Lisbon HS Healthy Decision Day‏

Lisbon Police, Lisbon Fire Department and Lisbon Emergency work together with Lisbon High School students’ local Chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (S. A. D. D.) re-enacting an accident scene during a previous Health Decision Day.  This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, April 16 at the high school from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
 
 
Lisbon - On Friday, April 16 all Lisbon High School students and staff will have an opportunity to take part in the Sixth Annual Healthy Decisions Day sponsored by the local Chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A. D. D).  The event promotes alternative activities for students.  The highlight of this year’s event will feature activities on the dangers of Texting and Driving.  Other workshops will include a Lisbon Police Department K-9 Demonstration, Operating Under the Influence (OUI) golf chart challenge (weather permitting), Healthy Eating Tips, and an Iron Chef competition.  Directly following workshops, a school-wide assembly will be held featuring a presentation from Channel 6, WCSH Reporter, Susan Kimball.  FMI contact S.A.D.D. Lisbon's PWS Elliot Warren Award Announced‏

Philip W. Sugg Principal, Jeff Ramich congratulates Elliot M. Warren Outstanding Citizenship Awards winners.  Students are nominated by their peers and chosen by grade level teams.  The award is in memory of a middle school student, Elliot Warren, who passed away during the 1999-2000 school year.  Pictured (l-r) Ramich, Adrianna White, daughter of Sylvia and Jackson White of Lisbon; Jack Caron, son of Lisa and George Caron of Lisbon; and Brandon Hess, son of Patti and Brian Hess of Lisbon Falls.   Monica Millhime Photo
 
 
 
Lisbon – On Thursday, April 8 at Philip W. Sugg Middle School in Lisbon, Principal Jeff Ramich, announced sixth grade student, Adrianna White, seventh grade student, Jack Caron, and eighth grade student Brandon Hess, as the recipients the 2010 Elliot M. Warren Citizenship Award. 

“Elliot Warren was an exemplary young man who attended Lisbon Public School until his untimely death in November 1999,” shared Ramich.  “Elliot’s strength and courage is remembered by all who came in contact with him.  The award is a tribute to Elliot and the fine citizen he was.”

The award is presented to outstanding citizen from each grade; nominated by students and chosen by each grade level team.  “At Philip W. Sugg Middle School, we recognize students for their citizenship through this award,” commented Ramich.

“Students are recognized in the following areas:  Caring, polite and helpfuldemonstrating a genuine concern for other students and staff; demonstrating good manners in class and all around the school; and providing assistance to students and staff.  Hard-working, resourcefulness and respect:  Students demonstrate effort in completing classwork and homework; and demonstrate respect toward students and staff,” shares Ramich.

“The process for selection of the recipients is two-fold,” according to Ramich, fellow students and teachers offer nominations.”

Freeport police alarmed by dispatch merger plan

It seems like a pretty straightforward idea: Dispatchers in Brunswick answer public safety calls from Freeport, so why shouldn't they also dispatch that town's police cars, firetrucks and ambulances.
Freeport's Town Council had no problem answering the question. It voted Tuesday night to approve a new contract under which Brunswick will dispatch Freeport's public safety calls for $10,000 a month, plus a one-time fee of $122,500 for equipment upgrades.
Town Manager Dale C. Olmstead Jr. said the contract will save Freeport about $100,000 a year, the difference between what the town will pay Brunswick and the cost of the salaries and equipment for its own dispatch center.

The Dinner Roll‏

Once upon a time I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind.  I live in a free country. There's nothing that the government can do to me if I've broken no laws.  My wealth was earned honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor.

I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room.
We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen.  The Great Seal was embossed on the China. Uniformed staff served our dinner. The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen. "Sorry 'bout that," said the President. "Andrew is very hungry."

"I don't appreciate..." I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty.  It was just a dinner roll. "Of course," I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp.  "And his brother, Eric, is very thirsty," said the President.
I didn't say anything.  The President is testing my compassion, I thought.  I withheld my comments and decided to play along.  I don't want to seem unkind..

My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite. "Eric's children are also quite hungry." With a lurch, I crashed to the floor.  My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room. Their grandmother can't stand for long."
I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool.  Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game.  I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President. "Their grandfather doesn't like the cold." I wanted to shout, "that was my coat!"  But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport.  I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled.

Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone.  I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in.  The President hadn't moved or spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him.
"Andrew's whole family has made bad financial decisions.  They haven't planned for retirement and they need a house.  They recently defaulted on a sub-prime mortgage.  I told them they could have your home.  They need it more than you do." My hands were shaking.  I felt faint.  I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor.

The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak, and drank his wine.  I lowered my eyes and stared at the small gray circles on the tablecloth that were water drops.
"By the way," he added , "I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I'm firing you as head of your business.  I'll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There's a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can't come to you for jobs groveling like beggars."

