Memorial Day 2015: Why It Matters

Archivist Rod Ross brings meaning to the intention of the founder of Memorial Day, John A. Logan, whose 1868 proclamation led to today’s holiday. In doing so, he traces his own life’s trajectory from a 1950s grade school student to an archivist bringing meaning to a soldier’s name at the base of a Batavia, Illinois, Civil War statue, thanks to a historical record from the National Archives in Washington, DC. In this season of sesquicentennial Civil War observances, as we pause for Memorial Day, it is fitting that we remember those who gave their lives for the preservation of the Union and in the process helped free the slaves.

THE OBLIGATIONS OF AN ELECTED OFFICIAL!

This weekend is a great opportunity to review and reflect what exactly the obligation of our elected officials are.  In this country, our elected individuals are selected from the people, by the people and for the people to represent the people in local, state and federal government.  These elected officials are the voice of the people and as such have an obligation to comply with the desires and wishes of the people.

In November 2011, the former Town Council played a nasty trick on the residents of this community.  The Town Council offered to put a referendum question on the ballot on whether or not the people could vote on the Municipal budget.  The people believed that the Council would honor their desires based on the results. 

 Unfortunately a few of the Councilors, Michael Bowie, and Fern LaRochelle, to name a couple decided that the referendum question was not binding and therefore the Council did not have to comply with the results.  The results were over 2,000 citizens were in favor and only a little over 500 were not.  Since this time, no Council has honored these results.

At a Public Hearing on the Municipal budget a few years ago, the people spoke out against a pay raise for the town employees.  The majority of the people who spoke at the Public Hearing were against this action.  However, it made no difference because Chairman Lisa Ward went ahead and pushed the pay raise through resulting in a tax increase.

Now, there was another Public Hearing on the School Department budget held recently.  Once again, the majority of people spoke out in favor of the School Department budget as is.   The Council voted not to accept the School Department budget as is but to cut the budget.  Councilors Mark Lunt and Gregg Garrison voted with the people against cutting the School Department budget.

It is unbelievable that Councilors, once elected, forget about the people they represent and march to a different drum such as special interest groups.  Above are three cases, in which, the people clearly spoke as to their desires and wishes and were totally ignored by their elected officials.  The PRIMARY OBLIGATION of an elected official is to the people.  Once elected, these individuals represent the people who put them there and are obligated to comply with their desires and wishes.

This continued disregard for the desires and wishes of the people is disgraceful and weakens our form of government that so many have sacrificed so much to preserve.

Why do you think no one comes to Town Council meetings?  It is because regardless of what they say it is ignored by the Council.  So why waste the time?

Our Councilors need to take a serious look at what is their agenda and where their obligation lies and decide which is right.

[Watch] Released Emails Prove Hillary Responsible for Murder of Americans in Benghazi

The 2015 Southern Republican Leadership Conference in Oklahoma, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush, John Bolton, said former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is “responsible for the tragedy of the murder of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans,” in the 2012 terror attack in Benghazi Libya.

Bolton said, “I think the most telling information that we have seen in this limited number of emails is that there are repeated examples of Secretary of State Clinton being told in 2011 and 2012 that the security situation of our personnel in Tripoli and Benghazi was very precarious. The country’s government had fallen apart—that the threat from terrorist attacks was high and that our people were very concerned about it.”

He continued, “Now you’ll recall in her limited public appearances to date that she has said, you know, I don’t get involved in that security stuff, you know, I have people that do that. Well I have to say when I heard that I was stunned. I’ve worked for six different secretaries of state, everyone of them coming from very different backgrounds, every one of them cared about the safety of the Americans who worked for them in the State Department. And not one of them would have missed the danger that our diplomats in Libya faced. And this was called to her attention repeatedly and she didn’t do anything about it. So When we ask the question, who is responsible for the tragedy of the murder of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi, there is a very clear answer. It was Hillary Clinton.”

CAIR Doesn’t Think Our US Military Should Be honored on Memorial Day

While the rest of the country was recalling its fallen troops, two prominent CAIR officials questioned whether they deserved to be honored.Virtually all Americans come together on Memorial Day to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s freedom and safety. Two Council on American-Islamic Relations’ officials spent the holiday weekend differently: Questioning whether U.S. troops deserve to be honored and tweeting that the country was  “established upon white supremacy.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a group labeled by the Justice Department as a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood entity and unindicted co-conspirator in a terrorism-financing trial, disingenuously claims that it is a moderate organization.

