Democrat gubernatorial candidate Libby Mitchell has backed out of a candidate's forum sponsored by the Bangor Region Development Alliance, Bangor Metro and Maine Ahead magazines. The forum is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
"Libby Mitchell needs to explain her record on these issues," said Charlie Webster, Chairman of the Maine Republican Party. "She's got a long, sordid record of anti-business activity. Her time as Speaker of the House and Senate President has left a trail of ruin through Maine's economic landscape."
Libby Mitchell has served in the Maine Legislature since 1974. She spent time as Speaker of the House and is currently Senate President. She has supported major tax increases throughout her career, and has pushed for increased taxes on hundreds of products and services. Her record includes millions of dollars in profligate spending, as well as support of failed bureaucratic experiments such as Dirigo Health. She continues to advocate for increased taxes on Maine's working families and small businesses, despite Maine's position as one of the highest-taxed states in the nation.
"No one has caused more problems for Maine's economy than Libby Mitchell," Webster continued. "She has spent her career fighting against economic development. That's why she's afraid to answer questions at this forum. Libby Mitchell needs to stop running from her record and answer to the working people of Maine."
