MAINE HS RACEWALKERS CAPTURE 7 ALL-AMERICAN AWARDS
Nine Maine high school racewalkers ventured south to Boston and then on to NYC this weekend to race in the Nike Indoor Nationals and the National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships.
On Saturday Auburn freshman Abby Dunn walked a fabulous personal record time for the one-mile race of 8:01.68 to capture 6th place and her first all-American award in track and field. Lewiston freshman Nicole Court-Menendez also walked an excellent personal record time of 8:25.77. Auburn junior Christie Bernier, who won this event in 2007, had to settle for 14th place in 8:32.58, and Mt. Blue sophomore Emily Reed finished in 18th place in 9:00.97.
On Sunday in NYC Abby Dunn won her heat in a new personal best time of 7:55.98, but unfortunately was in the slower heat of the 36 walkers entered into the competition and finished 9th overall. Chances are very good that Dunn would have medaled if she had been in the faster heat since she walked away from the field she was entered in and lapped many of the walkers. Christie Bernier finished 16th in 8:13.86, Nicole Court-Menendez was 21st in 8:27.83, and Emily Reed was 28th in 9:02.41
On Saturday in the Boys race, Boothbay Junior Matt Forgues, a member of the USA Junior National Track Team, finished 3rd in 7:09.98, Lisbon's senior Tyler Campbell was 5th in 7:15.34, and Maranacook sophomore Evan Vincent was 6th in a personal record time of 7:34.28. All three boys earned all-American awards. Falmouth junior Charlie Swerdlow finished 8th in 8:06.46, and Mt. Blue sophomore Fairfield Bonsall did not start due to injury.
On Sunday Matt Forgues did not race in anticipation of a major race in Texas in just a few weeks. Tyler campbell came in 4th, Evan Vincent in 5th, and Charlie Swerdlow in 6th to be the first Falmouth racewalker ever to ever earn an all-American Track and Field award.
By all measures the weekend was very successful for Maine with a grand total of 7 all-American Track and Field award winners.
