Lisbon HS New Literacy Specialist Announced‏

Lisbon – Lisbon High School Principal, Kenneth Healey welcomes Mrs. Barbara White as the new literacy specialist/coach at Lisbon High School.  White has been a middle school and high school English teacher with the Lisbon School Department for 18 years.  Prior to her experience in Lisbon, White taught at Brunswick High School, the North Canton, Ohio junior high school, and also was a literacy specialist in the Augusta schools.

While at Lisbon High School, White has taught a variety of English classes and electives, served as advisor for student publications, and began the Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition course.  In 2007, teachers were required syllabi for AP courses approved by the College Board in order to offer the nationally recognized honors level college preparation courses in local schools.  White, and other AP teachers at Lisbon High School, submitted syllabi and successfully established their classes as College Board approved courses that colleges can now reference when students apply to their institutions.

In her new capacity, White is working with teachers to increase literacy skills of students in all content areas.  Her job includes guiding teachers in reviewing standardized test scores pertinent to  reading, math, writing, social studies, and science to help determine ways to design instructional strategies to help students become college and career ready as they complete their high school studies.

Do As I Say Councilor Not As I Do Continues To Rule Lisbon/Lisbon Falls

GOD HELP US

I just looked at the last Town Council meeting and was shocked.  Councilor Pomelow was so disrespectfully to Mrs. Fitzgerald.  Councilor Pomelow interrupted Mrs. Fitzgerald in the middle of a sentence.  Council Pomelow stresses the importance of being respectful at work.  She is always preaching to us to be considerate of people and then she was so rude to Mrs. Fitzgerald.  I thought there were rules about how a councilor should act.  I guess these rules at work and on the council only apply to everyone else and not Councilor Pomelow.

Lights Out or Pay Raises?

Peter Reuter
The Lisbon Reporter

Do you suppose that if OUR town leadership had not graciously given out pay raises to the employees, some 1.75% plus $10k to some department heads that the streets that are now darkened could have stayed lighted?

Presume OUR leadership is doing a great job of taking care to assure the safety for everyone traveling around Lisbon & Lisbon Falls.  They have just repeated exactly what the selectmen did a few years ago also.  Turn out the lights and then after enough people complained turned them all back on again.  And some say history doesn't repeat itself.

Happy Thanksgiving and be extra safe after dark.

We wouldn't want  the "Boogieman" to get you.

or maybe they would have enough to keep the Bus Service going.

Yes! It is terrible the bus service is stopping. I am wondering if there is a grant writer at Town Hall. Most towns have someone writing grants all the time. There has to be some funds out there to keep a city of 9K in a bus service.

Lights Out In Lisbon For Lack Of Common Cents!

COMMON SENSE

In an effort to save tax dollars, the Town Council voted to turn off streetlights.  Now, the Town of Lisbon is dark and susceptible to crime.  Councilor Mason, what does this do for your “Main Street” project?  The Town Council is trying to conserve your tax dollars which is commendable but misguided.

Let’s look at a more viable solution.  What would be the tax dollar savings if the Police and Fire Departments were consolidated to form the Public Safety Department?  We currently have a Fire Chief who is not fully qualified to be a Fire Chief and we are fortunate enough to have a Deputy Fire Chief who is fully qualified and has all the credentials plus is a member of the Maine Fire Chief's Association.  Why in the world should the taxpayers continue to pay for a Fire Chief who does not possess the credentials when we have a fully qualified Deputy Fire Chief?  The tax dollars savings is over $70,000.00 dollars annually (the current Fire Chief’s salary plus use of a town vehicle).

By consolidating the two departments and letting the current Fire Chief go, the Town of Lisbon can save $70,000.00 dollars annually.  This solution would not reduce or eliminate any services provided to the citizens of Lisbon.  However, it would enable the streetlights to remain on and would not put our residents at risk.  Having the streetlights out puts our people at risk and increases the possibility of crime.  Since both of these options are public safety issues which makes more sense to you?

Keep in mind, with the streetlights out Brooks will be looking for additional funds to increase his police force next year.  Why are we continually shooting ourselves in the foot when common sense can provide a reasonable and profitable solution to the problem?

Yes! Your right. One point ,, we could start up an aux police dept to work with the others. The aux dept would be made up of citizens who volunteered. Keep up the good work

Just Remember the Volunteers Do The Work!

Thanks for the giving of the volunteers

Unfortunately, this is the time of year when the grand standing and glory seeking individuals come out of the woodwork.  Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for all we have received and should not be used as a photo opportunity for low-life local and state politicians.

The many volunteers, who work very hard in the preparation of the Thanksgiving meal, should be the ones receiving all the credit for their efforts.  These people are the ones peeling potatoes, making stuffing, slaving over a hot stove for hours on end in order to provide less fortunate individuals with a great meal.