I looked up.  The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his creme Brule. He drained the last drops of his wine.  As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me.  I clung to the edge of the table as if it were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss.

I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived.  The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, risk and struggle. Why was I punished?  How had I allowed it to be taken?  What game had I played and lost?  I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us. What had I done wrong?

As if answering the unspoken thought, the President suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands. "You should have stopped me at the dinner roll," he said.

 About a dozen citizens,  sat and watched acting chair Gina Mason call the meeting at 7:05pm. Not enough councilors showed up to have a quorum to hold the meeting. Present were Mark Lunt, Roger Cote, & Gina Mason.


Was this another planned setup by the 'shadow government' that has been running this town?

We have all heard the saying, "Freedom isn't free". Of course, that phrase means that the freedoms that we enjoy today are the result of the blood, sweat and tears of our forefathers and mothers who pressed onward in the face of great hardship -- continuing to stand and fight for what they knew to be right -- to create these United States that we call home. Freedom ISN'T free. It requires the willingness to remain vigilant, to take action, and to make sacrifices when necessary to ensure freedom for our children and our childrens' children.

Now is the time to press onward to ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is preserved as intended by our forefathers -- not as interpreted by legilators and lawmakers who enact laws that infringe on your right to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Comments On Water Rates From Department Chairman

I just wanted to comment on your article about water rates.
The Lisbon Town Council does not set the water rates for the Town of Lisbon.  This is the responsibility of the  Lisbon Water Board and an increase in water rates has been asked for.   The increased should be around $2.00 to $3.00 per month per meter.  There will be a public hearing on the request on May 5 at 7:00.   All increases in water rates must go through the Maine Public Utilities Commission and if approved the new rates would go into effect sometime later this year.  The public has the right to file a petition to object and to demand additional hearings which could hold up the rate increase until the end of the year.   The last increase in for the Lisbon Water Department did have such a petition filed and cost the department and additional $60,000.00 in fees and charges.
Out of 144 water companies Lisbon is the 9th from the bottom.  The information is available on the Maine Public Water Utilities web site.   I know full well that the Lisbon Water Department is not without its problems, but I do feel that the Lisbon Water Department does a fine job at managing its finances.  Yes, always room for improvement.
If the Route 9 Upland Road project is to continue the water rates must go up.  I presented these facts to the town council well before the town citizens voted for the bond issues.
I remain open to comments from the citizens of the Town of Lisbon.

