Local Firefighters Busy During Weekend Snowstorm

Lisbon Firefighters were kept busy over the past weekend responding to 25 calls for assistance. While snow was coming down fast and furious, members volunteered their time to staff the stations. This proved to be very beneficial as the department handled many calls at the same time. Members of the two fire companies staffed Engine Companies 1 and 7, Ladder Truck 6, and Rescue 10 during the snow event. The department responded to multiple wires down calls, several ambulance assist calls, and at least two working fires.

At 2 a.m. on Monday morning, the Lisbon Falls Fire Company was alerted to a motor vehicle fire at the intersection of Wing Street. and Spear Street. Upon arrival of Engine Company 7 the vehicle was heavily involved in fire. While attacking the fire an explosion occurred, as a result of a magnesium engine block. The resulting explosion required the response of Ladder Truck 6 and Rescue 10. The fire was quickly contained by the members and no additional damages occurred to the surrounding homes.

On Monday February 23 at approximately 6pm, the department was alerted for the house fire on Anthony Street. Two minutes after the alarm was sounded, Deputy Chief Michael Robitaille of the Lisbon Falls Fire Company, struck the first alarm for the working fire. Fire was visible in one room of the residence. Upon arrival of Ladder Truck 6, a primary search of the residence was conducted, the window of the fire room was broken for ventilation and the fire was contained. Engine Company 2 was the second unit on the scene and provided water and the backup line. Engine Company 7 arrived and provided escape ladders and lighting for the interior crews. Engine Company 1 arrived and was busy shoveling out the buried hydrants in case the fire spread. Rescue 10 arrived and provided firefighter rehab and breathing air for breathing apparatus. Due to the fast work of the initial crews, Fire Command cancelled the mutual aid from Topsham and Lewiston. Durham Fire filled in at the Lisbon Falls Fire Station and units cleared the scene at 8pm.
