Lisbon High School Ice Hockey Team‏

To the Citizens of Maine, Representatives of the MPA and Athletic Supporters,

I am writing to you in an effort to bring attention to the plight of the Lisbon High School Ice Hockey Team. My son, Justin, is a sophomore at Lisbon High School and a member of this team. Historically the LHS Ice Hockey Team has struggled financially to survive. However this year a lack of participation has brought it to the brink of extinction.

In July a request was submitted to the Maine Principal’s Association to consolidate the LHS and Oak Hill Ice Hockey Teams with Mt. Ararat’s Ice Hockey Team. We recently received notification that our request was denied. The MPA indicated that by combining the teams a “Super School” would be created. The MPA has further stated that had our request been submitted prior to a May 1st deadline the “Super School” issue could have been overlooked.

The Lisbon High School Administration underwent significant changes in the past year. Addressing this issue was not the priority that perhaps it should have been to those in a position to take the necessary steps. For this lack of action, nine athletes will not be able to play ice hockey this year. Worse yet, due to the fact that there will not be a team this year funding for next year is likely to be cut.

As atheletes, parents, and a community we are outraged at the lack of support the MPA has demonstrated to its mission to promote interscholastic activities. Our athletes have demonstrated greater commitment through their fund raising efforts and participation in summer hockey leagues to maintain and improve their skills.

In summary, I ask you and ask that you ask the MPA and your readership this: If the “Super School” issue can be overlooked than why not overlook it?” Certainly, one could answer with the fact that the request was not submitted in a timely manner. However, when extenuating circumstances exist and something greater is at risk do we adhere to rules for the sake of rules or do we move in the direction that promotes and encourages our athlete’s and do what’s right for kids? After all, isn’t this our primary purpose and goal?

I am hopeful that you will be able to support our efforts to have the MPA reconsider their decision.

Hoping for your support,

Pamela Grant
