Mounting research shows there’s a compelling link between a particular kind of protein and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's, and Lou Gehrig's disease.

Mad Cow Disease affects cows, while Chronic Wasting Disease is a neurological disease found in deer and elk. As explained in Scientific American:²

As Many as Half of Alzheimer’s Patients Have Prion-Like Proteins

According to research³ published in 2011, TDP-43 pathology is detected in 25-50 percent of Alzheimer’s patients, particularly in those with hippocampal sclerosis, characterized by selective loss of neurons in the hippocampus, which is associated with memory loss.

Research presented at the 2014 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) also revealed Alzheimer’s patients with TDP-43 were 10 times more likely to have been cognitively impaired at death than those without it.^4,5

LISBON STUDENTS OF THE 4^thQUARTER ANNOUNCED BY PRINCIPAL GANNON

Lisbon High School (LHS) administrators and staff are pleased to recognize students for their excellent overall performance.  Family members of the most recent student of the quarter awards were invited to attend the recognition.

Lisbon – Lisbon High School, Principal Nicholas Gannon, announced the Students of the 4^th Quarter during a school-wide assembly on Monday, June 1^st.   Parents, grandparents, and siblings of the recipients were invited to the attend the assembly to congratulate students.  Students are nominated by staff members for their community service, academics, co-curricular activities, sports participation, good citizenship and overall positive reflection of the student body. 

Awards this Quarter were presented to Senior, Victoria Swan.  “Victoria is self-motivated and interested in learning, not just for grades alone, but for the pleasure of understanding something new,” shares Principal Gannon.  “As Jobs for Maine’s Graduates president, she has been a strong leader throughout the year.   She is dedicated to our Career Association focused on leadership, community service and future aspirations in and out of the classroom.  Victoria challenges herself by taking upper level and independent study courses.  She is well respected by her peers, is a team player on and off the court/field, being a valuable member of both the field hockey and basketball teams.” 

The Junior Student of the Quarter was awarded to Darren Elwell.  “Darren consistently works hard and committed himself to Science Olympiad this year putting in many productive hours into his events.  He assisted others on the team with their engineering projects,” shared Gannon.  “Darren is a self-motivated team player and is polite, courteous and respectful to his peers and our staff.” 

Silas Crosby was named the Sophomore Student of Quarter 4.  “Silas is one of the hardest working students in his class.  He has tutored peers struggling with math providing patience, understanding and reassurance,” commented Gannon.  “Silas is a member of the cross country and track teams.  He has been a member of the Community Service Junior Volunteer group since 2011.  He served as Vice President of the group this year and earned the National Presidential Volunteer Service Award.  Silas is a person who is a quality helper, a connected teammate, an involved student, and the potential to be a future community leader.”

Freshman Student of Quarter 4 was Benjamin LeClair.  “Ben is a likeable, friendly, polite and respectful person to his peers and teachers,” comments Gannon.  “He takes Honors level classes, plays baseball, is a valuable member of the Science Olympiad team and is a member of the Community Service Junior Volunteer group.  He was also awarded the National Presidential Volunteer Service Award for his volunteering in school and the community.  Ben is focused, hard-working and committed.”

Students are presented with a plaque, school supplies, a library pass and gift certificates from Lisbon’s partners in education, Dunkin’ Donuts and the YMCA in Auburn.

RECAP TOWN COUNCIL MEETING – JUNE 2ND, 2015

This is a summary of the Town Council meeting for June 2^nd.   The following agenda items under Council Orders, Resolutions & Ordinances was approved by a vote of 7-0:

1.      Request to prepare an RFP for Paving, Road Striping, Library Brick Repointing & purchase of used 4x4 Pickup Truck.

2.     Request for disposition of town owned property.

3.     Sewer Department Mower.

4.     Beaver Park Trailer Expenditure.

5.     Acceptance of Utility Poles for the purpose of hanging banners.

6.     Moratorium Ordinance prohibiting marijuana dispensary facilities (Second Reading).  Councilor Metivier wanted to include caregivers in this ordinance but was voted down by a vote of 3-4.  Councilor Pesce wanted the moratorium to be for 90 days and not 180 and this amendment was approved.  And finally the original agenda item was approved 7-0 with the 90 days amendment.

7.     Schedule workshop for Ordinance prohibiting marijuana dispensary facilities.  A workshop was approved for June 30, 2015.

8.     Lisbon Cemetery Committee (First Reading).

9.     Lisbon Cemetery Ordinance (First Reading).

10.            Itinerant Vendor Ordinance (First Reading).

11.            Treasurer’s Turnover Audit. Was approved with a $10K limit.

12.            Policy & Procedure for the Fiscal Administration of School Accounts Payable and Payroll.

13.            Request to solicit bids for Pierce Apparatus

The following items were tabled:

1.      Renewal Itinerant/Mass Gathering Permit – Riverside Flea Market – James & Paulette Carville.

2.     Renewal Itinerant/Mass Gathering Permit – Positive Change Lisbon (PCL)

The following agenda item was scheduled for a workshop on June 30, 2015.  Fee Schedule.

The following agenda item was announced.  Detective Position.  Detective McAllister has taken a position with the Androscoggin District Attorney’s office.  The Council did not take any action on filling this position until the Police Survey is completed and the findings announced.  

Under Other Business – The Town Manager had no report.  The Atlantic Salmon Federation Upper Dam Report gave a presentation on several options to resolve the issues at the Upper Dam.  The Council took no action awaiting the final report on the project.

