The wrestlers of LHS participated in two large tournaments recently.
December 13 was the McDonald's Tournament held at Mt Valley High School. The Lisbon team came in second only to the reigning Class B state champs from Belfast High School.
They produced 3 champions on the day with Mike McNamara at 125 pounds, Marcus Bubar at 145 pounds and Joe Doughty at 215 pounds.
Coming in second were Josh Pomerleau (119), Kyle Huston (152), Cam Bubar (171) and Art Stambach (189). Lisbon had 2 third place finishers, Forrest Cornell (112) and Matt Nicholson (130), and 2 fourth place finishers, Mike McManus and John Gamache. Out of the 14 weight classes, Lisbon had 11 wrestlers place.
The following weekend, December 20th, Lisbon attended the Wells Atlantic Invitational Tournament. Here, Lisbon dominated the day by placing first beating its closest competitor by a resounding 80 points. Lisbon had 5 champions, Mike McNamara (125), Matt NIcholson (130), Kyle Huston (152), Cameron Bubar (171) and Joe Doughty (215). Forrest Cornell (112) and Art Stambach (189) placed second while Marcus Bubar (145) and Dan Schofield (285) placed third. Josh Pomerleau (119) rounded out the day in 4th place.
There were some very exciting matches on the day, one of which was Forrest Cornell beating Shane Daly from Wells for the second time in as many meetings. Shane Daly placed second in states last year, losing to Carlin Dubay of Caribou who then went on to win the New England Championship.
Congratulations go out to Joe Doughty and Mike McNamara who have won two tournaments in a row.
The week after Christmas has two tournaments. Monday and Tuesday the team travels to Noble High School in Berwick, Maine for a two-day tournament and then Friday and Saturday travels to Sanford for the Redskin tournament, another two-day event.
These are very tough tournaments and feature many teams from out of state. If you are a wrestling fan, these tournaments are a "cant miss!" If you can't make it but are interested in how the team is doing, remember to visit their website at http://www.lisbonwrestling.org/ to find records, stats and a ton of pictures.
