Wreaths Across America Convoy

I was happy to be a part of the roadside celebration supporting the wreath convoy as it passed through my hometown of Yarmouth, Maine. About a dozen people had shown up around 4;30 PM on Sunday December 5, 2010 and were told that the convoy was just passing through Wiscassett and to come back about an hour later. I came back about 45 minutes later and was right on time to catch the convoy in it's entirety.

Jeff Weinstein - seen in one of the images - was instrumental in organizing the assembly of folks who came out to cheer on the convoy.

The convoy was escorted by a couple of police cruisers with sirens sounding and blue lights flashing and was followed by various other vehicles with lights flashing, horns honking, a stretch limo was in the mix with people waving out the windows at the crowd that had gathered along the road. A light snow began to fall as the vehicles passed.

Within 2 minutes the whole event was over - but it was a moment in time that I will not soon forget. I was glad to have been a participant and to have recorded the moment as I did - there were no other cameras present.

We Remember Pearl Harbor, For Those That No Longer Can

The day commemorates Dec. 7, 1941, when Japan launched a sneak attack on the U.S. Naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack drew the United States into World War II. 

The attack on Pearl Harbor killed 2,388 men, women and children, including 2,340 military service personnel. Another 1,282 were wounded.

The next day, Congress declared war on Japan. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called Dec. 7, 1941, "a date which will live in infamy."

In Spain , at Seville some local people found a way to stop the construction of another mosque in their town. They buried a pig on the site, making sure this would be known by the local press.

Islamic rules forbid erecting a Mosque on "pig soiled ground". The Muslims had to cancel the project...this land had been sold to them by government officials... No protests were needed by the local people .... and it worked!!

Police blame mechanical defect for Prius crash that trapped four inside

DURHAM, Maine — Police say a preliminary investigation into a crash here points to a mechanical defect in the 2010 Toyota Prius involved.
Arthur Lane, 81, of Brunswick, was unable to control the steering as he drove north on Route 125, Androscoggin County Deputy Sheriff Jon Guay told the Lewiston Sun Journal. The car landed on its passenger side in a culvert after running off the right shoulder, through a different culvert and a driveway. Three passengers were trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated.

Local Police, Sheriffs, and State Police At Odds In Massachusetts

Mass. sheriffs draw criticism as they broaden their activities

Police officials statewide say some sheriffs' offices in Massachusetts, especially those in Middlesex and Bristol counties, have expanded their purview to law-enforcement activities that overstep their mission.

In Middlesex County, the sheriff's office has been criticized for its purchases of a mobile training center and armored ballistics vehicle to buttress its law-enforcement capabilities through federal grants. Meanwhile, Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson has irked police officials in Fall River and New Bedford for sending some of his men to those cities to help stem crime. 

Wayne Sampson, executive director of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, said the state's 14 sheriffs offices should primarily monitor the jails they oversee.

Immigration Has A Big History In Lisbon

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States , people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented.

Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved goodbye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany , Italy , France and Japan . None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people.

When we liberated France , no one in those villages were looking for the French American, the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet

Dec. 6, 2011.  The Moxie Festival Committee is pleased to announce the opening of the 2011 Moxie Festival theme contest.  The Moxie Festival is held in Lisbon Falls the second weekend in July. 

Entries can be emailed to debwagner@gwi.net or mailed to Debra Wagner, Moxie Festival Committee, 23 Center Street, Lisbon Falls, ME  02452 until January 31, 2011.  The Moxie Festival will take place July 8-10, 2011.

Win a deluxe Moxie-filled basket as well as an invitation to join the VIPs at the 2011 Moxie Parade review stand on Saturday, July 9, 2011.  According to Lisbon Public Safety Officials, an estimated 40,000 people attend the three-day Moxie Festival.  The Town of Lisbon has approximately 9,300 residents.

Since 1983, The Moxie Festival in Lisbon, Maine has been held on the second weekend in July.  The Festival now includes a three day Pow Wow; Friday night fireworks; a Saturday parade, Festival, and 5K race, and on Sunday, the Chief Worumbo Androscoggin River Race.  Moxie was designated Maine’s official soft drink on May 20, 2005.

