Along with my youngest son Joe I have just returned from Washington after participating in the health care protest over the weekend. We left Chris tied to a tree behind the camp for fear he would get out of hand if we took him with us. (not really, Chris was traveling elsewhere and is beside himself that he wasn’t there) The trip was not wasted. (based on CNBC there were at least 14 people there) In spite of what the media fails to report I can tell you that there were tens of thousands that attended and like us, they attended and traveled from all over the country and with less than 2 days notice of the rally. To experience the unfiltered passion and the commitment of fellow Americans was quite uplifting in spite of the fact that we experienced a setback in this particular battle. The only televised media coverage I have seen relates to the one unsavory moment of the weekend that I am aware of (a racial slur.) I have seen no coverage of the thousands of Americans that conducted themselves loudly but orderly, committed but polite, and passionately but respectfully. Please have no doubt as to the passion and commitment exhibited by this cross section of young people, retirees, professionals, tradespersons, and veterans. I will not continue to be discounted and treated as if irrelevant.
    
My weekend experience in Washington was the nail in the coffin confirming my opinion of the self serving, egotistical, corrupt, greedy, and socialist power mongers that are currently in control of our government.   In my opinion the majority of the Washington incumbents consider themselves not only untouchable but of a different class and I find them to be without humility if not despicable. They believe that we are peasants and that the White House is their castle. They lock themselves in their Capital offices and refuse to answer the door that we own.  Believe me I really knocked loudly and they were in their offices. I dare not name them. Alan Boyd, Alan Grayson, Mike Michaud .  They (congress) ignore the will of we the people and they refuse to honor the Constitution of this great country based upon which it is our duty and responsibility to take this country back. If we fail to act, both decisively and successfully, in that event, we deserve to suffer the consequences.

We have to do this for both our children and grandchildren. My personal opinion is that without a massive change in Washington this November we are in danger of losing our freedom as we know it. Look around you, we have already lost so much. Those of you that are of the boomer generation as I am know that we are far from the country and culture that we once knew. The government has inserted itself into every part of our lives. They are well on the way to destroying our currency, they are brain washing our children through the education system, they have invaded our privacy, we have to ask permission to put an extra bed in our garage or to cut a tree on our own property.  We are required to get permission to fish or lobster for a living and are then restricted to the point that you can’t make a living, OSHA can fine me if they don’t like the way I shovel snow from my roof and the list goes on. Last summer the federal gestapo came to my property (2 separate times) in order to get GPS coordinates on my house. Don’t laugh, they probably did yours when you weren’t looking. I just happened to intercept  them walking down the driveway. (he won’t do that again) Why should I need a permit to have a gun so I can defend myself if need be?  At any rate you either get the idea or you are comatose. No problem, we need neither spineless nor comatose people on our team anyway.

Political correctness is to the point that if 1% of the people (a minority) in this country were easily identifiable because they had a piece of rebar sticking out of their nose and that same group regularly tried to blow up airplanes it would seem logical that we would pay special attention to them (profiling) instead of the blind 97 year old grandmother in a wheelchair with drooling mouth syndrome.  No,  political correctness  dictates that Homeland insecurity instead stick a rubber glove up a new born’s butt  to check for a laser guided missile because the guy with the rebar in his nose might get offended so instead they check anything that breathes and probably dead bodies as well.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way nor does it have to be. I urge all of you to keep the faith. There are many, many people that feel the same as we do about this terrible government take over that they call healthcare. Based upon the polls that say 65-75% of the subjects people in this country did not want this legislation  I have to believe that we still have a majority. We just have to get off our asses and do it.  I have made a personal commitment to become much more involved and to no longer stay on the sidelines while throwing heavy objects at the TV. If you like I will keep you in the loop and advised of our activities. Otherwise you can just keep drinking the kool aid and that will just leave a lot more clear water for us freedom lovers.

I simply want the government out of my life. It’s not about healthcare, it’s about power and control and if you can’t see it just let me know and I will be happy to take you off my email list as there is only so much room in the bunker anyway.

