Can Any People Help Out the Green Thumb Gang?
To all readers, a wish for a wonderful 4th of July weekend. We are truly blessed to live in a nice town in America and enjoy the freedoms we have.
Before I state my call for HELP!, I would like to give a bit of information about our town Gazebo. Rufus Ham recently power washed the Gazebo and it looks shiny and new! New RW&B banners have been hung and the gardens will be weeded again before Moxie Days.
As many of you know, when my nephew Glen Ham passed away suddenly several years ago, and John Harris passed away the next weekend. The Green Thumb Gang received many donations in memory of these two men.. It was decided to gift the town with the gazebo, and the rest of the money was raised by citizens who purchased space on the large brass plaque in the big rock garden near the Gazebo. After much looking, I decided on the style chosen because I wanted the straight lines and the custom designed stars that are in the crescents and hanging to represent the 'Stars and Stripes' that are so dear to the hearts of all Americans.
This is a unique design, and I have never seen another Gazebo with the stars. Credit Charlie Tibbetts who custom made the first stars to fit inside the 'moons' Just a little tidbit of info for the 4th.
I am writing this article to ask for the help of all citizens who enjoy living in Lisbon and all the natural and created beauty that surrounds us . This is a very tough time in our recent history, but it is a great time for citizens of all ages to to step up and show their Moxie. As the plaque on the large rock by the Gazebo reads "The spirit of a community is forged by the character of its citizens".
With Moxie Days upon us, help is needed to clean up the last two gardens in our town. We give a big thanks to Pine Knoll for adopting the Welcome to Lisbon gardens near the Topsham line and also the MTM gardens, and to Riverbend Landscaping for taking over the Welcome sign near the Durham/Lisbon bridge. The town crew of Mark Jones, Thatcher Plourde and Ben Doucette have done a herculean job of keeping grounds, parks and fields-mowed and looking good despite all the rain.
The Mighty Androscoggin being true to form.
With the beautiful exceptions of the Miller Park Trail Area, the town Library garden and the Town Office, all the other gardens around the town have been taken care of by members of The Green Thumb Gang. WE NEED HELP!! There are two large garden areas that have not been touched this year - The beautiful Smith & McCarthy Park across from Graziano's and the entire planted area which runs alongside the sidewalk on Village Street near Graziano's. If any of our citizens are interested in helping to get these areas in shape before Moxie Days, please call Faye at home 353-5771 or work 353-2728 and leave a message and number.
My hope to get at least 20 persons who will come to the S&M Park at 6:00 PM on Weds. evening to work for one hour ( or shorter) ( raindate Thurs.evening) . It's rewarding, it's fun and it's an opportunity to help our community. Maybe some will even want to join the Gang. We have lost several members in the last couple years and some new and stronger bodies would be most welcomed.
The tasks are varied and as easy as you want. Please call and join us and see w hat the Gang is all about. If you plan to show up, please bring a digging hand tool , gloves if you wear them and a small bucket if you have one. I hope my phones will be ringing!!
Thank you,
Faye
