LISBON STUDENTS FIT FOR FINANCIAL PLANNING

Lisbon – “Students from Lisbon had another opportunity to participate in  a unique out of the classroom learning experience on sound financial planning and investment strategies, thanks to the partnership in education with the Maine Credit Union League and The MELMAC Education Foundation,” shares Monica Millhime, the District’s Community Resource Coordinator.  Students from Lisbon’s middle school along with mainstream high school students and their peers at the Gartley Street Program (GSP),  attended a session on money management at the Financial Fitness Fair in Lewiston.  The intense two and half hour event sponsored by Maine’s Credit Unions  invited students to engage in real-life scenarios into the future at age 22.   Students were provided with current market values of expenses and income levels at the specific  jobs of interest according to their personal participant profile.  Members of the area Credit Unions provided portfolios equipped with calculators, fact sheets, charts and spreadsheets for students to prepare their own monthly/annual budgets based on their lifestyle choices.  Credit Union coaches  guided students through the budgeting process and planning of the major expenses associated with the basics in life  including housing, food, transportation, education, clothing, investments, insurance, entertainment, home furnishings, cell phones and credit applications.  “Students were actively engaged with the various aspects of the program all morning, working together as teams to make sure they could meet their monthly expenses,” shared Millhime.  Students attending the program were accompanied by Millhime along with Brian Breton, Gartley Street Instructor, Amy Sewick, LHS Guidance Counselor and Jessica Porter, Jobs for Maine’s Graduates Specialist at PWS and LHS.  FMI on events and programs in the Lisbon Schools email mmillhime@lisbonschoolsme.org or call 754.0021.  Find us on Facebook at Community Resource News in Lisbon Schools.

LISBON 2014 YEARBOOK RECOGNIZED IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

Lisbon - Congratulations to the Lisbon High School 2014 Yearbook Committee for winning an Honorable Mention in the National Yearbook Showcase Contest.  “Our book was recognized for the creativity, excellence in theme, design, photography and writing,” shares Yearbook Advisor, Monica Millhime.    The LHS Yearbook was selected from hundreds of entries from schools with less than 1,000 students.  “We incorporated a number of special features including a panoramic photo of our seniors and an index section identifying 718 individuals, 39 community partners and 3,176 images with captions,” comments Editor, Lorraine Bard.  A special thanks to Double-Take Photography who provided the off-site images of seniors at the Portland Head Light.  Other photography assistance was provided by Boutot, Cathy Case, Kokopelli, Sea Mist and Sandy Orr Photography.  “Thanks to the galvanized support from the community, parents and staff students created a keepsake edition capturing the journey in their education at 2 Sugg Drive in Lisbon Falls for years to come,” said Millhime.  FMI on other programs and events in Lisbon Schools call 754.0021 or email mmillhime@lisbonschoolsme.org.  Check out the last activities at Community Resource News in Lisbon Schools on FaceBook. 

 

 

 

        

Lisbon Seuss Bulletin Board Winners‏

LISBON DR. SEUSS BULLETIN BOARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

Lisbon – One of the highlights of the annual Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration held at Lisbon Community School (LCS) on Friday, March 6, were the bulletin boards created by students and their teachers.  “Grades pre-kindergarten through grade four participated,” shares Monica Millhime, Lisbon’s Community Resource Coordinator.  “Teachers and students decided on themes, the layouts and the designs of their Dr. Seuss themed boards and were very excited to have completed their contest entry by the night of the event.”  

Over 400 attendees were invited to tour the LCS campus prior to the featured guest readers to vote for their favorite display.  “The energy was kinetic throughout the school leading up to the evening events.   Students also had an opportunity to tour the displays and were quick to compliment the various participating classrooms.  Entries featured some of the all-time favorite Seuss books and provided lessons in creativity, teamwork, strategic planning and the ability to meet deadlines.”

