Animal Lovers Unite; BDN: Topsham man accused of attacking dog in front of children

By Darcie Moore, Times Record

TOPSHAM, Maine — Topsham police charged a man with cruelty to animals after he allegedly threw a dog across a room the day after Christmas.
Topsham police Lt. Fred Dunn said the incident, reported at 7:25 p.m. on Dec. 26, prompted police to issue a summons for cruelty to animals and possession of drug paraphernalia to Johnathan Aday, 28, who was staying with an ex-girlfriend at 20 Harmony Hill.
Aday allegedly came home to the residence, had been drinking and found the dog had got out of its kennel and chewed some pictures in the trailer, police said. Aday became upset and picked up the dog and threw it, in front of two children, Dunn said. The dog hit a metal crate and bent it. Aday then allegedly hit the dog in the head and threw the dog against the wall and kicked the dog’s head and body. Dunn estimated the dog weighed around 50 pounds.
The dog did not appear injured, according to the responding officer.

I hope the dog was removed from the home and notes were made to keep an eye out for possible abuse towards the children

And we euthanize innocent animals everyday just because they don't have homes or are sick. Why are people like this allowed to be here?............. Rott in He!!, you disgusting piece of crap!

Abusing an animal in the presence of the children IS child abuse. It is damaging to see a parent that out of control. Further, violence against pets or even property often implies a threat against the witness to the violence. Better not make me angry, kids, or this will happen to you!

People like this are not worthy of living in this world.

The dog did not "appear injured," according to the responding officer. for the officer, he needs to rethink that statement!! begs the question, what would he do, had it been a child who did something naughty?

Too bad the dog wasn't a breed that could/would fight back.

Like the Topsham police are trained in Animal Injuries. Why isn't the name of the responding officer released. GD thin BLUE LINE code of Silence. At the least the dog should have been evaluated by a Veterinarian. Does the COP also Work for Lisbon Police on the side by chance?
I hope this outrages people to see what is really going on. Animal Cruelty and a friggin cop does nothing,, or is BDN omitting more facts?

It is a shame this behavior goes on in front of children. Not only is this tramatic for the children but what message does it send to the kids. The responding police officer did not force the animal to be seen by a vet since the police officer is not trained in animal medicine. So what message does this send to the kids: Police do not care about abuse to their pets. Also, the message is clear animal cruelity is acceptable in Topsham and it is OK for the kids to abuse animals too. The police officer involved needs to find a different profession.

And nothing will be done about it either! Mr.Aday is a known felon who has been in trouble MANY times with a few prison/jail terms...