Lisbon – Tired of all the rain and looking for some fun-filled entertainment to kick-off your weekend?  You are in luck!  Lisbon High School students have the perfect solution.  Plan to attend the Talent & Variety Show at the school on Friday, March 26.  The event is open to the public with a show time of 7 p.m.  Admission tickets are available at the door - adults $3 and only $2 for students.  The Show will be held in the school’s gymnasium.  “A variety of acts and entertainment, sure to please everyone are planned for one night, and one night only”, shares Paul Giggey, Tech Club Advisor for the school.  “Thanks to the generosity of Two Rivers Family Dentistry, Lisbon Federal Credit Union, Don’s Automotive, Lisbon Falls Florist and The Furniture Superstore over $100 in door prizes will be awarded during the show.  Raffle tickets are $1 each and will be available at the door and during intermission.  “One of the goals at the school is to offer the community an opportunity to see the talent our students have on and off a playing field.”  FMI call 353-3030 or email pgiggey@lisbonschoolsme.org.  All proceeds benefit the Lisbon High School Tech Club.

 

Rare Bird Sighting Update!

As recently reported on The Lisbon Reporter, a flock of flamingos was spotted reversing their normal migration pattern and heading north for more temperate weather conditions.  This flock was recently spotted wading along the banks of the Piscataquis River in Kittery, confirming the projected arrival the evening of April 5th.  If you are interested in donating a $10.00 delivery fee to make sure these flamingos find a safe habitat for that evening, call Kristy Sheehan for more information at 577-5398.

Rural school has formula for success

A web of support keeps teens from dropping out, and almost all of them go on to college.

JACKMAN — While school officials across Maine search for ways to reduce the state's 20 percent dropout rate, Forest Hills Consolidated School regularly graduates all 15 to 20 of its seniors and sends them off with college or career plans in hand.

It might be easy to dismiss this rural outpost, on the western border with Quebec, as an example of how to keep kids in school. After all, Jackman and Moose River, the two tiny towns served by the K-12 school, don't have many of the challenges and distractions faced by larger, more urban districts. The nearest McDonald's is 75 miles away in Skowhegan. Crime is so rare that there's no local police department. The local telephone directory is a pamphlet.

Except that these towns have taken a unique, whole-community approach to education that observers say is a valid example for large and small districts across the state. In the past seven years, residents of Jackman and Moose River have willfully developed a web of support for their school that includes every facet of the community, from business people to social service agencies to civic groups.

Lisbon Community Welcomes Meteorologist Sarah Long‏

Sarah Long, from WGME, visited third grade students at Lisbon Community School on Monday, March 1 to share information on her job as a Meteorologist.   Pictured with Long is Michael Farrington from Mrs. Anne Clayton’s third grade class at LCS comparing his size to an actual weather balloon. Long’s presentation complimented the grade three classroom studies of weather units.  Students had an opportunity for questions and answers with the local TV weather personality, and requested autographs following her presentation.

Lisbon - On Monday, March 1, Meteorologist Sarah Long, from WGME Channel 13,  visited with third grade students at Lisbon Community School.   Students and their teachers, Anne Clayton, John Espejo, Debbi Furrow, Heather Goddu and Garrett Goldsmith welcomed Long to assist with real-life classroom connections with their weather units.  “My earliest weather memories were big snowstorms and loud thunderstorms. I would stand at the front door with my dad and watch and listen to the thunderstorms roll on by,”  shared Long.  “Growing up I never thought about meteorology as a career, it wasn't until I was 18 years old that I realized I could study weather as my job - once I found out I could, I knew I wanted to be a meteorologist.”