Lisbon Parent Meeting Date Changed‏

LISBON HIGH SCHOOL PARENT MEETING DATE CHANGED

Lisbon – The Lisbon High School Parent Group Meeting originally scheduled for Monday, March 23 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the LHS school library, 2 Sugg Drive, Lisbon Falls.  Directly following this meeting will  by a Lisbon School Committee meeting at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Office in Lisbon.  The Parent Group meetings are typically held on the fourth Monday of the month, but will be on Wednesday for the March meeting only.  The agenda is as follows:

LISBON'S MIDDLE SCHOOL HOSTING POETRY CONTEST

Lisbon - In celebration of April being National Poetry month, students at Lisbon's Philip W. Sugg Middle School will be participating in the annual Poetry Contest supported by District Librarian, Katy Dodge, and Library Assistant, Tim Gaudet.  The program will run from Monday, April 13th through Friday, April 17th.   Library  windows at the 4 Sugg Drive campus will display the title, author and first line of thirty different poems. Students are required to research and write the poem's second line on their individual entry form for the contest.   The poems include old and new classic pieces by Maya Angelou, Longfellow, Shell Silverstein, Ogden Nash in addition to some famous lyrics from songs about the Civil War and the wild, wild west. Lisbon HS to Host FUSE Siemens Event‏

LISBON STUDENTS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN FUSE CHALLENGE

High school students try out FUSE challenges of Wind Commander and a Solar Roller at a Siemens outreach event.

Lisbon – A group of 60 Lisbon High School (LHS) freshman students will be participating in green technologies program called FUSE on Tuesday, April 14.   The FUSE program invites young people to explore hands-on challenges inspired by real-world STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and design practices.  FUSE is a new kind of interest-driven learning experience developed by researchers and educators in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University.  Siemens has partnered with Northwestern and created classes offered to students in grades K-12. 

The Siemens Building Technologies Division in Buffalo Grove, Ill., is the North American market leader for safe and secure, energy-efficient and environment-friendly building and infrastructures.  As a technology partner, service provider, system integrator and product vendor, Building Technologies has offerings for fire protection, life safety and security as well as building automation, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and energy management. 

The FUSE program offers a wide array of challengers that appeal to students’ existing interests in music, design, and pop culture.  Students work in teams of five at their own pace to complete the FUSE challenges, leveling up through increasingly complex projects and producing unique artifacts along the way.  FUSE Facilitators for the event at LHS, 2 Sugg Drive, Lisbon Falls, will be Science Teachers Rita Newell and Anne Wallace.  Teachers will assist with problem solving during the challenges presented by the complex projects.  Combining STEM programs with FUSE classes provides an additional approach to the sciences for a more diverse group of students.

LISBON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CONNECT WITH MITCHELL INSTITUTE PROGRAM

Lisbon -  “We are pleased to have the Mitchell Institute Aspirations Program Scholars at Lisbon High School,” shares Shari Jordan, LHS School Counselor. “ Sophomores that participate are learning about college planning through interactive presentations.”   As part of this program students get to meet with Bowdoin Scholars a few times at LHS and then they have the opportunity to visit Bowdoin College on March 27th for an information session, lunch, and a tour. Lisbon's Kahler Receives MPA Award‏

ARIANNA KAHLER RECEIVES MPA PRINCIPAL'S AWARD

Lisbon Falls - Arianna Kahler, daughter of Robert and Julie Kahler of Lisbon Falls, a senior at Lisbon High School, has been selected to receive the 2015 Principal's Award, Principal Nicholas Gannon announced today.  The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals' Association (MPA), is given in recognition of a high school senior's academic achievement and citizenship.

                                                                                 

"Throughout her years at Lisbon High School, Ari has distinguished herself in the classroom, on the playing field, and as a leader in the school and the community," Principal Gannon noted in making the award.  "She very much deserves this recognition."

Arianna and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 12:30 p.m.

The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler.  Mr. McGowan and Mr. Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association.  This year an additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.

The Principal's Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine's school administrators.

LISBON PRINCIPAL GANNON ANNOUNCES STUDENTS OF THE 2^nd QUARTER

Lisbon High School (LHS) administrators and staff are pleased to recognize students for their excellent overall performance.  Family members of the most recent student of the quarter awards were invited to attend the recognition.

Lisbon – Lisbon High School, Principal Nicholas Gannon, announced the Students of the 2^nd Quarter during a school-wide assembly on Monday, March 9.   Parents, grandparents, and siblings of the recipients were invited to the stage during the award presentations to congratulate students.  Students are nominated by staff members for their community service, academics, co-curricular activities, sports participation, good citizenship and overall positive reflection of the student body. 