Instead, politicians such as State, Town Council members, and the Town Manager come in to serve the meal and get their pictures taken and then leave after the meal is served.  The volunteers are left cleaning up and doing all the dishes.  The volunteers are the ones whose picture should be taken because they are the true heroes here.

How To Buy A Councilor, ah sorry, Congressman 101

Former lobbyist Jack Abramoff (who spent time in prison after
pleading guilty to corrupting public officials) exposed how the
U.S. government is legally corrupted.

The Young Turks Cenk Uygur breaks down clips from Abramoff's

How to buy a Congress critter...
(CBS News)

Jack Abramoff, the notorious former lobbyist at the center of Washington's biggest corruption scandal in decades, spent more than three years in prison for his crimes. Now a free man, he reveals how he was able to influence politicians and their staffers through generous gifts and job offers. He tells Lesley Stahl the reforms instituted in the wake of his scandal have had little effect.

Lisbon Is So Transparent That No One Can See Anything !

WHAT MORE CAN THEY TAKE AWAY??!!!

It is very obvious the Town of Lisbon is in a deep downward spiral.  Look on the town web site for the agenda for Tuesday’s workshop.  It is not there.  When Councilor Cote was not reelected, the town of Lisbon began its uncontested reign of terror.  There was little transparency in government before but now there is absolutely no transparency.  This standing council, headed by the Bowie, does not want the citizens to know what the council is doing.

The first indication is no agenda posted for Tuesday’s workshop.  Even through the public cannot speak at a workshop; the residents have a right to know what is being discussed.  According to Vice Chair, soon to be Chair, Pomelow the people have no rights and should be seen but never heard.  Pomelow, under the guidance of Bowie, has done everything she can to prevent the citizens from having a say on any issue brought before the council.  Look at her feeble attempt at changing the Council Working Rules.  Individuals are only allowed to speak on issues during Audience Participation.  This means speaking before the issues are explained by the sponsor.  How can anyone intelligently address an issue without understanding why or what the issue is?  This demonstrates the logic of Pomelow and this council.

Why can’t the people know and understand what is going on in their town?  Councilor Mason used to encourage residents to become more involved in what goes on in Lisbon.  Now she sits back and does what she is told by Bowie.  She is only allowed to speak on social events in the town, like a Social Director.

The people have a right under the United States and Maine Constitutions’ for a transparent government open to the public.  This is not happening in the town of Lisbon.   The people have a right to know what is being discussed at Council Meetings and Workshops.  The Agenda and all documents being utilized at meetings or workshops should be posted on the town web site enabling citizens to choose to attend for themselves or not these meetings or workshops.  As it stands right now, the residents do not have any idea what is going on.   Keeping the residents of Lisbon in the dark is the primary mission of this standing council.  This allows the council to perform underhanded dealings which cost the taxpayers large amounts of their tax dollars.  Look at 3 Village Street!!!!!!

Conflict Of Interest, Congress, America The Beautiful

Lisbon,

Last Sunday a 60-Minutes report threw a welcome spotlight on a
preposterous, long-standing situation that virtually no one openly
defends: the fact that U.S. Senators and members of the U.S. House
of Representatives can -- and do -- trade stocks on inside
information that they obtain through performing their legislative
work.

Insider trading, trading stocks based on non-public information, is
illegal.

Martha Stewart did it and went to jail for it. Recently, Joseph
"Chip" Skowron III, a Connecticut doctor was sentenced to 5 years
in prison for it.

But if you're a member of Congress it's a whole different story...

Congress trading stocks on inside information
CBS 60 Minutes

It's time to ban insider trading by Congress

Congress is finally shamed into fixing a long-standing scandal.

By Roger Parloff, senior editor

FORTUNE -- Last Sunday a 60-Minutes report threw a welcome spotlight on a preposterous, long-standing situation that virtually no one openly defends: the fact that, as a practical matter, U.S. Senators and members of the U.S. House of Representatives can -- and do -- trade stocks on inside information that they obtain through performing their legislative work.

Although many observers have decried this scandalous situation over the past decade, without having spurred Congress to surrender its sleazy perk, the well-timed 60-Minutes report, coming when Congress hit a new low in approval ratings (9%, according to a CBS News/New York Times poll) may finally shame it into plugging the loophole.

Congressmen do not literally enjoy any express "exemption" to the insider trading laws. If, for instance, a CEO tipped off a senator that the company's next earnings report would exceed expectations, and the senator traded on that information, he could go to jail, just like you or me.

The problem arises with respect to market-moving information a Congressman learns in the course of doing his legislative work. Like, say, realizing after cloakroom discussions that there are now sufficient votes to defeat a tax amendment that would have adversely affected a certain industry. Or learning from committee work that a company has won a big defense contract, though the announcement will not be made till the following Monday.

