Some Words of Caution For All This Independence Day, July 4th, 2015

US officials warn of Islamic State July 4 attacks‏

By

“It will be big. We will hit the kuffar (unbelievers) hard InshAllah.” Not that this has anything to do with Islam, as everyone from Obama to Cameron to Tony Abbott tell us. Can the West survive this refusal to face reality?
“US Officials Warn of ISIS Attacks on July 4,” by Tzvi Ben-Gedalyahu, Jewish Press, June 27, 2015 (thanks to Pamela Geller):
American police forces from coast to coast are on alert from federal officials that the Islamic State (ISIS) is planning to terrorize the country during the July 4 Independence Day holiday.
Read more here.

Editor's note; While we are on this subject those that are planning on shooting off "Fireworks", Please be respectful of our Veterans, Pets, and Wildlife.  For some of Our Veterans, the loud booms are a reminder of the War experiences that have left them scarred with PTSD.  Shooting fireworks off before and after the Holiday is not necessary.  Your home  and  wildlife might be 'unsettled' also.  Just be considerate and have a safe celebration.  Thank You.
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.

A Young Elephant Is Coaxed Back Up Onto His Feet By Its Herd On A Busy Roadway

Two elephants coax a baby to its feet and off busy road. Video screen grab

In a touching display of caring and togetherness, a herd of elephants recently coaxed a baby elephant that had fallen in a busy roadway back to its feet and safely into the wilderness.
The dramatic scene played out recently in Kruger National Park in South Africa, with motorists watching from both directions in the road.

The footage, posted Tuesday to the Kruger Sightings YouTube channel, shows the calf put its head to the pavement, rest on its side, then lie flat against the pavement, drawing several herd members to its side.
Ultimately, though, it was the persistent efforts of a young adult and an older calf that prompted the little one to stand and walk off on its own.
“Absolutely fantastic how the herd protects and help this calf up to join them again,” reads a comment from the park. “Luckily the cars kept their distance.”
It remains unclear why the baby elephant chose to lie down. One of the commenters suggested it was merely tired, and pointed out that it did not “collapse,” as mentioned in the video description.
Another commenter agreed, stating that it looked like the type of tantrum that human babies often throw.
Whatever the case, it looked to be ok as it walked off, and the episode is just another example of how these intelligent pachyderms, which are known for the deep bonds they share with others, will stand up for one another.
In this case they seem to know what all humans are taught: It’s not safe to linger on a road full of cars.

YES on question 1 !‏

Dear Editor:

“As Maine goes, so goes the nation?”  Then, why are we the last state to allow bear trapping and other cruel methods for ‘trophy’ killing (of) bears?  ‘Harvesting’, some call it.  We harvest pumpkins and wheat.  We kill bears.

Hunting is something, entirely, different.  It requires skill, knowledge and pursuit of prey.  There is no hunting in walking up to a restrained bear and executing it at point-blank range.

November’s ballot initiative is a no-brainer.  Please vote YES on Question 1 to protect our bears from these unfair ‘tools’ of baiting, trapping and hounding.  Maine does not allow these cruel methods for deer and moose hunting... why bears?

Get it done; YES on 1 !  Let’s make Maine proud of us, not ashamed!

Thank you.

BDN: Baby Eagles rescued from Bangor nest after mother falls ill, father electrocuted

By John Holyoke, BDN Staff
BANGOR, Maine — On Sunday, area bird watchers were stunned when over a seven-hour period, one adult bald eagle was discovered standing, apparently ill, on a sidewalk, and another, presumably its mate, flew into electric wires and died.
On Monday, a crew methodically assessed the situation, sent a climber up a large white pine tree to the eagle nest some 90 feet above the ground, and rescued two orphaned eaglets, which were immediately fed electrolytes and taken to Avian Haven, a bird rehabilitation facility, in Freedom.
The two eaglets will be reunited with their mother at Avian Haven.

WND EXCLUSIVE Cattle Shot, Buried On Bundy Ranch

Nevada family in dispute with feds posts disturbing images

 Bob Unruh

The Nevada rancher in a fight with the federal government over grazing land his family has been using since the late 1800s is revealing some of the damage he blames on the U.S. government: cattle shot and killed and then dumped into trenches and buried.
The Bureau of Land Management contends Cliven Bundy owes more than $1.2 million in grazing fees, but Bundy insists the federal government is overstepping its authority, charging him to use the same land on which his ancestors grazed cattle a century ago.
The conflict reached a flashpoint when the government moved in armed officers April 5 and started rounding up the family’s cattle with the apparent intention of selling them off and keeping the money.
However, hundreds of individuals the family has described as “patriots” also moved in. Rather than spark a pitched battle, the federal officers retreated after a weeklong standoff, with Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., promising that the battle was not over.
The standoff  has resulted in damaged fences, damaged water troughs and dead cattle, the family charged.
Family members have created a website and a Facebook page where images have been posted.
One of the images was accompanied by a note that said: “Digging up 1 of the HUGE holes where they threw the cows that they had ran to death or shot. I feel that this NEEDS to be put out for the public to see.”

