***Important*** Rufe's Weather Outlook Update

Weather Update

Alas, not pitch perfect, the storm to track closer to shore resulting in a nasty scenario.

Snow will overspread southernmost Maine mid morning Thursday, press north rapidly and become heavy very quickly. At rates in excess of 1”/hr the heaviest snow will fall around dusk. Thereafter the risk is now very real of mixtures within 30 miles of the coast between 7PM SW, 10PM east, reverting back to snow 4AM west, 7AM east. Up to ½” sleet and up to ¼” ice is likely 10-30 miles inland. Closer to the ocean the overnight blend will consist more of rain and sleet with less than a ¼” gritty mix, if that.  Snow will end by midday Friday.

Amounts will be highly variable. 8”-14” will be the totals, front and back. Please refer to the morning graphic.
The signature for an inversion is strong. However within 5 miles of the coast expect gusts to 40 mph from the north between 8PM SW to 4AM east. Within 20 miles of the coast north/northeast gusts of 30-40 mph during this period.

Weather Update
2/12/14   11AM
Quite a robust and wet storm to impact Maine in 26-50 hours.
Snow will overspread southernmost Maine around 11AM Thursday, pressing north rapidly and become heavy very quickly. At rates in excess of 1”/hr, heaviest snow will fall through dusk. Thereafter snow will yield to sleet 7PM SW, 10PM east, as far north as Fryeburg to Bangor. Up to ½” sleet and up to ¼” ice is likely 10-30 miles inland.

Closer to the ocean rain and sleet will evolve with up to 1/4” gritty mix. Rainfall of one-half to one inch is expected, most across Penobscot Bay. The heaviest precipitation will occur between 7PM and midnight. Marked loading of coniferous tree limbs is expected, especially 10-30 miles inland. Lighter snow will resume 4AM southwest to 7AM in Rockland, ending 11AM southwest, 1PM mountains and Penobscot Bay Friday.

Amounts will be highly variable. 8”-18” will be combined totals, front and back. The heaviest will stretch from Fryeburg to Orono. Please refer to the updated graphic. Temperatures for most will rise above freezing for several hours Friday, assisting in shedding of the saturated snow.

Within 5 miles of the coast expect north gusts to 40 mph between 6PM to midnight. Within 20 miles of the coast north/northeast gusts of 30-39 mph are likely during this period.

Weather Update

The “perfect storm” late Thursday and into the night??

This refers to the alignment of all parameters to generate a robust northeaster throughout the service area without ice or sleet. It appears that odds are strong favoring this scenario. There is less than a 20% risk of any mixing within 15-20 miles of the coast.

Snow will overspread southernmost Maine mid morning Thursday, press north rapidly and become heavy very quickly. At rates in excess of 1”/hr the heaviest snow will fall around dusk. Lighter snow will fall overnight, ending by 5AM Friday. The snow will be dense along the coastal plain, classically drier north and northwest. Expect 6”-12”, most near the coast.

The signature for an inversion is strong. Only within 5 miles of the coast does it appear possible for north/northeast gusts of 30-40 mph during the early nighttime hours.

Rufe's Weather Outlook Update

Powerful storm to impact southern NE: we shall be in the bleachers.
Light snow will overspread the southern border around 6PM reaching the northern fringes of the service area around midnight. The “heaviest” snow will occur around 1AM, departing the coast late tomorrow morning.  The snow will be quite light and combined with a stiff north breeze there should be little in the way of adhesion to coniferous trees.
Expect a dusting far north to 5” in Kittery.
Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island will collect up to one foot, possibly more, with gusts to 40 mph. some issues may arise overnight and into the morning.

Sunday; rain early. Breezy. Lows 26-35 N/S. highs 36-48 N/S.

1/6/14
Flash freeze tonight, stiff winds tomorrow.
Any subfreezing temps in the remote northern valleys will be scoured out in an hour or two. No additional icing will occur on limbs and power lines, only loading if they are still snow laden from prior storms. Pavement however will be slow to warm inland. Expect glazing for a few hours despite temps rising through the 30s.