During the 60 Minutes segment, Hoover Institute fellow Peter Schweizer (author of the recent book Throw Them All Out) asserted that in mid-September 2008, Alabama representative Spencer Bachus, then the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, attended closed-door meetings at which Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke warned congressional leaders that a global financial meltdown was imminent. "Literally the next day," according to the Schweizer, Bachus bought stock options in funds that would make money if the market went down. (A Bachus staffer told 60 Minutes that Bachus never trades on non-public information and never trades in financial services stock. Since the segment aired Bachus has written the publisher of Schweizer's book, protesting: "The idea that I or anyone else needed this meeting to know our financial markets were in trouble is just laughable.")

Questionable liability

Nevertheless, the apparent informational advantage that Congressmen have over the rest of us vis-à-vis the stock market has been documented in two lengthy statistical studies led by Alan J. Ziobrowski, an economist at Georgia State University. His study of U.S. Senators, completed in 2004, concluded that their trades beat the market by 10% a year (or 85 basis points per month), at a time when average American households underperformed the market by about 1.4%. (Even corporate insiders, trading their own stock, outperformed the market by only 6%.) Ziobrowski's more recent study of members of the House, published this year, showed representatives beating the market by 6%. (Ziobrowski had corrected anticipated that Senators would outperform House members, hypothesizing that "power is more diluted in the House . . . which is likely to reduce the informational advantages of House Members and result in lower excess returns.")

Why isn't this sort of insider trading illegal? The complicated answer begins with the fact that there isn't really any "insider trading" statute to begin with. Rather, prohibitions against what we call insider trading have evolved through interpretation, by courts and the Securities and Exchange Commission, of the general main federal statute forbidding securities fraud. Those interpretations have hinged on finding that the insider trader is breaching some sort of duty to either the source of his information or to the person on the other side of his trade. For arcane reasons, it is not clear at the moment that Congressmen are breaching a sufficiently powerful or explicit duty of exactly the right kind when they engage in insider trading, even though there is no question that, for instance, their own staffers would be committing a crime if they traded on the very same information. Staffers owe a fiduciary duty to their employers, the Congressmen, not to misappropriate that information and use it for personal gain; it's not clear that Congressmen themselves have a comparable duty to anyone.

There is actually a debate within legal academia about whether Congressmen could be held liable for insider trading even as the law stands—law professor Donna Nagy of the University of Indiana has argued that they could be, while Stephen Bainbridge, a law professor at U.C.L.A., has argued that they can't—but the very fact that there is such a debate deters prosecutors from pursuing cases. Why mount an inherently shaky case against such a high-profile target? As for the SEC, wrote Bainbridge in 2009, "Any government agency is likely to be reluctant to bite the budgetary hand that feeds it."

While Congress never consciously created the cracks in the insider trading laws that its members now enjoy slipping through, they have consciously refused to seal them. Legislation has been introduced in each session of Congress since 2006 (by Louise Slaughter of New York and a handful of others), known as the STOCK Act (for "Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act"), that would solve most of the problem. But until Sunday's 60 Minutes piece, it somehow never gained any traction.

That segment, though—produced by Ira Rosen and Gabrielle Schonder and reported by Steve Kroft—seems to have finally hit a nerve. Since it aired, two Senators have introduced new versions of the STOCK Act, and the House Financial Services Committee—now chaired by Representative Bachus—has already scheduled a hearing on the House version for December 6.

Now that it's made it onto the agenda, can you seriously imagine anyone opposing it?

We Are Awesome‏!

No matter what our kids and the new generation think about us,
 WE ARE AWESOME !!!
OUR Lives are LIVING PROOF !!!

To Those of   Us  Born
1925 - 197 5  :

At the end of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno. If you don't read anything else, please
Read what he said.

Very well stated, Mr. Leno.
~~~~~~~~~
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank
While they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then, after that trauma, we were
Put to sleep on our tummies
In baby cribs covered
With bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets,
And, when we rode our bikes,
We had baseball caps,
Not helmets, on our heads.
As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes..
Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And we weren't overweight.
WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day.
--And, we were OKAY.
We would spend hours building
Our go-carts out of scraps
And then ride them down the hill,
Only to find out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem..
We did not have Play Stations, Nintendos and X-boxes. There were
No video games, no 150 channels on cable,
No video movies or DVDs,
No surround-sound or CDs,
No cell phones,
No personal computers,
No Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS
 And we went outside and found  them!
We fell out of trees, got cut,
Broke bones and teeth,
And there were no lawsuits
From those accidents.We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand, and no one would call child services to report abuse.
  We ate worms, and mud pies
Made from dirt, and
The worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and
-although we were told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.
 Little League had tryouts
 And not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn
To deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!
 The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best   risk-takers,
 Problem solvers, and inventors ever.
The past 50 to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas..
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of those born
Between 1925-1970, CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives  for our own good.
 While you are at it, forward it to your kids, so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?
~~~~~~~
The quote of the month
By
Jay Leno:

  "With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

Editor's note:
The Truth:
This was not written by either of the late night hosts but by Craig R. Smith and published on WorldNetDaily.com at Thanksgiving, 2006.   It does close with a quote from Leno that someone added and whoever forwarded this left out Craig Smith's name and thought Leno must have penned it.

