Levesque And Michaud Face Off In First Debate

LEVESQUE AND MICHAUD FACE OFF IN FIRST DEBATE

Auburn, Maine – The Congressional Candidates for Maine’s 2nd District faced off for the first time this evening at Maine Public Broadcasting Network’s Lewiston studios. Challenger Jason Levesque and incumbent Mike Michaud showed how far they differ from each other on the major issues today including Health Care, Stimulus, Cap and Trade, Spending and How to Bring Jobs to Maine.

Debate Highlights:

On Social Security:

Still no answer from the Congressman.

Congressman, what will you do to make Social Security solvent? Jason has a plan. Your option of “status quo or say no,” won’t fix the problem.

On Health Care:

According to Mike: Parts are good, parts are bad. Some bad enough he’s now submitting legislation to repeal the parts of it he doesn’t like, but that he voted for.

“If you read it, why didn’t you catch that bad parts before you voted for it? Or is settling for mediocrity now the American way?”—Jason Levesque

On being a Blue Dog Democrat:

Mike Michaud: “Gotta live within your budget”

He voted to increase the debt ceiling by $2 Trillion dollars, to $14 Trillion. This is debt spending. How is that living within your budget?

On the Deficit:

Mike Michaud: “We need to hold down the deficit.”

We want to hold the deficit where it is? Jason doesn’t want to hold it where it is, he wants to cut it. Mike Michaud has voted for massive spending measures including the failed stimulus, the health care takeover, the cap and trade energy tax and the auto bail out.

On Afghanistan:

According to Mike: Osama Bin Laden is in Pakistan not Afghanistan. “We’ve completed our mission.”

“Our mission was to make him move?” – Jason Levesque

The entire debate can be seen again MPBN in the coming days. Check out www.mpbn for schedule.

The Analysis Of Current Gobernatorial Media Ads

Host Erick Bennett analyzes Libby Mitchell's education ad on today's episode of the Pulse of Maine.

I love this Doctor.....

Make sure you look at the Doctor so you get the proper enunciation.

I love this Doctor.....

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Heart only good for so many beats, and that it.... Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speed up heart not make live longer; that like say you can extend life of car by driving faster. Want live longer? Take nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does cow eat? Hay and corn. What are these? Vegetables. So, steak nothing more than efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef also good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And pork chop can give 100% recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine. That means they take water out of fruity bit; get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made out of grain.. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: If you have body and you have fat, ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Cannot think of single one, sorry. My philosophy: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU NOT LISTENING!!! .... Foods fried in vegetable oil. How getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only do sit-ups if want bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: You crazy? HELLO… Cocoa beans! Vegetable!!! Cocoa beans best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming good for figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.
AND.....
For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies:
1. The Japanese eat very little fat
And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat
And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine
And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine
And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats
And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION
Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Word Of The Day: Austerity

2.
Usually, austerities. ascetic practices: austerities of monastery life.

Take the time to watch this explanation of Austerity and how it relates to us in everyday life.  If you have to watch it more then once to fully understand.

With governments formulating policies of austerity as the global economic crisis recedes, a new animated video short describes the thinking behind such policies as inherently flawed. Austerity features Faculty Fellow Mark Blyth, an international political economist whose views are captured by director Joe Posner ‘07.

Austerity is the first in a new media series being produced at the Watson Institute.

“In keeping with the Institute’s mission of producing research that addresses global problems, we want to make sure that we disseminate our findings in ways that can be well understood by people outside academic life,” according to Institute Deputy Director Geoffrey S. Kirkman ‘91. “We have launched this new series seeking to translate our faculty's ideas in media-friendly ways. “

Another Bath Built Ship To Be Honored

Memory of Marine reborn in Navy ship

A newly minted Navy warship honoring a New York Marine's 2004 sacrifice is headed for South Florida and 10 days of celebrations capped by a Nov. 13 commissioning ceremony.

crosenberg@MiamiHerald.com

Cpl. Jason Dunham saved the lives of two buddies but would die of his wounds days later.
Now, the 22-year-old Marine's sacrifice is being immortalized.
A warship bearing his name sailed from the General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Maine on Wednesday morning, the start of a nearly monthlong training cruise down the East Coast ahead of a 10-day visit to South Florida.

What: Commissioning of the USS Jason Dunham, or the U.S. Navy's Destroyer No. 109
When: Nov. 13
Where: Port Everglades
Admission: Free and open to the public. But an invitation is required to attend the event, which will accommodate some 3,000 guests plus the families of the ship's 250-plus sailors.

Happy Birthday To Our Navy!!!