Long introduced students to computer models for predicting the constant changing weather conditions.  Students were invited to participate in a display of weather balloons comparing their size with the weather instruments.  Long shared some of her experiences forecasting the weather from the top of Mt. Washington.    “After four years in college earning my degree in meteorology, I got my first job working and living in some of the world's most extreme weather, right here in New England, on the top of Mt. Washington for the Observatory,” commented Long. “I was a weather observer and researcher for four years and would live every other week on top of the mountain. I measured hundreds of inches of snow while I was there, stood out in winds over 120 MPH, and got to live with the Observatory cat, Nin. Mt. Washington is also where I started giving radio forecasts and got over my fear of speaking in public, it was time to try something new, and that's when I decided to forecast on television.”

Citizens Want To Vote on the Lisbon Budget‏

At the March 16th Town Council meeting the Council held a "workshop" on a
charter amendment concerning putting the town budget to a referendum vote.

This should have been placed on the agenda and not a "workshop" with no
public input or discussion.

The Council has been asked to at least give the voters an opportunity to
vote yes or no on weather they would like to vote on the town budget as has
been done with the school budget for the past 2 years.

Citizens have been requesting the Town Council to make the necessary change
to the Charter so that we, the taxpayers can vote on the town budget for
several months now, and all we get is stonewalling.

Councilor Gina Mason said she has not received any calls nor has anyone
approached her concerning this matter. Kind of hard to call as I could not
find her phone number in the phone directory. Mark Lunt's and Lori Pomelow's
numbers are not listed in the phone directory either.
 
So, if you, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer would like to have a say on how your taxes
are spent, if you would like to vote on the Town Budget as we have on the
School Budget, call or e-mail your Councilors!

we suspect that they will be scrubbed as we know the phone calls are.}

Lisbon Senior Exhibitions‏

Lisbon – Lisbon seniors had a opportunity to meet with Betsy Libby, Associate Dean of Student Services at Central Maine Community College on Wednesday, March 3 and Thursday, March 4.  Libby spent two days at Lisbon High School making presentations during senior English classes on the art of public speaking. Seminars were scheduled to assist students with their Senior Exhibition Projects.  Libby offered tips on preparation, visual aids and related techniques for the student presentations scheduled before a panel of judges at the high school on Thursday, March 18 and Friday, March 19.  Senior Exhibitions are a graduation requirement at LHS.  Students select a topic, embark on their research journey, spend 15 hours with a mentor, document work, and write a thesis paper making the connection with their project to a real life experience.  Students are required to prepare a notebook and ultimately create a visual project for presentation to a panel of judges.  “Senior Exhibition Projects represent a learning stretch for students going beyond their current level of expertise,” shares LHS Librarian, Judith Lashman.  Students will be scored on content, organization, speaking skills, visual enhancements, and their ability to answer questions about the topic. 

Great Weather For Collecting Signatures

 And that is exactly what you will find one of Maine's Independent Candidates for Governor, Kevin L. Scott doing.  The Independent party has until April 1, 2010 to turn in 4000 signatures in order to 'get on' the November Ballot. Twice as many needed than those of main stream party candidates  I recently had a chance to sit down and 'have a chat'  with him. It was short and pretty much to the point.  The typical 'chitter/chatter' quickly turned to the 'meat & potatoes' for our time allotment.

The signature deadline is May 25th but that is a false deadline.

April 1st was my target for folks each getting 45 - if you had three people (including you) get 45 plus my 20 day March effort I would be done by April 1st.

The issue is this - the sooner I am officially on the ballot the sooner TV, newspaper, etc... start to cover my events, press release, etc...

May 25th is false because the signatures need to be verified by each municipal registrar of voters by May 25th.  Needless to say you do not walk into any little town office and say "here, do all these now okay".  So, with April  looming I need to get signatures into town municipal offices for verification - then they must be recorded at the State immediately after.

So, April 1st is a target for small individual efforts - that obviously can go to to April 15th or so now but not much more.}

First and foremost what anyone will notice about Kevin is his Energy.  Readers, he is similar to a ''ball of energy' unlike anything that I have never seen'.  He is articulate, poised, determined and experienced.  His understanding of the current events in Maine are very close to mine and many others that I know.  Without getting into specifics, cause lord knows how one can get going on that, most of us are experiencing some uncertainties with happenings around us.  We you actually read and listen to Kevin Scott it doesn't take long to see that his approach is refreshing.