At the end is the Leno quot
e, "With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, "Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"  Leno said this on The Tonight Show 2005 after a lawsuit was filed to remove references to God from the Pledge of Allegiance.

For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us...go ahead and delete this.
For the rest of us.....pass this on.

Dollar Bill Defacement!

Defacement!
These are starting to show up around the country!

A lady in Monte Vista,   Colorado was the alleged recipient of this
dollar bill. This is her story.

After dinner she took a $1 bill out of her purse and displayed it
on the table. Underneath the words "In God We Trust" someone
had stamped in bold red ink - 'NO GOD BUT ALLAH'.

When asked where she had gotten this bill she said it was part of the
change she had received at a store in Alamosa, CO.
It is essential that we nip this defacement in the bud!!!! Do not under
any circumstances accept these as valid currency!  This is absolutely
just one more sinister, underhanded attempt to undermine every shred
of sacred American heritage that remains of this country!

If, by chance you discover that you accidentally have received one of
these dollar bills in some change, it is essential that you take it to your
local bank and exchange it for one that has not been defaced.

Tell them you want these bills destroyed - NOT RECIRCULATED!

Our motto is: 'IN GOD WE TRUST'! We are not Muslims and never
will be Muslims. If Muslims want to live among us then let them learn
what true 'liberty and justice for all' really means!!!!! They have no
right to deface our money nor to try and force their warped religious
beliefs down our throats!!!!!

Allah has done nothing to liberate anyone - anywhere - at any time!!!!!
allah is NO GOD but satan IMPERSONATED!!!!! -- AND EVERY
HONEST MUSLIM (even the 'peaceful' ones) MUST ADMIT THAT
JIHAD WARFARE IS A FOUNDATIONAL TENET OF ISLAM -
WHICH WAS NOT ONLY COMMANDED BY MOHAMMED BUT IS
LIKEWISE CONDONED AND COMMANDED IN THE KORAN
ITSELF!!!!!

Just look at the hatred, murder and misery that has been caused around
the world in the name of allah!!!!! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!! THESE
PEOPLE WANT TO USURP AND DESTROY OUR FREE WAY
OF LIFE!!!!!

May God Bless what still remains of the precious freedoms that we
cherish!

Please send to everyone you know who loves 'ONE NATION, UNDER
GOD'!

GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!!

Shaking Up Maine's Media‏

November 18, 2011

Dear Friends,

There hasn’t been much good news about Maine’s media lately. Our major daily newspapers are laying off employees, readerships continue to decline, and real news about the important issues seems harder to find every day. As conservatives, we all share the frustration with Maine’s political press – but that’s all about to change. A new player is entering the Maine media market.

The Maine Heritage Policy Center is getting ready to launch our own news bureau - MainePolicyNews.com.

MainePolicyNews.com will launch in early December, and make no mistake – it will turn the current political media culture on its head. We have put together an incredible team to deliver the real stories of state policy and politics to the people of Maine. We’re featuring daily state house updates, video interviews, hard-hitting investigative reporting, along with opinion and analysis from the thought leaders and elected officials who drive the policy debate every day.

We all know Mainers want more from political news coverage. Maine has an incredibly engaged electorate – we’ve got the highest voter turnout in the nation. But newspapers in Maine are offering less and less quality coverage.

Does anyone really want to read another story about labor murals?

Of course not. We’ve got real issues that the people of our state want to read about. They want to know where their tax dollars are going. They want to know what our government officials are up to. And they want to hear the stories of the real policy decisions that will affect their lives in major ways.

And that’s exactly what MainePolicyNews.com is all about. We’re bringing the truth about policy and politics to the front page every day, we’re asking the hard questions, and we’re going to bring balance to Maine’s media.

We’re extremely excited about this project, and we’ll keep you posted as we get closer to our launch date. In the meantime, you can sign up for email alerts at MainePolicyNews.com, and make sure to ‘like’ us on Facebook.

Maine’s media will be changing in a major way next month – so stay tuned!

Sincerely,
Lance Dutson
Chief Executive Officer