GOPDD:11-Year-Old Boy Held Salute For One Hour On This Beach. Who Joins Him At 5:02? Beautiful!

In June 2014, an 11-year-old boy visited Normandy, France for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. As part of the boy’s personal project, titled “Project Vigil,” this little boy spent four days teaching visitors and tourists about three paratroopers who had been buried in the American Cemetery.

During the official D-Day celebration, local police didn’t allow the boy to enter the cemetery in his WWII-style uniform. So the boy took his American flag down to Omaha Beach and planted it in the sand. Staring out at the ocean, the little boy wanted to thank all the Americans who died 70 years earlier in the fight against fascism and evil.

As the young boy struggled to hold the flag steady in the forceful wind, he suddenly witnessed a vision of American infantry soldiers heading bravely towards their fate on the morning of June 6, 1944. Gazing across the English Channel, and so moved by this vision, he brought up his hand to salute the past.

Security cameras installed in a residential garage recently captured an attempted robbery that ended badly for one of the thugs involved.

According to media coverage near the Uberlândia, Brazil, neighborhood in which the ordeal took place, three men followed their victims as they returned home, entering through the garage. The male resident, still in his car as he noticed the trio approaching, pulled out his gun and opened the door firing. For the lead intruder, the encounter proved deadly.

Clashdaly: WHITE FEMALE COP KILLED BY BLACK THUG: Please Note That NO RIOTS Ensued

The officer was shot one day before welcoming home her pre-mature daughter from the hospital.

A suspect being sought by police for an Omaha shooting opened fire Wednesday on officers, prompting police to return gunfire in a shootout that left a 29-year-old detective and the suspect dead.

Officer Kerrie Orozco died at Creighton University Medical Center shortly after the 1pm gun battle, Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said at a hospital news conference.

Schmaderer said the suspect, 26-year-old Marcus Wheeler, also passed away at the hospital.

Orozco was part of a fugitive task force looking for Wheeler to serve a felony arrest warrant. Wheeler, who was wanted on a warrant charging him in a previous shooting, opened fire on the officers as they approached him.

A semi-automatic handgun was also found on Wheeler, Schmaderer said. ‘Mr. Wheeler is a convicted felon and a known gang member,’ he said.

Orozco was a seven-year veteran of the department and worked in its gang unit, Schmaderer said. She was also a new mother with a premature baby, Olivia Ruth, who is in an Omaha hospital.

‘The (baby) is set to be released from the hospital tomorrow,’ Schmaderer said, his voice breaking.

RECAP TOWN COUNCIL MEETING - MAY 19TH

Recap of Lisbon Town Council Meeting 5/19

There were approximate 200 Lisbon Residents at last nights Town Council Meeting, most of whom were there to support the School and the Schools proposed new budget.

Dozens of students along with numerous teachers, parents and residents took to the podium to urge the Council to approve the proposed school budget.  While most speakers were civil a few did resort to name calling. One gentleman said " Don't send a boy to do a mans job", while looking directly at the Council Chair.  Several other people threatened the Councilors with recall or voting them out of office.  Almost all in attendance were very pro School budget.

After a couple hours of taking comments from the public the Council voted down the Schools proposed budget. The vote was 5 to 2 with Councilors Lunt and Garrison  voting to pass the budget. The Council was adamant that they didn't want to use over $300,000 dollars of excess gym bond money toward the budget. The Council also reduced by two thirds the amount of money the school wanted to use from the capital account.

This raises the question ...will the School Board have enough time to bring another budget before the Council before the June election?  If not it will cost the town approximately $3,000  for a new election.

Sheriff Paul Babeu: ‘Obama Doesn’t Think Illegals Who Commit Violent Crimes Should Be Deported’

Pinal County, AZ Sheriff Paul Babeu (R) declared “the president doesn’t agree with us” that illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes should be deported on Tuesday’s “Your World with Neil Cavuto” on the Fox News Channel.