A CNN poll released Wednesday shows that George W. Bush is not only more popular than President Obama, a majority of Americans now view the former president in a positive light. A full 52% see Bush favorably, compared to just 43% who do not. Only 49% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Obama. The same number, 49%, do not.

I-295 Northbound in Richmond to Close Starting Sunday

Richmond – Due to the failure of a culvert under the northbound lanes of I-295 in Richmond, MaineDOT is temporarily closing a section of the northbound lanes of I-295 beginning at noon on Sunday June 7^th and reopening by the morning commute on Wednesday, June 10^th.  

Northbound motorists will exit I-295 at the Richmond Exit  43 and will be detoured along Routes 197, 138 and 201 and then back on I-295 in Gardiner  at Exit 49.  This detour should add no more than 15 minutes of travel time according to Joyce Taylor, MaineDOT’s Chief Engineer. “We are temporarily closing the interstate out of an abundance of caution.  We have learned from experience that we can repair this culvert more quickly and more safely if there is no traffic in the area.  It is safer for motorists, safer for work crews and it expedites the timeline for completing the work.” Passenger cars coming from the Portland toward Augusta area are encouraged to use the Maine Turnpike.

The seven-foot diameter culvert is 122-feet long and was installed in 1975. 

The speed limits on I-295 in Richmond will drop 15 to 25 miles per hour as traffic is channeled down to one lane as motorists approach Exit 43 for the detour.  Speed limits on the detour route are being reduced 10 mph and fines will be doubled.  It is anticipated that there will be an increased police presence to ensure motorists obey the temporary speed limits along the rural, residential detour. 

Traffic patterns will change slightly on Routes 197, 138 and 201 as new stop signs and traffic signals are installed to minimize potential conflicts with the detoured traffic.  During the three-day closure, crews will focus only on replacing the damaged section of the culvert.  The remaining sections of the culvert that go underneath the southbound lanes will be addressed in a planned project that will be scheduled in the department’s Work Plan.  “We appreciate the public’s patience as we deal with this unexpected situation and ask that motorists drive safely and courteously throughout the detour,” added Taylor.

LISBON (AP) — As the battle over the state budget heats up in the Maine Legislature, Gov. Paul LePage is heading to Lisbon to discuss his tax overhaul plan.

The Republican governor will hold a town hall meeting at the Open Door Baptist Church auditorium at 26 Gartley Street at 6 p.m.

LePage has been traveling the state to tout his ambitious plan to raise and expand the sales tax to pay for a massive income tax cut.

But his proposal has gained little traction in the Legislature. He acknowledged last week that his plan is "dead."

Here's a tip for those on the Town Council: Start treating the Lisbon taxpayers with the respect they deserve, listen to their concerns and adjust accordingly, represent their interests as stated by them, not what you want, and then, maybe someday the damage done by your self-serving interests will be fixed.  It is up to you.

Lisbon taxpayer's you should leave your "comfort zones" and get to the Town Council meeting tonight where you  can express your concerns directly to the council during Audience Participation.  There are two places, one to discuss items on the agenda and another for "New Items".  This is the process currently mandated by Lisbon's governing body.

Well it appears that Michelle Obama is not yet done championing her own agenda. According to recent reports, Michelle recently decided to appear in Chicago to beg for more gun control. Chicago was an interesting choice for the venue, given that they have both the strictest urban gun control laws, as well as the highest homicide rate in the nation.

Also true to the Obama way, Michelle decided to make herself the focal part of the story. When she spoke of Hadiya Pendleton, the teenage girl who performed at the Obama’s Second Inauguration and was shortly after killed by gun-fired, she couldn’t help making the story about her own struggles.

In a speech today in South Korea, Secretary of State John Kerry said that the Internet “needs rules to be able to flourish and work properly.” This, according to Kerry, is necessary even for “a technology founded on freedom.”

Speaking on behalf of the Obama administration, Kerry said that Internet policy is “a key component of our foreign policy.”

ALERT!! Obama’s DOJ To Circumvent Congress With ‘More Than A Dozen’ New Gun Controls

Obama’s Department of Justice is working on “more than a dozen” new gun control regulations it plans to begin implementing apart from Congress. Some of the regulations are set to be put in place by November, others simply by the end of the Obama administration.

According to The Hill, “the regulations range from new restrictions on high-powered pistols to gun storage requirements” and the issuance of “new rules expanding criteria for people who do not quality for gun ownership.”

You know, we bend over backwards to bring a terrorist back to the US from Egypt… we move heaven and hell to rescue a traitor and trade five of the worst terrorists in Gitmo for him, plus paying ransom… but we can’t seem to get Visas approved for thousands of translators in Afghanistan who helped our warriors fight the enemy. They put their lives on the line for us for years and we are letting the Taliban hunt them down, torture them and execute them. Guess in Obama’s world view, they fought on the wrong side, huh? So much for not leaving any brother-in-arms behind – that’s all Obama knows how to do. One brave translator held on for four years, but was captured by the Taliban earlier this year and murdered. He was loyal to the US till the end. Wish the same could be said for our President.

Just as brave and taking the same amount of enemy fire as U.S. troops on the ground in a Middle East war zone, Afghan interpreter Sakhidad Afghan was always a critical part of any unit he was attached to and was treated like a brother.

Every memorial day this Marine stands in honor of those fallen brothers who serve our country. He’s been doing it for years.

But this Memorial day in 2011 was a bit different from the rest. With a broken wrist and sweltering heat this Marine pushed through the pain and stood in salute for 3 straight hours.