Chairman’s Corner: Happy Birthday Navy – October 13, 2010

By Admiral Mike Mullen
Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff

WASHINGTON - Two hundred and thirty five years ago, Continental Congress passed legislation to fit out “two swift sailing vessels” with ten guns and eighty crewmen creating the humble beginnings to what would become the United States Navy.  We celebrate this day as the Navy’s Birthday every year, honoring a tremendous legacy of service, sacrifice and presence around the globe.
Today, our Sailors are adding their own chapter to the Navy’s storied heritage.  From Haiti to the Gulf of Guinea, from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf Shore, they stand as a global force for good in every sense.  And while the Navy’s core values remain Honor, Courage, and Commitment – their versatility and adaptability during these challenging times are also long-cherished Navy hallmarks.

We see this every day not only in the ships, submarines and aircraft underway conducting a wide array of missions including missile defense, anti-piracy efforts, and humanitarian relief, but just as significantly, in the more than 10,000 Sailors who serve on the ground in countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq.  Their actions profoundly demonstrate that there are times when we defend our national interests best when we help others defend theirs.
Of course, these remarkable efforts would not be possible without the steadfast love and support of our Navy families – I share from personal experience that the Service and our Nation are deeply blessed by their contributions as well.
On behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, I congratulate our Sailors and civilians, our proud Navy veterans and our wonderful families on this special day.  Happy Birthday, Shipmates!
- Adm. Mike Mullen

Breast cancer breakthrough: watercress turns off signal that causes tumors to develop

Wednesday, October 13, 2010 by: S. L. Baker, features writer

(NaturalNews) As a cancerous tumor develops, it quickly outgrows its existing blood supply. So a protein called Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF) is released that sends out signals causing surrounding normal tissues to grow new blood vessels into the tumor -- and that provides the cancer with oxygen and nutrients. This plays a critical role in the development and spread of breast and other cancers. But now comes word from University of Southampton researchers in the United Kingdom that they've discovered something which interferes with and actually "turns off" the ability of HIF to function -- a natural plant compound dubbed phenylethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) found in the herb watercress.

P. W. Sugg Girls Soccer Results (10/12/10)‏‏

On Tuesday 10/12, Lisbon Sugg middle school girls’ soccer played at home and tied 1-1 against Winthrop. Greyhounds dominated the possession of the ball almost the whole game, scored their goal in the first half, and suffered a goal in the second half.

Greyhounds’ defensive line played solid and confident, including Center Back Keyanna Barry, Left Fullback Mikayla Yanez, and Right Fullback Taylor Feehan. Sweeper and Captain Kailyn Hill played a fantastic game, getting several balls out of the defense. Middle fielders did an excellent job by using every throw in to keep Lisbon in attack, including Left Midfielder Abby Gamache and Right Midfielder Drew Stewart-Staples.

Offensive line showed great improvement by playing closer to each other and making several wall and square passes Left Forward Katheren George, Center Forward Ashley Conrad and Right Forward Loren Grant. Greyhounds’ striker Ashley Conrad with technique and precision put the ball in the opponent’s net by kicking a cross ball from the penalty mark to the left of the goalie. Right Forward Loren Grant’s performance was marked by hustle today. Loren ran the whole game and fought for every ball in the attack.

Lisbon Sugg middle school girls’ next game is Thursday, 10/14 at 3:30 pm, at home against Gardner.

P. W. Sugg Boys Soccer Results (10/12/10)‏

Sugg's Greyhounds enjoyed their second win this season in a close
match against Winthrop. The 2-1 score favoring the Greyhounds was made
possible by the hard working team members like Lawrence St. Amant who
displayed unprecedented aggressiveness in the game's 1st half and
excellent stops by both keepers, especially one critical save by
Jordan Cole during a tense Winthrop break-away in the 2nd half. The
winning goal was attributed to the undying efforts of the team with
Eric Kane making the last shot for the win. The Greyhounds next face
Gardner in another home game Thursday as they look to add another win
to their 2-4 season record.

A Good Ole Maine RedNeck Wedding,, YaHoo!!!

Couple Gets Married Redneck Style

Trenton - Melissa Emery arrived at her wedding in style, just like any redneck woman would, in the back seat of a pick up.

"There was a down home redneck wedding," said Bonnie Campbell, the mother of the bride.

It all started out with just a camo theme, but it quickly turned into a good old redneck hitchin'.

" We have a toilet for a punch bowl, we put plungers on the tables with toilet paper and paper towels," described Melissa Emery.

THE VOICE OF REASON

THE VOICE OF REASON

Once again, Todd Comber is the voice of reason. His article on using the Ethics Committee hit the proverbial nail on the head.
Town council established an Ethics Committee as required by the Town of Lisbon Town Charter. It should be utilized.       More on that at another time.