Awards this quarter were presented to senior, Loren Grant.  Grant is the daughter of Pamela and George Grant of Lisbon Falls.  “Loren is a conscientious student who is organized.  As a Lisbon Junior Volunteer she assists at a local nursing home.   She has been accepted at UMO for Pre-Nursing and USM for Biology.  She also has received the USM Scholars Award,” shared Gannon.  Ashley Patten, daughter of Audra Segars of Whitefield was the junior student of the quarter.  “Ashley is a responsible young woman who actively engages in Spanish class activities and is always seeking new learning opportunities.  She exhibits maturity and kindness and is a positive role model for others.”  Kaylin Le, is a member of the sophomore class.  She is the daughter of Christy and Eric Le of Lisbon.  “Kaylin is always upbeat, happy, helpful, kind, is a Lisbon Junior Volunteer and is a very talented athlete that plays three sports.”  Freshman of the quarter was awarded to Cheyenne Pesce, daughter of Adria Groh and Christopher Pesce of Lisbon.  “Cheyenne always gives a consistent quality effort in class.  She has a great attitude and works well with others.  She voluntarily participated in Poetry Out Loud beyond the classroom competition, a prime example of her enthusiasm for school and her willingness to work hard.”

Students are presented with a plaque, school supplies, a library pass and gift certificates from Lisbon’s partners in education, Dunkin’ Donuts and the YMCA in Auburn.

Lisbon Dr. Seuss Night Hosts Over 400‏

LISBON CELEBRATES ANNUAL DR. SEUSS EVENT WITH RECORD ATTENDANCE

Lisbon – The halls throughout Lisbon Community School were filled with Dr. Seuss pajama designs and other costume clad students, parents, staff, and community members celebrating the National Read Across America Program with a Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration.  Guest readers arrived at the school campus located at 33 Mill Street in Lisbon on Friday, March 6^th,  to find a record number of attendees.  Sue Ramsay, Officer Jeff Picard, Chief Sean Galipeau, Sue Bornstein, Shawn Wright, Heather Wilmot, Jo Jean Keller, Judith Rowe and Ron Hood provided readings to children, and their parents, from the most popular collection of Dr. Seuss books.  

Guest receptionists Lorraine Bard and Lisa Caron welcomed over 400 attendees to the event.  “Thanks to the combined efforts of our adult and junior volunteers throughout the district, we had a fun-filled family night in Lisbon,” shares Lisbon’s Community Resource Coordinator, Monica Millhime.  “Anticipating a larger crowd from the 300 attendees last year, we opened our doors earlier at 4:15 p.m. to allow visitors the opportunity to get their faces painted with Dr. Seuss characters.   

Donations from the face painting were targeted for use by the LCS Library.  An added feature this year were the impressive displays of Dr. Seuss themed bulletin boards designed by classroom teachers and their students.  Guests were invited to vote on their top three choices of bulletin boards.”  Homemade cookies provided by Lisbon’s Nutrition Director Jim Damsgaard, and his LCS kitchen staff, were a huge hit.  Door prizes and iTune gift cards for the winning bulletin boards were provided by the LCS PTO group.  

Junior volunteers offered popcorn sales thanks to a donation from the Auburn Flagship Cinema.  Proceeds from the sales benefit local non-profit agencies. Ron Hood, an avid collector of Seuss and Pez items donated a Sneetches collectable.  Jo Jean Keller from the Lisbon Library contributed a Dr. Seuss tote bag as a door prize.   “According to the feedback received after the event, folks are already looking forward to next year’s event.”

METEOROLOGIST VISITS LISBON COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Mallory Brooke, WMTW Channel 8 Meteorologist, visited students at Lisbon Community School (LCS) on Wednesday, March 11.  Brooke was welcomed back for her second Weather Unit visit by LCS students and teachers. Lisbon - On Wednesday, March 11, Meteorologist Mallory Brooke, WMTW Channel 8 TV,  visited with third grade students at Lisbon Community School (LCS).  Third grade students and their teachers, Kathy Dow, Sue Hardison, Ashley LaCroix, Stacy White and Tayler Grenier welcomed Brooke’s return visit to LCS.  “Mallory’s visit assists students with their weather unit studies and future aspirations in their educational journey for career options,” shares Sue Hardison.   Brooke stressed the importance of science and math skills for weather forecasting.    “Meteorologists view many computer models to predict weather conditions,” shared Brooke.

LISBON STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT REGION 10 TECHNICAL

Lisbon – Two Lisbon High School students, Peter Bucher and Stevie Charest were recognized at Region Ten Technical High School as Students of the Quarter during the Recognition Breakfast held at the school on Friday, February 13.