Something to Think About

I'm 63 and I'm Tired

I'm 63 Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired.   
I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it.  
I'm tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes to "keep people in their homes."  Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick, I'm willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at three times the price of our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on one-third of my salary, then let the left-wing Congress-critters who passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community Reinvestment Act that created the bubble help them with their own money.  
I'm tired of being told how bad  America  is by left-wing millionaires like Michael Moore, George Soros and Hollywood Entertainers who live in luxury because of the opportunities  America  offers. In thirty years, if they get their way, the United States  will have the economy of   Zimbabwe  , the freedom of the press of   China  , the crime and violence of   Mexico  , the tolerance for Christian people of   Iran, and the freedom of speech of Venezuela  . 
I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tells them to.   
I'm tired of being told that "race doesn't matter" in the post-racial world ofObama, when it's all that matters in affirmative action jobs, lower college admission and graduation standards for minorities (harming them the most), government contract set-asides, tolerance for the ghetto culture of violence and fatherless children that hurts minorities more than anyone, and in the appointment of U.S. Senators from Illinois.   
I think it's very cool that we have a black president and that a black child is doing her homework at the desk where Lincoln  wrote theEmancipation Proclamation. I just wish the black president was Condi Rice, or someone who believes more in freedom and the individual and less arrogantly of an all-knowing government.   
I'm tired of a news media that thinks Bush's fundraising and inaugural expenses were obscene, but that think Obama's, at triple the cost, were wonderful; that thinks Bush exercising daily was a waste of presidential time, but Obama exercising is a great example for the public to control weight and stress; that picked over every line of Bush's military records, but never demanded that Kerry release his; that slammed Palin, with two years as governor, for being too inexperienced for VP, but touted Obama with three years as senator as potentially the best president ever. Wonder why people are dropping their subscriptions or switching to Fox News?  Get a clue. I didn't vote for Bush in 2000, but the media and Kerry drove me to his camp in 2004.   
I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let  Saudi Arabia   use our oil money to fund mosques and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in  America , while no American group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in  Saudi Arabia  to teach love and tolerance.   
I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate. My wife and I live in a two-bedroom apartment and carpool together five miles to our jobs. We also own a  three-bedroom condo where our daughter and granddaughter live. Our carbon footprint is about 5% of Al Gore's, and if you're greener than Gore, you're green enough.   
I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses while they tried to fight it off? I don't think Gay people choose to be Gay, but I damn sure think druggies chose to take drugs. And I'm tired of harassment from cool people treating me like a freak when I tell them I never tried marijuana.   
I'm tired of illegal aliens being called "undocumented workers," especially the ones who aren't working, but are living on welfare or crime. What's next?  Calling drug dealers, "Undocumented Pharmacists"?  And, no,  I'm not against Hispanics. Most of them are Catholic, and it's been a few hundred years since Catholics wanted to kill me for my religion.  I'm willing to fast track for citizenship any Hispanic person, who can speak English, doesn't have a criminal record and who is self-supporting without family on welfare, or who serves honorably for three years in our military.... Those are the citizens we need.   
I'm tired of latte liberals and journalists, who would never wear the uniform of the Republic themselves, or let their entitlement-handicapped kids near a recruiting station, trashing our military. They and their kids can sit at home, never having to make split-second decisions under life and death circumstances, and bad mouth better people than themselves. Do bad things happen in war?  You bet. Do our troops sometimes misbehave?  Sure. Does this compare with the atrocities that were the policy of our enemies for the last fifty years and still are Not even close.  So here's the deal. I'll let myself be subjected to all the humiliation and abuse that was heaped on terrorists at Abu Ghraib or Gitmo, and the critics can let themselves be subject to captivity by the Muslims, who tortured and beheaded Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, or the Muslims who tortured and murdered Marine Lt. Col. William Higgins in Lebanon, or the Muslims who ran the blood-spattered Al Qaeda torture rooms our troops found in Iraq, or the Muslims who cut off the heads of schoolgirls in Indonesia, because the girls were Christian. Then we'll compare notes. British and American soldiers are the only troops in history that civilians came to for help and handouts, instead of hiding from in fear.   
I'm tired of people telling me that their party has a corner on virtue and the other party has a corner on corruption. Read the papers; bums are bipartisan. And I'm tired of people telling me we need bipartisanship. I live in  Illinois , where the "Illinois Combine" of Democrats has worked to loot the public for years. Not to mention the tax cheats in Obama's cabinet.   
I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.   
Speaking of poor, I'm tired of hearing people with air-conditioned homes, color TVs and two cars called poor. The majority of Americans didn't have that in 1970, but we didn't know we were "poor." The poverty pimps have to keep changing the definition of poor to keep the dollars flowing.   
I'm real tired of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or big-whatever for their problems.   
Yes, I'm damn tired. But I'm also glad to be 63. Because, mostly, I'm not going to have to see the world these people are making. I'm just sorry for my granddaughter.

Whole Foods Market announced the recall of its Whole Catch Yellow fin Tuna Steaks (frozen) with a best by date of Dec 5th, 2010 because of possible elevated levels of histamine that may result in symptoms that generally appear within minutes to an hour after eating the affected fish. No other Whole Foods Market, Whole Catch, 365 or 365 Organic products are affected.

The product, sold in twelve ounce bags with Best by Date: exp 05 DEC 2010 with Lot Code: 4853309157A and displays the following UPC code:

* 0-99482-42078-9 Whole Catch Yellow fin Tuna Steaks (Frozen) 12 oz.

High levels of histamine can produce an allergic reaction called scombroid poisoning when the fish is consumed. The following are the most common symptoms of scombroid poisoning: tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, facial swelling, rash, hives and itchy skin, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently.

There have been two reported incidents by consumers. Whole Foods Market feels that while these were isolated incidents, every precautionary measure should be taken when it comes to consumer health and safety. This recall does not impact any other fish or seafood sold by Whole Foods Market.

If consumers have this product with the indicated UPC code and Best By date, they may return it to the store for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company by calling 512-542-0656.

Whole Foods Market has removed the affected lot code from all store shelves. Product was distributed to 28 states plus the District of Columbia including Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Connecticut, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Rhode Island, Maine and Washington, D.C.

A U.S. Army flight surgeon who posted a video indicating his complete rejection of all orders from the military unless Barack Obama documents his eligibility to occupy the Oval Office is now refusing an "unofficial" suggestion from the Army for a medical evaluation.

WND reported this week the Army was hinting that Lt. Col Terry Lakin should undergo a brain scan and medical review.
A spokeswoman involved with the developing case said the recommendation was delivered to Lakin by an unnamed officer who implied those higher up the chain of command thought it was a good idea.
The suggestion was described to WND by spokeswoman Margaret Calhoun Hemenway, a veteran Washington appointee and now volunteer spokeswoman, as being presented in a "solicitous" manner.
Officially, the U.S. Army says it has no plans for formal action at this point against the officer. But Calhoun Hemenway told WND that Lakin's "no" meant "no."
"He is not taking any suggested medical evaluation or brain scan. He is refusing to obey all orders including deployment orders," she confirmed.
"It is interesting this suggestion of a medical exam should arise now given he was only a couple of weeks from deployment and obviously judged to be fit for deployment with his bags packed," she said