BDN: ‘Survivor’ winner opens ‘glamorous camping’ retreat in lavish Durham yurt

Posted Jan. 29, 2014, at 2:04 p.m.

DURHAM, Maine — On a January day when the temperature barely reached double digits, 63-year-old Bob Crowley pulled the earflaps of his hat tightly to his head before steering his four-wheel Polaris Ranger through the woods of rural Durham to Fisher Ridge Yurt.
It was cold, but the 2008 winner of “Survivor: Gabon” showed no sign of the arctic conditions, except for an ever-reddening nose, as the temperature seemed to continue to drop.
After a five minute drive, Crowley led a group inside his insulated yurt, the heat from the wood stove beckoning, prompting Crowley, his wife, Peggy Crowley, and their guests to shed their coats and gloves.
Circular, portable tent-like yurts have been the traditional homes of nomadic people in Central Asia — particularly Mongolia — for thousands of years. The circular shape makes a yurt resistant to the region’s strong winds, and the structures are easy to erect and dismantle, making them particularly suitable to the roaming lifestyle.

Like a slow-motion train wreck, the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster is still causing damage long after the world’s media has left the news story behind.
On March 11, 2011, the most powerful earthquake ever to hit Japan triggered a tsunami with waves that reached as high as 144 feet. These waves swamped the Fukushima nuclear power-plant complex, causing a resulting shutdown leading to the world’s worst nuclear incident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
The accident has been rated a level 7, on a scale of 1 to 7, on the International Nuclear Event Scale.
As a result of this disaster, the complex’s coolant pumps failed to operate and the power plant reactors overheated, leading to a release of radionuclides directly into the ocean exceeding that from any previous accident.
Water is currently being pumped into the reactors in an attempt to keep them cool and prevent further explosions, but handling the water is becoming a problem.
The contaminated cooling water is being released directly into the ocean and is making its way into the ecosphere. Water from the storage tanks has also seeped into the groundwater and from there, into the ocean. Efforts to use a various barriers to prevent contamination have not completely stopped the leakage.

Chop 'N' Drop: A Collaboration to Improve Stream Habitat for Brook Trout

During the summer of 2013, Maine wildlife and forest groups joined forces to learn how to "chop 'n' drop" in the woods to improve stream habitat. Historically, Maine streams were straightened or cleared by the timber industry to most efficiently transport logs to the mills but, unfortunately, these objectives negatively impacted brook trout habitat.

With log drives a thing of the past, Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Forest Service, Forest Society of Maine, Plum Creek and others are working together to reverse history and put wood back in the water to fast track stream recovery. Learn more and watch the action from the "chop 'n' drop" at Intervale Brook near Greenville, Maine.

Virus in Maine’s Wild Turkey Population

Turkey hunters should be aware of Lymphoproliferative Disease Virus (LPDV), which has been found in Maine turkeys. Read below to find out more about the virus and what to do if you shoot or see a turkey that has LPDV.

What is Lymphoproliferative Disease Virus (LPDV)?
This is a virus that causes minor to extreme lesions on a turkey’s head and legs. It is thought to spread between turkeys by direct skin contact or through mosquito bites. Some turkeys can fend off minor infections and survive while others can develop extreme lesions that inhibit their sight and ability to eat, which ultimately leads to death.

Are there health risks for humans?
The disease poses no risk to human health. However, like all infections, caution is advised while handling a bird with LPDV. There is a potential for secondary bacterial infections if birds are handled improperly. Thoroughly cooking the meat to an internal temperature of a minimum of 165°F is also advised.

What should I do if I shoot a bird that looks like this?
Although wild turkeys cannot pass this virus on to humans, if you shoot a bird that looks like the above pictures and you do not want to eat it, do NOT register it and please contact a Wildlife Biologist at one of the offices listed below or call the Department of Public Safety in Augusta at (800) 452-4664 to be connected with a Game Warden. After examining the bird, the Department staff member will determine your eligibility to harvest another turkey.

Where did it come from?
Little is known about the origin of LPDV in the United States. LPDV was first detected in domestic turkeys in Europe. The first confirmed case in the United Sates was in wild turkeys in Georgia in 2009.   MDIFW confirmed Maine’s first case of LPDV in April 2012. Since that time, we have confirmed several cases throughout the state. Currently, known cases occur virtually wherever wild turkeys are present. We speculate that a combination of a very good turkey production year in 2011 and the mild winter of 2011-2012 may have contributed to the apparent increase in occurrence recently. It is likely to be encountered in 2013 as well.

If you shoot or see a wild turkey with these lesions, please contact the IFW office closest to you:

Crow Report

Well, it is not a pretty story.

Hundreds of dead crows were found along the New England coast and there was concern for Avian Flu.

A Boston College Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and he confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu, to everyone's relief.

However, he determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, and only 2% were killed by cars.

An Ornithological Behaviorist at the College was then asked to determine the disproportionate percentages for truck versus car kill.

The Ornithological Behaviorist determined the cause in short order.

When crows eat road kill, they always post a "look-out Crow" in a nearby tree, to warn of impending danger.

His conclusion was that the lookout crow could say "Cah", but he could not say "Truck."
Now you know the rest of the story & Yes I have been in the house too long.
