RECAP TOWN COUNCIL WORKSHOP – SEPTEMBER 25TH
I want to congratulate Chairman Fern LaRochelle for conducting a very professional and productive workshop. This was the first time, I had attended a workshop which was excellently orchestrated and Chairman LaRochelle had complete control at all times.
Approximately 30-35 individuals attended and provided immense information into the Moxie Festival. The majority of the attendees had been volunteers and shared their experiences with the group. The purpose of the workshop was to see how much interest was left in the community and to see how to improve the Moxie festival.
Brenda Rogers provided a history of the Moxie Festival starting with the first book signing in 1984 and the first parade in 1985. Mrs. Roger continued on with the history until 2012.
Scott Benson provided an overview of the expenses and revenues involved in putting on the Moxie Festival. The financial report has never been provided to the people or the town council for 2012. Every year, the people have asked for this information. However, Scott Benson did not provide a financial report of the 2012 Moxie Festival.
Scott Benson went on to explain who benefits from this event: residents, visitors, businesses and non-profit organizations. I believe it was Brenda Rogers who said the Moxie Festival was the largest fund raiser for these non-profit organizations.
Scott Benson also identified three problem areas: the loss of volunteers, the increase man-hours being utilized by the town staff to offset the lack of volunteers and the logistics involved with putting on this event.
Chairman LaRochelle then opened up the workshop for input by the attendees. This period lasted approximately an hour and a half with extremely meaningful comments and suggestions. These comments and suggestions were too many to record here but the important thing is everyone was working together. All of this information was recorded by Scott Benson, it will be evaluated by the Moxie Festival Committee and others and then Chairman LaRochelle said we would have another workshop with the results.
All in all a very successful workshop, I hope the town council will continue to conduct all workshops in this manner.