There are altogether too few ‘voices of reason’ in government, be it local, State or Federal.

Wonder why? We all need to look to ourselves. When we read in the newspapers, or hear on the radio or television of things that are wrong, do we get involved? Do we write letters or call our elected officials? Or do we sit back and say to ourselves “What can I do? I’m just one person. Who will listen?” If 1, 10, 100 or 1,000 do it, than you are not “just one”. You are one of many. And that is how things get changed. That is how YOU can make a difference.

This does work. How?

On the local level, go to meetings, town council and school committee. Can’t hear the ones speaking? Call Town Manager Eldridge. I have asked members of the council and Eldridge countless times to speak up so they can be heard, both at the meeting and on TV. Short memories or don’t want you to hear what is being said?

If not able, watch meetings on television. All meetings are televised, or are supposed to be. If a meeting is not on TV, call Town Manager Eldridge and ask why it isn’t.

On the Federal level, names with addresses, phone numbers, both local and Washington, and e-mail addresses are published in local newspapers.

Question your elected and appointed officials. Again and again if necessary.

GET INVOLVED! I cannot say it often enough.

Todd Comber is a voice of one, but think about the many he has reached through The Lisbon Reporter.

Agree with him or not, your thoughts and opinions will always be published.

Thank You Todd for all your hard work. For persevering through good and not so good. Despite criticism and sometimes-downright hostility.

Keep up the good work Todd. I am one of many that appreciate you and all you have done, and are doing.

Dot Fitzgerald Reply to Andy Riordan‏

One thing is for sure when you read the Lisbon Reporter, you're going to find Dot Fitzgerald there somewhere. She has no idea what my problem is with the Water Dept but as usual, she spouts off.  Sorry Dot, I've known Bill Bauer for at least 30 years, not as long as you since your older, he's also a brother Mason, which is supposed to mean something,  My particular problem was agreed to be one ,by the Town Manager, who I know you love, also, the big Dept. that takes care of the whole town, Public Works, who does a tremendous job, offered to me, to take care of the minor problem that Bill Bauer wouldn't, unless I presented it before a public meeting.  I thanked the Public Works through their secretary and took care of it. myself. Cost me $30.00  but a lot of pain on my 74 year old back.

Attys: Michelle and Barack Obama‏

This is very interesting. Before debating, anyone can write to the:"Illinois Attorney registration & Disciplinary Committee"[iardc.org]  We have been told, both Obama's  are Lawyers and that Barack was a Constitutional Law Professor at the University of Chicago.   Reportedly , he was only a part time Professor, certainly not any kind of expert in Constitutional  Law.  Both Obama's  surrendered their licenses in Chicago, Barack under a threat of suspension for falsifying his bar application and by surrendering his license, avoided suspension. Michelle also was facing a suspension.  Perhaps this is why, when referencing the Constitution Obama omits references to God  and in his State of the Union address and other times, changes a few words to suit himself and his followers.  I have other sources that were provided but are quite long and will send to anyone that asks.

Lisbon, Why Don't You Use Your Ethics Panel?

By Todd Comber

At this time of despair with your local form of government and their recent actions or lack of actions;
  • 1. the convoluted management of your town by manager Stephen Eldridge
  • 2. the disdain actions by Chief of Police David T. Brooks
  • 3. the community wide implications of what amounts to nothing more   than   'piss-poor' management by Town Government
  • 4. the immoral actions of current Town Council Chair Mike Bowie
Why don't you use what we, as the Lisbon Concerned Citizens, gave life to, the Ethics Panel?

Let this governing body of residents hear all the pertinent information that should be made public and render the course of action that best suits the great people of Lisbon.  You have elected people to represent you on the Town Council that have also failed you because of their own self interests and unethical behavior.  Some like councilor Dale Crafts flip flops around the issues more than a fish out of water and avoids the responsibility to vote on issues that are controversial.  The self serving interests of some councilors has run your ship aground and though they are trying to get it back into the channel for safe passage,  remember, they themselves collectively are responsible for putting you there.

The Ethics Panel should be allowed to handle such issues as presented recently and discussed at every cup of coffee in town, and formulate a plan of action to resolve the present problematic issues.  By doing so, would put your ship on the right course for a successful voyage into the troubled economic times that lay ahead of us all.  You have appointed some very good people to this panel and have only used them once.  They were used to render a decision on then newly elected Roger Cote's actions, and deemed that he had done nothing wrong as a councilor.   He was quickly brought in front of the Ethics Panel by a unanimous vote of the Town Councilors.   Just click on the Ethics archive here on the Lisbon Reporter for more clarification of that one.