Bucher is enrolled in the Auto Collision Repair course and Charest is studying to be an EMT. 

Hard work and consistent work really do pay off.  Peter has perfect attendance,  is attentive, routinely makes a good effort, is respectful of his classmates and instructors, is cooperative and helpful, and generally has shown that he has what it takes to be successful.  His grade is A+.  His instructor describes Peter as a model student who is great to have in class.  Peter's comment on being named Student of the Quarter - "This is great!"

At Region Ten, students complete an application as part of enrolling here,  Stevie is the only person who has ever submitted her application with a resume and a cover letter.  Stevie exhibits exceptional interaction during class, creates discussion, asks questions, pays attention and spends time outside of class on course work.  Stevie also shows leadership abilities and peer support to fellow students.  Stevie's comment on being named Student of the Quarter - "My hard work is paying off!"

Lisbon Students Assist LACO‏

Lisbon –Members of Lisbon Schools’ Junior Volunteer Program assisted with the Lisbon Area Christian Outreach (L.A.C.O.) Second Valentine’s Day Soiree on Friday, February 13.  The five course turkey dinner held at Holy Trinity Church in Lisbon Falls benefited the LACO Food Pantry.  Door prizes were awarded and entertainment was provided by Just Us Entertainers.  “We served 200 people and raised over $3,600 thanks to the support of the Lisbon Community,” shares Carol Day, co-director of LACO. 

L.A.C.O. is conveniently located at the MTM building, 16 School Street in Lisbon Falls, and is open to anyone in need who resides in the towns of Bowdoin, Durham and Lisbon.   The L.A.C.O. Food Pantry operates through the generous giving of local volunteers from seven area churches.  Hours of operation are Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Residents wishing to visit the food panty for assistance are asked to fill out an application and must show two forms of identification, a photo ID ( i.e. driver’s license) and a utility bill, etc., providing proof of address.  Students in the Lisbon community have support the food panty with food drives throughout the school year and assist with stocking and organizing. 

The clothing bank is open to anyone free of charge.  Donations of clothing or bedding can be dropped off when the clothing bank and food pantry are open.   Items also may be left in the plastic bins outside the entrance to the food pantry and clothing bank at the rear of the MTM Center.  Questions regarding L.A.C.O. may be directed to Carol Day by emailing patab@myfairpoint.net.  

Lisbon Students Accept Titan Challenge‏

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT TITAN CHALLENGE EMBRACED BY LISBON STUDENTS

Lisbon – Students enrolled in Lisbon High School’s Alternative Education Program at 19 Gartley Street in Lisbon,  accepted the Junior Achievement invitation to compete in the annual Titan Challenge.  The event was held on February 11 on the campus of USM Lewiston/Auburn.  Teams of students discussed the best practices for managing a virtual manufacturing company  while operating with six key business concepts for price of product, production levels, marketing expenses, research and development costs, capital investments and charitable contributions.

LISBON HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST BOOK FAIR APRIL 2

 Lisbon – During a recent Lisbon Community School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting Lisbon’s Assistant Superintendent, Heather Wilmot, addressed the group.  Wilmot shared the school’s Strategic Educational Plan by explaining the planning process, mission, vision, and the guiding principles recently adopted for the Lisbon School Department.  “As leaders of learning and change agents for the Lisbon School Department, we are passionate about developing a plan for transformative change,” shared Wilmot.   

The PTO is a 501C3 charitable organization comprised of committed and dedicated, staff, parents, guardians, and community members.  The LCSPTO sponsors fundraisers and initiatives to support the classroom and other in-school education initiatives, provides information and educational resources for parents and families, and also sponsors monthly, free family events that are available to all of the families in the school.

Lisbon HS Respect Day March 4, 2015

LISBON HIGH PROMOTING A RESPECT DAY WEDNESDAY MARCH 4

Lisbon – Members of the Lisbon High School Project UNIFY group is holding a Respect Day on Wednesday, March 4 in conjunction with Spread the Word to End the R Word on this day.  The program will include morning announcements promoting Respect Day/Spread the Word to End the R Word after the Pledge every morning.  Pledge sheets will be distributed in all student Advocacy’s groups to engage participation throughout the school’s population.  Posters will displayed for students to further their commitment by signing to promote the group’s mission.  Stories and related activities specifically addressing RESPECT will be shared in Advocacy groups on Thursday, March 5.
