Middle School Boys Soccer Results, 10/9/14, PWS vs Hall-Dale

The PWS Greyhounds demonstrated undying determination in a rigorous away bout with the Hale-Dale Bulldogs ending at 4-4.

Bulldog offense struck early with the first goal by Alec Byron in the first minute of play. Greyhound Scott Smith #4 responded four minutes later feeding the ball to Striker Noah Austin #11 who fired in Lisbon first goal of the game. The half ended with two more Hale-Dale goals, Matt Albert and Avery Stewart each scoring.

Lisbon returned after the break fired up, with strong plays from Jack Tibbets #8 and DJ Douglass #3 assisting two more goals by Austin three minutes after the whistle and then another with only seven minutes left of play to take the lead.

Then with just under three minutes in the game Hall-Dale's Jared Roberts slipped a final goal in to end the well fought game in a tie. The [0-2-6] Greyhounds next game will be at home versus Cony, Thursday, October 16.

Town of Lisbon and Lisbon School Department Self-Funding Energy Reduction Project

Town of Lisbon and Lisbon School Department
Self-Funding Energy Reduction Project

Purpose:
The Town of Lisbon and the Lisbon School Department have come together, to find a creative way to fund much needed infrastructure improvements to our facilities.  Through research, it has been found that many municipalities and school departments have utilized performance contracting with great success.

Background:

In January, 2014, the Town of Lisbon and the Lisbon School Department selected SIEMENS Industries to complete a comprehensive energy audit. In May, SIEMENS provided recommendations and detailed calculations for Facility Improvement Measures for consideration.

Performance Contracting:

Performance Contracting is an agreement between a building owner (Lisbon) and an Energy Services Company (SIEMENS) that identifies, designs, and installs energy related improvements that pays for the new equipment over time and guarantees their performance.

Benefits of Project:

There are benefits for the both the municipality and school department:

·         The project has 100% no risk to the Town or the school department, whereas, the risk of the project goes to SIEMENS,
·
The performance of installed equipment is guaranteed.

Meaning, the energy savings from the new boilers, insulation, controls, gas conversions and ventilation improvements pay for the project,

·         Eliminates the need to go to  tax payers to pay for the improvements,

·         It is funded through a federally subsidized, Energy Conservation Lease Purchase, that saves the Town and the school department money over the term of the project; and,

·         If the Town or the school department were to have a shortfall in savings on the project, then SIEMENS is responsible for making up the difference in savings.
How the Funding Works:
Before Performance Contract
After Performance Contract

Payments to Utility Providers (100%)
Savings in Excess

Service Payments
Guaranteed Portion
Payments to Financing Institution

The PWS Greyhounds tied the Richmond Bobcats in a 3-3 rematch on an ideal Lisbon field. Richmond was first to score early in the game and soon fired in another to put Lisbon down 0-2. Lisbon stepped up the defense with Seth Dyer #20 and Jacob George #16 breaking off Bobcat attacks while offensively Hounds like Scott Smith #4 and Jack Tibbets #8 kept Richmond's own defense scrambling and Striker Noah Austin #10 scored 2 points to tie up the game by the end of the half. The Greyhounds returned from the break still fired up with Austin completing a hat-trick to take the lead. Richmond found the net once more to end the game with a tie. The [0-1-5] Greyhounds next face Gardiner for a home game on Wednesday, October 8.

Lisbon HS Alumni Contribute International Community Service!‏

Two Lisbon High School Alumni Serve in Haiti

Brian and Meghan (back row) pictured with children that take part in PID’s programming in Blanchard, Haiti.

By Brian Craig

Brian and Meghan Craig are 2009 and 2011 graduates of Lisbon High School. Brian received his bachelor’s degree in Christian Ministries and Biblical Studies from Gordon College and is now pursuing his Masters of Divinity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Hamilton, MA. Meghan is now pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene and a minor in Sociology at the University of New England in Portland. While in high school both were very involved in journalism and community service.

Early on August 13th Meghan and I left to travel to Haiti. The organization we were working with in Haiti was called Partner’s In Development (PID). PID strives to help impoverished communities attain independence and whole life improvement. PID’s work in Haiti started in 1990. PID has various programs in Haiti that include a medical clinic, small business training for Haitians, micro-finance loans so that families can afford a new home, and they have a child sponsorship program. PID provides material, financial and educational resources, which enable the poor to construct and implement their own programs for development.