Lisbon High School Alumni selected for Juried Art Show Lisbon

Lisbon - Kaitlyn Hunter and Colton Jackson, Lisbon Graduates of 2008, were selected to have their art work displayed for the 2010 University of Southern Maine juried exhibit. USM held the opening for its annual Juried Student Exhibition on Thursday, November 18 in the Gorham Art Gallery. Jurors, Daniel Fuller, Barbara Sullivan and Jody Dube had the difficult task of selecting the strongest art work from the many pieces submitted. Hunter was also one of three artists in the show who won an additional Jurors’ Award for her piece, “Dirty Laundry.” The exhibit will be on display through Friday, December 10 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., Tuesdays-Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. 

Many of the works in the exhibition will move to the Area Gallery in USM’s Woodbury Campus Center on the Portland campus where they will be on display from Monday, January 17 through Thursday, February 17. Hours for the Area Gallery are 7 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Friday. 

All events are free and open to the public. The Galleries are closed for snow days, university breaks, and holidays.

The Recall Petition For Town Council Chair Is Validated

Local resident and Lisbon Concerned Citizen, Dot Fitzgerald pauses before going into the Lisbon Town Office to turn in the signatures gathered for the recall of Town Council Chair Michael Bowie.

We, the undersigned, qualified voters in DISTRICT 2 of the TOWN OF LISBON, Maine entitled to vote in town affairs, hereby propose to recall: MICHAEL ROBERT BOWIE, 282 MAIN STREET, LISBON FALLS ME from the office of COUNCILOR for the following reason(s):

A)    denying any councilor the right to place an item on the agenda (charter sec. 2.04),

B)     not consulting with all councilors when dealing with town manager (charter sec. 2, 04.)

C)    Improper influence and/or conflict of interest regarding use of town funds (chapter 12), and

D)    Failure to properly preside over a Town Council meeting.

THESE ARE ALL VIOLATIONS OF THE LISBON TOWN CHARTER!

 

 After successfully navigating some hurdles put up by the administrators in Town government the petition was issued in the beginning of October.  A group of citizens began circulating and collecting signatures for the removal of Bowie from office through a citizen initiative.  The target goal of 285 (or so) signatures needed to valid such an effort was later amended to 304.  Makes one wonder about the information provided by town officials,  but that is a whole other story.

So after diligently circulating and filling the petitions with signatures,  WAY MORE than enough of them were turned in. Indicating a GREAT frustration with residents, regarding Town Issues of Government Administration by the Town Council.

Just last week the petition was rendered valid by Lisbon's Town Clerk.  Now this is the second of successful petitions to be validated for the removal of a Town Council Chair.  The first was completed in 2008 for the removal of then chair Norma Wells. Only to fall short at the polls because of insufficient voter support.

 

Lisbon residents anxiously  await a chance to not let this one fail.  After some questionable tactics by current Town Manager and fellow councilor to render this petition by the citizens improper.  It was finally validated as sufficient to warrant being put on the next agenda for Town Council meeting scheduled for next Tuesday evening, Dec. 7th.  NOW the waiting continues to see if this will in fact be an item on the agenda.

LISBON FALLS — When the Rick & Abbey Morning Wake Up Show debuts Wednesday, a mix of oldies and friendly, funny banter, hosts Rick and Gwen Rioux will be behind their desks in finance and billing at Central Maine Medical Center, all business.

They’re recording material and working it around tunes the night before. Everyone at WQRY 106 does, not that listeners can tell.

The station was born six months ago after friends and former disc jockeys Rick Rioux and Dan Philbrick agreed they both missed radio, then realized they didn’t have to.

Not with the power of the Internet.

Lisbon HS Community Service Assists Coastal Humane‏

Lisbon - A group of Lisbon High School’s Community Service Club members, and their advisor, Monica Millhime,  attended a training session with Kathy Sullivan, Volunteer Coordinator at Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick on Tuesday, November 30.  Students are anxious to assist  as cat socialization volunteers and others areas at CHS.  “Volunteers are the core of our existence,” shares Sullivan.  CHS cares for 3,000+ stray, abandoned, abused, and owner-surrendered animals, seven days a week, 365 days each year.   FMI on  CHS opportunities, donation items  needed, or to become a volunteer, call 725-5051.