Babeu initially criticized the recommendations of the police task force regarding immigration enforcement, saying they are “are the finishing touches to President Obama’s no enforcement of the law when it comes to immigration because the majority of law enforcement are us, local, county, state, law enforcement, and of course, we’re going to run in to the criminals. And when they’re arrested, guess what? They come to our jails. So, this report actually says and recommends that they — the word they use is ‘decouple’ the relationship with the federal agents of ICE and Homeland Security with those of us in local, county, state law enforcement saying that we should not — not only work in cooperation when it comes to when we detain an illegal, or even for notifications saying to them ‘hey, we’ve got this illegal, here you may want to check him out,’ or the transfer of that illegal to their custody. And so, it further undermines the rule of law and it completely guts any effort to have consequences for breaking immigration law at all.”

[Warning Graphic Video] A Group Of Thugs Brutally Beat A 15 Year Old Boy And Robbed Of Him Of His Pants, Shoes And Cellphone On Subway In Brooklyn

A 15-year-old boy riding a train though Brooklyn was beaten and robbed of his cellphone, shoes and even his pants during a shocking gang attack caught on video. 

Up to five teens pounced on the 15-year-old victim after he got onto the Canarsie-bound L train at the Broadway Junction station in East New York about 3:30 p.m. Friday, cops said.

The teen tried to flee the train at the next stop — the Atlantic Ave./Snediker Ave. station — but his attackers grabbed him on the platform, taking his shoes, pants and cellphone, police said.
A startling cellphone video taken during the brawl shows the teens beating their victim, then dragging the pantless teen back onto the train, where stunned straphangers called 911.
The lanky teen was sprawled out in his underwear on the subway car floor as concerned commuters tried to console him and give him water, the video shows.
Paramedics took the victim to Brookdale University Hospital with injuries to his head and body, officials said.
Cops were looking for the assailants Saturday.
Brooklyn community advocate Tony Herbert said the attack occurred when two gangs clashed.

Lisbon HS Construction Tour‏

Touring LHS Construction Site

    

Lisbon - Jobs For Maine’s Graduates and other Lisbon High School students participated in a guided tour on Thursday, May 14^th of the new gym’s construction site at 2 Sugg Drive in Lisbon Falls.   Students were guided through the many working pieces of a project.  

Denis Landry and Scott Cristina of Landry and French Construction shared why many skills are needed in the construction field. Landry told students that when hiring potential employees he is most concerned with attitude, work ethic and the ability to work as a team member. Emphasis was also put on the job market as many jobs like masonry, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing are in high demand as the baby boomer generation retires. 

Learning a skill and understanding how to problem solve can get you far in this vast and growing industry. Landry also mentioned about the enormous change in technology within the field. Many aspects of the field have a technological component to them. Surveying with GPS, structural engineering, supervision and site inspection all require technological skills. Cristina also pointed out that many women are in the field as project managers, engineers, welders, and electricians.

NOW IS THE TIME!!!

Now is the time for all residents of our community to get involved before it is too late.  This coming Tuesday night, the Town Council is going to vote on allowing the School Board to utilize their Capital Reserve Fund; Article 21 School Warrant Article; 2015-2016 School Budget Warrant Articles and finally School Budget Validation Referendum.  So what does this mean to you?  The Town Council directed the School Board to cut $600,000.00 from their budget and the School Board is short approximately $44,000.00.  However, without the use of the Capital Reserve and the Bond Proceeds it will be a lot more than $44,000.00 short.

The School Board came in “flat” which means that they did not need any additional local revenue to make their budget.  This means no tax increase because of the School Department.  However, the Town Council did not believe it was legal to use the Capital Reserve Fund and the Bond Proceeds and so they challenged it.  After many emails and legal reviews (at a very expensive price tag) it was determined that the use of both the Capital Reserve Fund and Bond Proceeds are perfectly legal.  There is, however, a catch to using the Bond Proceed prior to the project being completed.  If the project runs over budget, the Town would have to use our Undesignated Fund to cover the cost.  I do not believe this for a minute.  The additional funds would have to come out of the School Department and Mr. Green has already addressed this issue by stating there are funds to prevent this from happening.

Since all legal issues have been resolved and the risk of using Bond Proceeds prior to completion of the project has been mitigated there should be no objection to the School Department’s budget.  Unfortunately, the Town Council on Tuesday night will probably vote down the School Department’s budget and require additional cuts is made.  These cuts could come from sports, eliminating one or more nurses, and some other areas that would be detrimental to our students.  There should be no reason for this to occur since the School Department’s budget does not require any additional local funds (a raise in our taxes).

The Town Council has to approve the School Department’s budget before it can be place on the ballot for the people to vote on it.