Our stay in Haiti was spent in the village of Blanchard; which is situated right next to the capital city of Port-au-Prince.  The majority of our time was spent serving and building relationships with the Haitian people. During our trip our team stayed on the PID compound. Meghan and I helped serve PID by being on the construction crew. While in Haiti we painted, mixed cement and sifted sand from rock, and worked hard to complete the new administration building on PID’s compound. When this administration building is completed by the end of September PID will have more room to expand their medical clinic and be able to serve more people in the community. We worked extremely hard and accomplished so much during our time in Haiti. The highlight of being on the construction crew was that we had the opportunity to work directly alongside Haitians and we all were able to learn so much from them.

In addition to these service projects, we were able to build relationships with the children in Blanchard. According to Meghan, “My favorite part of the trip was interacting with the children of Haiti. I had the chance to volunteer with the yoga program that PID offers for the children of Blanchard, and it was such a powerful experience to interact with the children. I learned so much from the children.” PID is a truly wonderful place that gives these children safety and real opportunities for their future through the child sponsorship program. On our breaks at the worksite the children would run over and play with us and to see the smiles on their faces as we played games with them was one of the most rewarding parts of the trip. PID has over 400 children enrolled in their sponsorship program and these donations are helping struggling families all over Haiti. If you are interested in sponsoring a child in Haiti you can visit http://www.pidonline.org for more information on how to sign up.

Another powerful part of the trip was touring Port-au-Prince and seeing the devastation that still remains from the earthquake four years ago. There are still thousands of people living in tents. Even though there is so much despair from this tragic event, God is doing powerful things in this country. We encountered so much hope in Haiti. Haitians are some of the hardest workers and they are determined to rebuild and bring growth to this country.

Meghan and I are so thankful to the community of Lisbon and our friends and family for financially supporting this trip. We ask that you please keep Haiti in your prayers because we saw so much hope but there is still a lot to be done in Haiti. God taught us so much through this experience. It was such a great blessing to work with a great organization like PID and this fall when I am back at school I hope to continue to volunteer with them in their local Ipswich, MA warehouse. This service learning trip was truly a life changing experience!

Lisbon HS Track Ground Breaking‏

LISBON HIGH SCHOOL TRACK GROUND BREAKING - HISTORIC MOMENT IN LISBON!

Members of the Lisbon Community joined Superintendent Richard Green and members of the School Committee during an early morning Ground Breaking Ceremony at the campus located at 2 Sugg Drive In Lisbon Falls.  Pictured (l-r): Lisbon School Committee members, Marcey Croskill, George Caron, Kathi Yergin, and Traci Austin; Superintendent Richard Green; Track Coach, Dean Hall; owner of Maine Tennis and Track, John Cornish; and Lisbon High School alumni and representative from Labbe Construction, Bob Walton.  Photo courtesy of Monica Millhime.

Lisbon - The morning of July 14, 2014, marked a historical moment for the citizens and school community of Lisbon, Maine.  Richard Green, the Superintendent of Schools for the school department, greeted a small group of guests for a ceremony to begin a long awaited construction project to renovate the Lisbon School Department’s track and field.  Guests who attended the ceremony included the Lisbon School Committee, school department employees, students, and members of the public.  John Cornish, the owner of Maine Tennis and Track and Bob Walton, a Lisbon High School graduate and representative from Labbe Construction were both present.

Superintendent Green acknowledged the members of the Lisbon School Committee for their role in providing the direction, guidance and support throughout the process.  He further personally thanked the citizens of Lisbon and Lisbon Falls for their support of the track renovation project.  He noted that, “What seemed like an impossible dream will start to become a reality today.”  He recognized the commitment that the citizens have made to the school department and noted that it is our goal to, “Make sure that you see a return on the investment.”

Members of the administrative team and central office support were thanked as they worked quietly behind the scenes to make sure that the track process continues to move forward.

Richard Green noted that there were many citizens in the community who were not “quiet” throughout the early stages of the track project and bond referendum.  Many people worked to make sure everyone was aware of the importance of the track project and for this he showed gratitude on behalf of the school department.  Superintendent Green acknowledged two individuals in particular who were very involved and vocal.  Dean Willey, a parent, has been actively involved over the last year and managed to fund and organize a private campaign to support this renovation project.   Secondly, Coach Dean Hall, who has called the track home for many years, was involved with the track campaign since its inception.  Many young lives have been impacted as a result of Mr. Hall’s influence and there was probably nobody more anxious than him to get this project started. Knowing how long Coach Hall waited for this day, Superintendent Green passed the ceremonial shovel to him to break ground.  The ceremonial shovel and sample of soil will be placed on display in the new Lisbon High School gymnasium that is scheduled to begin construction in the next few months.
