A Thank You To Some Great Lisbon Community Volunteers

Submitted by Faye Brown

Many thanks to the 2009 Green Thumb Gang volunteer!

Our 13th season of planting and maintaining garden spots around the town was a challenging one- relentless rain in the Spring, reconstruction of roads, then weeks in late summer with no rain! Call Faye at 353-2728 for information about volunteering in 2010.

Before thanking our volunteers, I would like to express a huge appreciation to two landscaping businesses for taking over three major gardens and all related costs for this season. Pine Knoll has created beautiful gardens and planters at the Topsham line ‘Welcome to Lisbon’ sign and also in the front of the MTM Center. In addition to the beautiful donations to the town, the gardens at their business location on Lisbon Road and the Lisbon Credit Union are magnificent additions to our town landscapes.

Riverbend Landscaping of Durham has created several lovely gardens at the Durham ‘Welcome to Lisbon’ sign. If you were fortunate to see the gardens at their nicest , that is to say, before the resident woodchuck ate them down to nubs, they were lovely. Owner James Herling invested a lot trying to find something that our ‘friend’ might pass up, but it was another tough year for Riverbend, and another tasty year for Chuckie. Thank you for all your efforts, James, and despite the pest, it still looked very nice and maintained.

Thanks to our Green Thumb Gang 2009 Volunteers.

Question:
What is your opinion of President Obama’s Health Care Reform?
Response:

Kayla Yates, Junior
I think the Health Reform is a bad idea because you’ll have health care but you will be paying more in taxes.

Shauna Riordan, Junior
The Health Care Reform is a bad idea all together. “Free health care” isn’t free. The government does not need to control everything!!!

Jeremy Weddle, Sophomore
I think the Health Care Reform is a bad idea because I want to earn coverage by working.

A Local Citizen Writes to the AARP and shares their reply

Subj: Re: AARP
Dear Andy Riordan:

Thank you for contacting AARP to express your interest on the issue
of Health Care Reform. AARP values the opinions shared by our
members. Your feedback helps shape our position on this issue.

Please note that we have not yet endorsed any comprehensive health
care reform bill. AARP is fighting for a solution that improves
health care for all our members. We have been working with leaders
from both sides of the aisle for many, many months, and we will
continue to do so. We know that the final package will include a mix
of ideas from both parties and both houses of Congress.

For more than 50 years, we've been fighting on behalf of older
Americans and we don't intend to stop now. We will continue to
challenge misinformation and distortion. We urge you to get the facts
about health reform and learn about the latest myths and scare
tactics. For more information, go to www.aarp.org/getthefacts.

Subj: AARP and Seniors

It appears that your paper is pro-Obama;however, the information coming out from AARP first endorsed Obama's plan, which called for a substantial reduction from Medicare in the Billions then they claimed on a radio spot yesterday, after a loss of 60,000 members, they were not going to.

I wrote to them to thank them and then, in the mail today, was a very impressive infomercial card stating certain myths and facts about the Health Reform.

They claim that:

Fact: Reform will not hurt Medicare.

Fact: Reform will not mean life/death involvement of the Gov't.

Fact: Rationed care will not happen.

The real fact is just the opposite.

There are still many different plans and many include the above which AARP claims are myths. AARP has 40,000,000 seniors and their votes have been just about promised to Obama. Let the Seniors decide and publish this for the sake of all the seniors in our area.

Dave Pelletier is a 51 year old man from Auburn who, in April of 2009, was diagnosed with bone cancer in his leg that has metastasized to other parts of his body. His particular type of cancer requires that he receive his treatment at Mass General Hospital in Boston, MA. He and his wife Nancy have been traveling back and forth since April for the monthly, week-long treatments.

A benefit is being held at the Elks Lodge located at 1675 Lisbon Street in Lewiston on October 9th at 5:00 p.m. There will be a spaghetti supper from 5-7 p.m., 50/50 and raffles. Dave is a local musician and has been a member of several bands over the past 30 years, including Roadhouse, Care, Montana, Stagecoach and is currently the keyboard player for ForeFront, so the benefit would not be complete without entertainment. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and participate in an open jam to start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 and may be purchased in advance or at the door.

