Lincoln County's sheriff says his department can provide Damariscotta the same coverage at less cost.
The Associated PressDAMARISCOTTA — Officials in Damariscotta are weighing whether to eliminate the town police department and hand over law enforcement duties to the county sheriff.
Selectmen will meet Wednesday night to vote on a proposal from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department to take over policing of the town.
Proponents say the move could save money.
Town Manager Matt Lutkus says the town's department with five fulltime officers, including the chief, plus several part-time positions, costs about $505,000 annually.