He has a wonderful story to tell about his experience with issues in the Public's business environment.  He is a "breath of Fresh Air to Maine's Political Climate". Kevin needs help collecting signatures right here in the Lisbon Community.  If anyone can help him collect at least 45 signatures please contact: lisbonreporter@hotmail.com and let them know.  They have signature blanks and can make arrangements to get them to you.  And with all this nice weather is sure does make it a nice time to sit at the transfer site and collect signatures for local petitions.  Been there, done that!

 Our dialogue jumped right into context with politics  and I asked what "his" thoughts were on the following issues on the table for anyone to ask.

1. Guns

2. Abortion

3. Medical Marijuana

4. Gay Marriage

5. Casino in Maine

Kevin L. Scott in his own words, responded openly and honestly with the following.

1. Guns - right to bear arms is a constitutional right, period.
2. Abortion - tough one.
3. Medical Marijuana - all for it, regulate the product. No doctor I know will write a script for marijuana if it is not appropriate.
4. Gay Marriage - tough one.
5. Casino in Maine - I am all for engineering jobs, I am a little anti gambling. I say enact State legislation allowing gambling of the casino resort bring 100 electromechanical technicians, SW engineers, or mechanical engineers with it. Slot machines are manufactured and repaired, I want that as part of the deal.


Todd, I find it interesting that these "social issues" continue to dominate our voting "litmus test" These are religious issues, moral issues, local issues, or privacy issues that National or State government should not be involved with.


We have reduced out voting population to a bunch of people being taxed to death, over regulated, privacy deprived, and welfare burdened. Add to that an irresponsible foreign policy and monetary policy. Yet, as voters, we focus a great deal of our energy on what our neighbor is doing in their own private life?


Obviously the conditioning that the party system has done over the years has moved voters away from what is "our business as voters" and into other peoples private business. This conditioning has succeeded and continues to make us more and more divided and at each other personally and not focused on our government and civic responsibilities.

Forest Fire Warning From Maine Forest Service

Forest service issues Maine fire warnings

AUGUSTA, Maine — The National Weather Service and the National Weather Service on Wednesday issued a red flag warning of the possibility of wildfires for areas near Greenville and Millinocket south to the coastal areas of Hancock County and all of Washington County.
This warning was in effect through Wednesday evening and could be issued again Thursday depending on weather conditions.

High winds and low relative humidity have created dangerous conditions that could allow wildfires to spread rapidly, the Forest Service said in a press release. Several wildfires have occurred over the last few days, including a 6-acre wildfire in Orland, which threatened two structures.

The Maine Forest Service in the release urged all residents to postpone their outdoor burning until there is a significant rainfall.

To report any wildfires, call 911 or 800-750-9777.

How many people live in your home? Are any of them Hispanic? Are the people who live in your home citizens? How big is your home? Do you have difficulty making decisions or climbing stairs? These are just a sample of the highly detailed and personal questions asked in the mandatory American Community Survey the U.S. Census Bureau will send to a sample of some 3 million U.S. households in addition to the 2010 Census.
Refusing to answer the questions or answering them incorrectly will subject citizens to hefty fines.

The U.S. Census website for the American Community Survey warns that under Title 13 of the U.S. Code, Section 221, anyone who refuses to answer the 11-page 48-question survey, or who answers the questions with false information, will be subject to a possible $5,000 fine.

Art teacher, Amy Crosby, displays art pieces made by her students at Philip W. Sugg Middle School.

Lisbon - Over the last three months, Ms. Amy Crosby has been my art teacher at Philip W. Sugg Middle School in Lisbon Falls.    Ms. Crosby has taught me so much about art, it has been so exciting to attend her art classes.  As a student media reporter for our school, I had an opportunity to interview Ms. Crosby.   “I’ve been interested in art my whole life,” commented Ms. Crosby.  In an effort to share the work of her PWS students with the public, Ms. Crosby set up a website.  To view all the great student art projects visit  http://picasaweb.google.com/PWSuggArt.