Dave is no longer able to work so all proceeds will be presented to Dave and Nancy to help with traveling costs, medical bills and with their monthly financial obligations. All donations (cash or raffle item) are greatly appreciated to help make this benefit a success. All checks may be made out to BENEFIT FOR DAVID PELLETIER.

For more information please contact Julie Plourde at 207-576-6443. Checks can be mailed to Julie Plourde, c/o The Echo Group, PO Box 1328, Auburn, ME 04211-1328.

Thank You.

Lisbon High School Ice Hockey Team‏

To the Citizens of Maine, Representatives of the MPA and Athletic Supporters,

I am writing to you in an effort to bring attention to the plight of the Lisbon High School Ice Hockey Team. My son, Justin, is a sophomore at Lisbon High School and a member of this team. Historically the LHS Ice Hockey Team has struggled financially to survive. However this year a lack of participation has brought it to the brink of extinction.

In July a request was submitted to the Maine Principal’s Association to consolidate the LHS and Oak Hill Ice Hockey Teams with Mt. Ararat’s Ice Hockey Team. We recently received notification that our request was denied. The MPA indicated that by combining the teams a “Super School” would be created. The MPA has further stated that had our request been submitted prior to a May 1st deadline the “Super School” issue could have been overlooked.

The Lisbon High School Administration underwent significant changes in the past year. Addressing this issue was not the priority that perhaps it should have been to those in a position to take the necessary steps. For this lack of action, nine athletes will not be able to play ice hockey this year. Worse yet, due to the fact that there will not be a team this year funding for next year is likely to be cut.

As atheletes, parents, and a community we are outraged at the lack of support the MPA has demonstrated to its mission to promote interscholastic activities. Our athletes have demonstrated greater commitment through their fund raising efforts and participation in summer hockey leagues to maintain and improve their skills.

In summary, I ask you and ask that you ask the MPA and your readership this: If the “Super School” issue can be overlooked than why not overlook it?” Certainly, one could answer with the fact that the request was not submitted in a timely manner. However, when extenuating circumstances exist and something greater is at risk do we adhere to rules for the sake of rules or do we move in the direction that promotes and encourages our athlete’s and do what’s right for kids? After all, isn’t this our primary purpose and goal?

I am hopeful that you will be able to support our efforts to have the MPA reconsider their decision.

Hoping for your support,

Pamela Grant

In General Politicos Should Read Not React

LEVESQUE FOR CONGRESS

P.O. BOX 1387
Auburn, ME 04211
AUBURN, ME – Jason J. Levesque, Republican candidate in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, called on Rep. Mike Michaud to sign onto the discharge petition which would allow a vote on the “Read the Bill” Resolution (H.R. 554).
“It’s time for Rep. Michaud to put his money where his mouth is and sign onto the discharge petition to get this bill out of committee,” said Levesque. “It seems obvious to me that a Congressman should read a bill before voting on it. Furthermore, the public has a right to see legislation before Congress votes. Not only is this good government, but it’s also common-sense. ”
Mike Michaud is one of the co-sponsors of the resolution that would amend the rules of the House of Representatives to require that non-emergency legislation and conference reports be available on the Internet for 72 hours before consideration by the House. However this bill has been stalled in committee since June and Speaker Nancy Pelosi won’t allow it to come out for vote.
Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) and Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) have filed a discharge petition to get it out of committee and, if the petition is signed by a majority of members, it can be voted on by the full House over the objections of Speaker Pelosi. Mike Michaud has not signed the discharge petition, although 158 House members from both parties have signed it.
America depends on active citizen participation. But Mike Michaud proved last July that he does not want greater transparency in government when he pleaded with his colleagues to cancel August recess to ram through a health care bill. When he failed, he refused to give his constituents an opportunity to be heard,” Levesque said.
Mike Michaud voted for the stimulus bill only 12 hours after it was given to him without time to read the details and he supported the job-killing Cap & Trade bill only 16 hours after a rewrite was introduced without time to read the details.
“Obviously Rep. Michaud only signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill to get political cover. He doesn’t want this to actually become law, or he would have signed the discharge petition. His actions speak louder than words,” concluded Levesque.
