Milestones
Family Wellness Center of Brunswick, Me is dedicated to helping women
and families have satisfying and healthy birth experiences.
Milestones, located in the Fort Andross building, offers
non-clinical, holistically-oriented, evidence-based education and
support to individuals and families in the childbearing year and
beyond. In addition, they are hosting a toLabor Doula Training
Workshop on May 3-5, 2013 with the goal of increasing numbers of
doulas practicing in mid-coast Maine and beyond.
“We
want women and families to have positive experiences of birth and
have the best outcomes possible for themselves and their babies,”
says Milestones Co-Founding Director Tiffany Avery. “We believe
providing evidence-based information to clients and supporting them
in their unique journey will help them to make conscious and healthy
decisions for themselves, along with their care-providers. One of
the ways we know we can increase positive birth outcomes is to
encourage the use of a doula. We are hoping that more and more
people in Maine learn the benefits of hiring a doula and having a
doula present at their birth.”
And,
in fact, studies have shown that doulas can have a significant impact
on the outcome of a birth including a 50% reduction in the cesarean
rate, 25%
shorter labor, and a 60% reduction in epidural requests amongst other
things. Other studies have indicated that mothers with support
through their pregnancy, birth and postpartum have lower rates of
postpartum depression and an increased overall satisfaction with
their experience of birth.
toLabor
(the Organization of Labor Assistants for Birth Options and
Resources) is a national doula training organization whose mission is
in alignment with Milestones mission. toLabor's
intention is to educate and certify professional birth doulas so that
they may help women and their partners become active participants in
their birth. The toLabor Doula Training is aimed to teach new doulas
the information, skills and techniques to support their clients
through the process of labor and birth.
“There is a movement
happening,” says Gina Forbes, Co-Founding Director of Milestones
and toLabor Workshop Sponsor. “Women are demanding their right to
have a safe, healthy and empowered birth experience and
well-educated, professional doulas are definitely a part of the big
picture of creating positive change for women and families in Maine
and beyond.”