The website was created so everyone would be able to see the work by students and “gain support” for the art curriculum in Lisbon schools.  With all the budget issues this year, Ms. Crosby wanted everyone to know why it is important for the school to keep the arts program.  “Art is so important for all aspects of life and helps students link together all subjects,” according to  Ms. Crosby.   “It helps to create well rounded students.” Ms. Crosby graduated from the University of Maine and has been teaching Art for four years. 

As the end of the year is fast approaching, don’t forget to mark your calendar for the final band/art show on Wednesday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m.  Students invite members of  the community to attend and  support all the students who worked so hard this year.

Lisbon - On Saturday, March 6^th the Science Olympiad Team from Philip W. Sugg Middle School in Lisbon competed in their second Science Olympiad competition at the Waynflete School in Portland.  The teams consisted of students in the sixth and seventh grades.   This year, thanks to the sponsorship of the PWS Parent Action Group, over 30 students were able to participate.  The team brought home 26 medals, and received a third place trophy during the event. The coaches, teachers Mrs. Marilyn Curtis, and Mrs. Jen Robitaille. received a plaque from the State Olympiad Committee for their participation as Outstanding Coaches.  PWS students competed against the best students from other areas schools, some of which were students in ninth grade.  According to Mrs. Robitaille, “What this experience has done for me is that it really shows what we the teachers teach in our classroom carries over each year.”   “Each year we have competed, we have learned so much from the different teams.”   Over 100 hours was dedicated by Mrs. Curtis and Mrs. Robitaille to prepare for the event.  “Students worked so hard all year to prepare for the Science Olympiad,” shared Mrs. Curtis. 

Congratulations to all the students and coaches for another successful competition.

Lisbon – On Tuesday, March 2,  Philip W. Sugg Middle School Principal, Jeff Ramich, and Assistant Principal/CCD, Thomas Landberg, announced the second quarter Student Achievement Ashlee Stone Memorial Awards. Sixth grader, Breeann Sautter; seventh grader, Kailyn Hill; and eighth grader, Jennifer Smith.  Student were presented a plaque during the announcement ceremony.  Each quarter, members of the sixth, seventh and eight grades are nominated by grade level teachers.  The award has been renamed in honor of the memory of former PWS student, Ashlee Stone.   “The award is given in memory of Ashlee Stone, a seventh grade student, who was a positive role model in our school.  Ashlee was known for her willingness to learn, having a positive attitude, being respectful to adults and her peers, being a risk taker, persevering when the going got rough, handling conflict with grace, being a friend to everyone, being a leader, and especially for her smile.  These students were chosen for this award because they demonstrate all or many of these qualities,” shared Ramich. 

Breeann Sautter, a sixth grade student, is the daughter of Nicole and Doug Sautter of Lisbon Falls.  “Breeann is extremely conscientious and works diligently no matter what the subject.  She always has her work done and it is done well.  Breeann participates in all class activities and does what is asked of her,” shares Ramich.    “Breeann is an independent worker.  She is a member of student council and has been a very active Lisbon junior volunteer for the last two years assisting with school and community projects.”

Seventh grade student, Kailyn Hill, is the daughter of Bobbi and Glenn Hill of Lisbon.  “Kailyn is a delight.  She has been a Lisbon junior volunteer for three years and is responsible, helpful, polite and very pleasant,” according to Ramich.  “Kailyn wants to do well and is a smart girl.  She takes risks in the classroom daily and always tries her best.  She is just a sweetheart.”

Jennifer Smith, an eighth grader, is the daughter of Lee Ann and Bradley Smith of Lisbon Falls.  “Jennifer is a role model for respect.  She is kind, empathetic and just a nice person,” according to Ramich.  “Academically, Jennifer strives for perfection and performs above her peers.   She shows critical thinking skills and problem solves independently.  She is actively involved in student council and sports.  Jennifer was also nominated to attend the Girls’ Day at the State House in Augusta.”