Periodic rain will end from west to east mid to late afternoon, concluding as snow showers over the mountains. Temps will remain above freezing all day, the thaw persisting. Brisk wind gusts less than 35 mph along the coast east of Casco Bay will slowly ease.

Gusty west winds will spike briefly late today system wide with the frontal passage, yet should remain below 35 mph.

Temps will crash after 4PM, as much as 3 degrees/hour. Expect a hard a flash freeze.

West gusts tomorrow will peak between 10AM and 3PM at 35-40 mph system wide, perhaps strongest within 20 miles of the coast.

Gusts will not exceed 35 mph Wednesday.

Rufe's Weather Outlook Update

A few more hours of snow, several more hours of wind.

We are at the peak of the wind curve: gusts to 40 at the shoreline, gusts to 35 inland to I-95, and lesser velocities to the west. Needless to say white-outs envelope a scene at times with much blowing and drifting of the last 1”-3” of snow, most at the immediate coast.
Northerly gusts will begin to ease southwest after 9AM, northeast by noon. Gusts should diminish below 20 mph region wide at dusk. Wind chill values early this morning will range from 20-35 below zero. Temperatures will remain below zero all day north of Standish, Gray, Liberty and Belfast: a very dangerous environment for all those out in the elements.

Very high tides will occur around noon today. Shorelines south of Scarborough will endure pounding surf and some degree of beach erosion.

Crews may be requested for assistance throughout eastern MA and RI due to much heavier snow and stiffer wind.

The next storm to arrive after dark Sunday, exiting Monday will produce primarily rain through much of the service area. Only the northern and western portions of the service area will collect light accumulations of snow, sleet or freezing rain prior to a major thaw.

Thursday, January 2, 2014

Rufe's Extended Weather Outlook

Multiple elements to this “clean” storm.
Light snow will edge slightly further north during the day, reaching Route 2 by dusk. The snow will fall at a fairly steady rate, perhaps a pulse around midnight. The last inch will fall by 2AM over the northern fringes of the service area, by 10AM along the coast, flurries a few hours thereafter. The snow will be very light and fluffy: expect little adhesion to limbs or power lines. Amounts will range from about 2” in Jackman to 13” across southern most York County.

North-northeast winds will increase this afternoon and into the night, peak gusts between 2AM and 8AM tomorrow. Along the coast sustained 20, gusts 40, inland to I-95 sustained 17, gusts 35 mph, lesser velocities farther west and north. Winds will ease only slightly thereafter shifting to the north, with a more notable relaxing after 3PM. During the early morning tomorrow white-outs are likely with much blowing and drifting across the entire coastal plain. Wind chill values early Friday will range from 20-35 below zero, very dangerous for all those out in the elements.
Very high tides will occur near noon today and tomorrow, midnight tonight. The shore south of Scarboro suffering pounding surf and erosion.
Utility crews may be requested for assistance throughout eastern MA and RI due to much heavier snow and stiffer wind.

Rufe's Weather Outlook Update

Minimal impact for most this afternoon, far north still dealing with additional icing.

The freezing line extends east-west from Lebanon to Saco. It may inch north 10 miles or so this afternoon, then settle a bit after dusk. Along the western Maine border temps may creep a degree or two above freezing after midnight. Showers of freezing rain or mist will dry up south by dusk, not until 11PM far north. Therefore less than 1/10” additional ice will accrete south of Route 2, 1/10”-1/4” north to Jackman to Greeneville, and another 1/4” north of that zone. Winds again not a concern.

The next dose of rain will cross the southern threshold around 5AM tomorrow, advancing across the remainder of the service area by mid morning. Many towns inland will still be near the freezing mark thereafter some glazing is likely, however should not exceed 1/10”. Unlike today temps will slowly rise tomorrow while the rain falls. From Coburn’s Gore to Greenville a light mix of snow/sleet/freezing rain will launch, blending to light snow by early afternoon. This demarcation will settle south after dusk Monday night, ending a snow for all but the coast, a coating to 1”.  A hard freeze will set in Monday night, persisting through at least Christmas.
