The FBI currently has hundreds of investigations of potential homegrown terrorists under way, with cases open in every state.
FBI Director James Comey warned that there are as many as “thousands” of people inside the United States taking in ISIS’ online “poison.”
“We have a very hard task” in trying to identify and stop anyone inspired to launch an attack inside the U.S. homeland, Comey said.
Comey noted as recently as two years ago that the FBI could focus on tracking those within the U.S. who visited jihadi websites, but a shift to social media by ISIS sympathizers has changed all that.
The director told ABC News: “It’s almost as if there is a devil sitting on the shoulder saying, ‘Kill, kill, kill, kill’ all day long…[They are] recruiting and tasking at the same time. … In a way, the old paradigm between ‘inspired’ and ‘directed’ breaks down here.”