Do You Know What Happened 190 Years Ago Today?

Today, Maine marks its 190th anniversary as a state. If Rep. Henry Joy, R-Crystal, has his way, the state won’t reach its 200th — at least not in its current configuration. Rep. Joy wants to divide the state into Northern Massachusetts (the southern and coastal portions) and Maine (that would be the “real” Maine, north of Augusta). As ludicrous as that sounds, that way of thinking dates back centuries. And it continues to curse Maine as it struggles to become prosperous.

Before 1820, the District of Maine was part of Massachusetts. After the War of 1812, which devastated Maine more than any other part of New England (the British occupied the coast from Castine to Machias), residents concluded Massachusetts could not provide protection, and so they united in their desire for statehood. Maine became the 35th state on March 15, 1820, entering the Union as part of the Missouri Compromise, a complex deal that sought to balance slave and nonslave states.

 Guess how many taxes are in this bill??!!

As a citizen concerned about our nation’s health care system, I thought you’d like to know that the health care bill being rammed through the House contains 10 years worth of tax increases to pay for only 6 years worth of benefits.   These taxes total $500 billion dollars over 10 years.  Many of these taxes will affect Americans earning less than $200,000 a year, despite the President’s promise to avoid such taxes.
Here are just a few of the taxes contained in the bill:

• $750 penalty per worker charged to employers who fail to provide government-sanctioned health insurance
• Tax on brand name drugs—totaling $2.3 billion
• Increased penalty for early withdrawal from your HSA (from 10% to 20%)
• Tax on medical devices—totaling $19.2 billion
• 10% tax on indoor tanning services

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU:  Some of these taxes may affect you directly.  Others, like the employer mandate, will cost our economy desperately needed jobs.  Others will have ripple effects through the system that will raise prices for everyone. 

 THE DOCTOR'S DIAGNOSIS:  America needs common sense health reform, not job-killing taxes.  Future Congresses will be under pressure to raise taxes even further to pay for future years of an expanded government-administered health care system.

As this process unfolds, I will continue to work to represent you, bring common-sense to this debate, expose abuses of power and do all I can to prevent bad policy from becoming law.

Social Security - An EXCELLENT SUMMARY!

Social Security  Your Social Security   Just in case some of you younger folks (& some older ones) didn't know this. It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it..   Be sure and show it to your kids. They need a little history lesson on what's what and it doesn't matter whether you are Democrat or Republican.. Facts are Facts!!!   Our Social Security Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised: 1..) That participation in the Program would be Completely voluntary,   No longer Voluntary!   2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program,   Now 7.65%   3.) That the money the participants  put Into the Program would be deductible from Their income for tax purposes each year,   No longer tax deductible   4.) That the money the participants paid in social security would go into  the Independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the General operating fund, and therefore, would Only be used to fund the Social Security  Retirement Program, and no other  Government program, and,   Under Johnson the money was moved to   The General Fund and spent by Congress   5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees Would never be taxed as income.   Under Clinton & Gore   Up to 85% of your Social Security payments can be Taxed   Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are Now receiving a Social Security check every month -- And then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of The money we paid to the Federal government to 'put Away -- you may be interested in the following: ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ---- Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the Independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the General fund so that Congress could spend it? A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically Controlled House and Senate.  ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -- Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax Deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding? A: The Democratic Party.  ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ----- Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities? A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the 'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the  US  ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- - Q: Which Political Party decided to start Giving Annuity payments to immigrants? AND MY FAVORITE: A: That's right!   Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, Began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, Even though they never paid a dime into it!  ------------ -- ------------ --------- ----- ------------ --------- --------- Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!  And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!   If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of Awareness will be planted and maybe changes will Evolve. Maybe not, some Democrats are awfully Sure of what isn't so. But it's worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to? Actions speak louder than bumper stickers.   AND OUR CONGRESS, REGARDLESS OF PARTY AFFILIATION, GIVES THEMSELVES 100% RETIREMENT FOR ONLY SERVING ONE TERM!!!   A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have. -Thomas Jefferson