The time is right for this to happen now, but you as citizens have the duty to see that it does.  Nothing will be done unless you want it to be.  The filing of petitions will eventually lead to the same outcome but, in my opinion, will not have the greatest impact.  By using what you have in place as your form of government watchdog, the Ethics Panel, that will instill confidence and rebuild the trust in the community that has been diminished recently by your Town Council form of governing body.

A petition is being circulated now but it's success will not bring the issues forth that you need to be made aware of.  By convening the Ethics Panel, all information will be made public as it should be and will not be swept under the rug.

José and Carlos

José and Carlos are beggars.

They beg in different areas of town.

Carlos begs for the same amount of time
as José, but collects only about $8.00 or $9.00 a day.

José brings home a suitcase full of ten-dollar
bills every day. He drives a Mercedes,
lives in a mortgage-free house, and has a lot of money to spend.

"Hey, amigo," Carlos says to José,

"I work just as long and hard as you do, so how come you bring home a suitcase full of ten dollar bills every day?

José says, "Look at your sign, what does it say?"

Carlos reads his sign:

"I have no work,a wife and six kids to support."

"What's wrong with that?"

Carlos asks him.

"No wonder you only get

$8.00 or $9.00
a day!" says José.

Carlos says,

"All right, what is on your sign?"

José shows him:

Town to reissue property tax bills

By Betty Adams badams@centralmaine.com
Staff Writer
LITCHFIELD — The town will send out 2,763 new property tax bills to replace those mailed about two weeks ago.
Selectmen authorized the new bills Tuesday after more than 130 people registered concerns that their bills had increased significantly even though property values and tax rates remained unchanged.
"We recognize that something was wrong, and we want very much to correct it," Selectwoman Rayna Leibowitz said.
Selectmen met Tuesday night in front of about 90 people to offer an explanation and authorize the recalculations. The special selectmen's meeting attracted a full house, and some people stood outside open doors to listen and participate in the proceedings.

How To Avoid Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs

Friends here in our community and one of their sons is an entomologist (insect expert), and has been telling them that there is an epidemic of bed bugs now occurring in America.  Recently I have heard on the news that several stores in NYC have had to close due to bed bug problems, as well as a complete mall in New Jersey.

He says that since much of our clothing, sheets, towels, etc. now comes from companies outside of America, (sad but true), even the most expensive stores sell foreign clothing from China, Indonesia, etc.  The bed bugs are coming in on the clothing as these countries do not consider them a problem.  He recommends that if you buy any new clothing, even underwear and socks, sheets, towels, etc. that you bring them into the house and put them in your clothes dryer for at least 20 minutes.  The heat will kill them and their eggs.

DO NOT PURCHASE CLOTHES AND HANG THEM IN THE CLOSET FIRST.

It does not matter what the price range is of the clothing, or if the outfit comes from the most expensive store known in the U.S.  They still get shipments from these countries and the bugs can come in a box of scarves or anything else for that matter.

That is the reason why so many stores, many of them clothing stores have had to shut down in NYC and other places.   All you need is to bring one item into the house that has bugs or eggs and you will go to hell and back trying to get rid of them.  He travels all over the country as an advisor to many of these stores, as prevention and after they have the problem.

Send this information on to those on your e-mail list so that this good prevention information gets around quickly.

*** News Flash*** Meeting Will Not Be Available Online

The October 5, 2010 Lisbon Town Council meeting will not be available on line through Great Falls TV.  There was a problem with the audio.

Funny how this always seems to happen when there is some important information for the residents.  Makes one wonder if it isn't being done deliberately.   Just another good reason to attend the meetings so that you know first hand what is going on and not relying on the "special to that 'Up River' Paper" for your information as that report is a canned report from the Lisbon Town Office.  AND ONLY what they want said gets printed.

And now you are all paying for another tax billing this year.   WOW,  You have some great leadership, NOT!!!

Girls Soccer

On Thursday 10/7, Lisbon Sugg middle school girls’ soccer celebrated their second victory in away game in a row, 2x1 against Monmouth. The greyhounds showed great hustle by guarding the victory until the last minute in a game played in a slippery field. Center back and captain Kailyn Hill kept Lisbon’s goal out of the line of fire by kicking several balls out of the defense, and Left Fullback Mikayla Yanez close the left lane for the Mustangs.

Middle fielders fought like warriors to steal the ball from the opponent, including Center midfielder Chandler Riordan and Left midfielder Abby Gamache. Offensive line was constant and effective, including Center forward Ashley Conrad, who scored in the first half her 7th goal in this season after receiving a perfect pass from Left midfielder Abby Gamache, and Right forward Loren Grant, who scored the winning goal in the second half.

Lisbon Sugg middle school girls’ soccer next game is Tuesday, 10/12 at 4:30 pm, a home game against Winthrop.
