This is one favor I will always show gratitude throughout my lifetime.

I will appreciate whatever you can afford to help me with and I promise to refund the money as soon as I return home. Please do this for me and I will be grateful.

"Secret AIG Document Shows Goldman Sachs Minted Most Toxic CDOs

By Richard Teitelbaum
Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) -- When a congressional panel convened a hearing on the government rescue of American International Group Inc. in January, the public scolding of Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner got the most attention.
Lawmakers said the former head of the New York Federal Reserve Bank had presided over a backdoor bailout of Wall Street firms and a coverup. Geithner countered that he had acted properly to avert the collapse of the financial system.
A potentially more important development slipped by with less notice, Bloomberg Markets reports in its April issue. Representative Darrell Issa, the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, placed into the hearing record a five-page document itemizing the mortgage securities on which banks such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Societe Generale SA had bought $62.1 billion in credit-default swaps from AIG."

"Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue"

The USS North Carolina, USS Washington and USS West Virginia began firing 16 inch guns at a small island in the Pacific Ocean. That was on February 19, 1945 and it was the beginning of the Battle of Iwo Jima. On February 23, 1945, Joe Rosenthal snapped the famous photograph "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima."

That was 65 years ago today. Six men climbed Mount Suribachi to raise Old Glory; five were United States Marines and John Bradley was a Navy Corpsman.
Here are the men that lifted the American Flag on Mount Suribachi:

Psalm 109:8

We were in slow-moving traffic the other day and the car in front of us had an Obama bumper sticker on it..

It read: "Pray for Obama.  Psalm 109:8".

My husband's Bible was lying on the dash board & he got it & opened it up to the scripture & read it.

He started laughing & laughing.  Then he read it to me.  I couldn't believe what it said.  I had a good laugh, too.

Psalm 109:8
"May his days be few; may another take his place of office. "

At last - I can voice a Biblical prayer for our president!  Look it up, it is word for word!  Let us all bow our heads and pray.

It Is No Wonder We Are Broke

It's no wonder we're broke! We are giving tons of money to everyone EXCEPT our own people. We could afford to pay for the health-care issues, medicare issues, social security issues AND feed the hungry for just part of what we are giving to our enemies.
And these people DO NOT like us, why are we supporting them.

Bureau of Insurance Warns Consumers about Insurance Scams

Bureau of Insurance Warns Consumers about Insurance Scams
Bureau of Insurance Superintendent Mila Kofman is warning consumers in Maine about an entity called “American Trade Association.”

American Trade Association, which may be operating under “Serve America Assurance, Ltd” or other names, is not licensed in Maine and is not selling coverage through a licensed insurance company. Superintendent Kofman said unlicensed insurance sales often involve insolvent, dishonest or non-existent insurers. Consumers who have paid premiums to such entities may end up being responsible for paying their own medical bills as well – even though they spent money on premiums thought they were covered.

“When times are tough, criminals try to take advantage of consumers by selling cheap ‘insurance,’” said Kofman. “If it seems too good to be true, it usually is. In most cases like this, there is no insurance, and people who have been paying premiums end up paying their medical expenses, too.”

In general, Kofman says Mainers should avoid purchasing health insurance from companies that advertise by fax, on the internet, or through other unsolicited offers. If an advertisement offers surprisingly low prices, limited-time offers, and little information about the company itself, it is most likely not real insurance.

Before purchasing insurance, consumers should verify that an insurance company is real. “Check with us before you buy. That’s the only way to make sure you are not being scammed by unscrupulous individuals selling phony coverage,” Kofman added. Also check to make sure the insurance agent is licensed in Maine. Consumers with questions or concerns about their insurance can contact the Bureau’s Consumer Health Care Division by calling 1-800-300-5000 or visiting the Bureau’s Web site, www.maine.gov/insurance.
